Many of the big box stores in my area got rid of their seed inventory suddenly. I have no idea why but maybe to clear space for the fall inventory? One Target store I went to still had a number of seeds, but another Target store had none at all. I guess you just have to look around in your area. You may also want to consider ordering online. Many places will ship out in just a few days and you can get better variety.

Try WalMart for the Ferry-Morse Organic seeds. I've had incredibly good luck with them. If the big box stores, including Lowe's and HD are out, check with Big Lots or some other outlet type store.

Friday I went looking for Roma tomato seeds.....stopped at our local Ace hardware they had no seeds at all. Went to Kmart, none, went to Lowes, they had some seeds but no Roma seeds. Stopped at Walmart and they had no seeds at all... Luckily a neighbor had 2 different type of Roma seeds.

Thanks everyone. I bought seeds from Harris on line last fall...maybe I will try them again. They do have some organic seeds. It is frustrating to look at all the local stores and not find what I am looking for.

The best place to buy tomato seeds for Florida is Tomato Growers Supply.
They also have peppers.
Linda the owner is a wealth of information if you'd like advice on which kinds would be best for your garden.

I called her years ago when just starting to grow tomatoes and she actually told me to wait (it was May or June) and don't start seeds yet. That's an honest business person.

There could be problems buying seeds at Big Lots because the seed could be old. I like to save money too but my time and effort are worth getting the best seeds.

I also want to recommend Baker Creek and The Sample Seed Shop. There are tons of other wonderful online seed sellers I have used, but I just received seeds today in the mail from these two and I am very happy with both orders. Bakercreek specializes in heirloom veggie seeds and The Sample Seed Shop is a small operation that sells mini size quanities of seeds (which is all I ever really need). Both of them sent bonus seeds with my order too.

Seems I recall a Law passed awhile back, abt. stores not selling seeds during a month in the summer ? anybody remember this ? maybe the store can give you more information, but it has something to do with plant diseases and seeds going bad in the heat and humidity......sally

www.seedrack.com is a good site that I've ordered from a few times. They have a large selection of unusual varieties... I actually got my heliconia schiedeana seeds from them too!

I'm with you on the Ferry-Morse Organic seeds, I've had great luck with those. It really does seem like the big box stores are selling less and less seeds and edible plants every year. It seems like it ought to be a growth area for their business, with so many people trying to "go green", but the selection seems to be shrinking everywhere I look. Walmart throws away their whole garden section for half a year so they can put Christmas stuff out ridiculously early; and as for seedlings, what little is offered, EVERYBODY offers. Not much variety, just the same two or three things at every store you go to. Online seeds and grow-your-own is definitely the way to go.

Anyone think they stop selling seeds because they make more money on the seedlings?

FYI I heard it through the grapevine that Target is closing their garden centers. Its a shame, since the terrance conran line was a favorite of mine, and they had new varieties every season. Apart from that they have been paring down their roster of vendors, severely limiting the selection. If my garden center still carried useful plants outside the realm of ti plants, majesty palms and pothos they would have been doing better, i assure you.
I think that its a great time for independent nurseries and garden centers to get on the ball and start filling in the market!

That's a shame about Target. I always enjoyed their garden centers. They overcharged on the fountains and such, but it always had a nice theme that changed seasonally.

Found a fair amount of seeds at Lowes on Rt 19 in Spring Hill if anyone is interested - Big Boys, Early Girl, Sweet 100's, peppers onions, assorted lettuces, etc.. but zero at Home Depot across the street.

I live in Deland and I'd love to find a nursery or garden center that wasn't in a big box store. The few I've seen around my area either only sell ornamentals & trees, or they're not open to the public - you have to have some sort of landscaping license or something like that (don't know exactly, just know they won't sell to ME). Seeds are easy and relatively cheap to order online, and there's a great selection to be had - but sometimes I'm late, or just lazy, and I'd love to be able to buy some actual PLANTS somewhere. I know you can get some seedlings through the mail, but it seems kind of iffy and expensive. Do you guys know of a vegetable/herb commercial facility near Deland?
