First time planting from bulb/roots?

I was assured by my Godmother (gardening mentor lol) that if I planted some bulbs and roots that they would be okay, grow, and bloom before frost. Because it's Florida. Every single package they were in said to plant in spring and they'd bloom in the summer. I planted Freesia, Daylily, Canna and Dahlia. So you think they will be okay? I know it will likely take a month to even see anything.

Also, they say they are annual (besides the daylilies)... what are the chances, if I protect them from frost, that they will turn perennial? Is that even possible? Crossing fingers for the canna... hehe.

Frost? In 9a? What frost? Do we ever get frost anymore?
Thinking I'd be more concerned about the heat & humidity right now - it can be fatal to many plants this time of year...

Haha, I only moved back here two months ago, I haven't been here in 13 years. And yes, I worry a little about that too.

So, in your opinion, it could go either way? They either get happy or not?

And have you heard of annuals becoming perennials in this area? I'm not coastal, but I'm in western FL... nature coast.

Yes you do plant them on top of one another but you also put the bulbs that bloom later in the season towards the front of the bed otherwise the dying foliage of the earlier bulbs will ruin the display. Or you can make sure that all the bulbs you plant bloom at the same time - early with early and late with late. It should say on the description of the bulbs. Some online or catalogue sellers give that information for just that reason - so that you have things displaying at the same time. But, if you are going to mix bulbs, say early tulips with late tulips, be sure to plant the late in the front of the early otherwise you'll see that problem I mentioned. For example, I had a large bed against a rock wall, approx 20' long and 4' wide. Near the rocks itself, I planted the large King Alfred type daffs. In front of them I planted Poeticas Daffs, and in front of them I planted Hostas. First to show are the King Alfreds (end of April to about mid May), then the Poeticas (mid May to mid June) then the foliage of the Hostas eventually hides all the browning foliage. Unless someone is right on top of the rock garden, no one would ever see the dying foliage. Hope this helps.

The front garden gets mostly full sun and the soil is clay but has been amended with some top soil and mulch. We moved into our house late Feb. and my neighbors aren't really gardeners so I don't remember seeing any bulbs- nor have I really seen anyone else have flowers over the summer. I started a cottage garden out the front this year with perennials and annuals that I had winter sown, so I should have room to leave the bulbs in year round. I'd like early color and don't plan on cutting the flowers. I'd like the flowers to last as long as possible. I was considering crocus then early and late single tulips for continued color... not fussy about plant height. The house is a light grey so I'm looking for tons of color. I plan on covering the bulbs with wire mesh because we have squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies and ground hogs in the yard. Thanks for your help :)

dl99- thanks for reply. i actually couldnt take it and changed soil for G.vietnam and African G. do you have any of these plants under your care? if so any advice? i still have the chinese perfume plant in same soil. dont have any more soil. i have to get some asap. i will try and post pitures. my phone camera is not so lear. hopefulA.-LOL @ baby reptiles i now always check for bugs. especially after the first time i was viciously attaked by a spider one time. what i do with plants, when i first get them, is remove soil and drown entire plant in a bucket of waqrm water and alcohol. and spray with a solution of soap, alcohol water. i do this all in a rush. and then no bugs! i keep checking of course. How is the chinese plant? is it fragrant? i still have my chinese plant in its same pot and soil away from everything else. i need more soil and it has a few buds coming along. mine has one little tiny yellow ball open and no scent maybe its too small or something. also i sometimes see sticky clear stuff but i dont see any bugs. when its time to change his soil he will be thoroughly cleaned. for now i will spray him randomly with soap and water nd alcohol. how do you care for your chinese plant? the african gardenia sure does sell fast on accents. mine needed roots pruning so its recovering from that,so no sign of new grow but no signs of death either. thats good no? the G. vietnam is doing well also. before i changed soil and put it in a bigger pot the leaves yellowed slightly. it is showing signs of new growth and im excited about it.

Usually when the yellowing begins at the oldest leaves first and works its way up progressively through the older leaves ... and the yellowing is uniform yellowing with no black spots or ringed blotches on the leaves ... that is a sure sign of the plant robbing nitrogen from the older leaves and transferring it to the new growth ... meaning your plants are asking for a nitrogen boost. However, I don't see the "yellowing" ... all I see in your pictures is some off-color, dull khaki colored leaves like in that third picture, then it seems the coloration goes to dry, dead, dark tan or light brown. Also, look at that first picture and the last picture where the discoloration seems to have skipped past some of the older leaves and is well progressed on a some of the foliage in mid-plant. That doesn't seem indicative of typical nitrogen deficiency which would seem to be the first deficiency that would appear if indeed you are flushing or leaching out nutrients by over-watering as N is more unstable and "leachable" than P or K ... and you say you're fertilizing regularly with Miracle Grow. So, I don't really suspect it's lack of application. I'm thinking possibly disease of some sort. I'm not familiar with Miracle Grow plant growing mixes, but I did have trouble this summer with a knock-off brand of the same type stuff from Scotts (which I think is the same company now) where it was just to moisture rententive for the tomato plants I happened to use it for. I thought I had lucked into a good deal when I got a couple of busted bags for half price ... but the plants in that mix withered up similarly to yours, but not exactly the same color or pattern of disorder. But the mix always seemed saturated. My other potted tomatoes never had a problem all summer even though I watered them nearly daily and at the risk of overwatering ... but they were in a very porous homemade mix and never showed the least sign of what we're talking about here. So, I'm really no help with regard to the possibility of over watering. Personally, since your plants are showing that funky off-color on the leaves AND some of the stem tissue ... and since there seems to be some leaf distortion going on there too ... like a little roll while there's still some greenish color left ... you may want to take some examples of leaves to your county extension horticulturalist. If you do, take some healthy leaves, some that are just starting to show the disorder, and other foliage AND some of those discolored stems in various stages of dying and death so she or he has enough evidence to make a determination whether you're dealing with a fungal or bacterialogical agent or some other thing we all may be missing here.

Sadly, Jacksonville's zone 9A regularly gets both frosts and hard freezes every winter. This past winter, we had a low of 23.5 F and a dew point of 8.9 F.

I would be SO thrilled if we didn't get those frosts and freezes.

Yikes. Came from North Carolina. Sounds like home to me! :/

I'm right outside of Inverness, *almost* in 9b, so I'm gonna expect the same.

the freesia and dahlias might not do so well either way in FL, but the daylilies and cannas should, they may very well freeze back if they get frosted but you will see them again in the spring.

Quite a mixture of plants !!lol IME . Are you planning a perrenial garden or just experimenting?? Many of the plants you mention require cool cold rest periods while others can be evergreen depending on ma nature .
Freesia for example does best with a cool growing season
as does Dahlia Canna and daylily can be seasonal or evergreen depending on the variety.
of course you can manipulate the growing season depending on what you want. since you have a cool season there are many types that will thrive while many tropicals will not Every area has advantages as well as bad points What are your neighbors growing and how?? Take advantage of your cool season if wanting a perrenial ornamental garden, after all most ornamental plants fall into that group . i tend to use tropical "hoseplant " types as they don't require cool cold rest periods and thrive in the tropical summers .
Since you've already made your selections plant them and report back how it went?? gary

My dahlias did well last year, but they need constant dead heading. Daylilies do fine here and so do Cannas. Both are perennial here.

Gary, yes, I know! I am new to gardening, so I'm just experimenting as much as I can! My Godmom mentioned she had some Daylily bulbs and I was like... are you holding out on me?! lol So she brought some bags out with different plants and I selected the ones that I liked...

Everything has been in the ground for about two weeks, so we shall see how everything goes. It's a large area with lots of beds so we're going to make it part veggie garden, part perennial garden... I want to put as many natives in as I can next season. The daylilies are King Alfred, so I'm very excited for them. I also have a yellow hibiscus, some relocated angelonia that are in major transplant shock, a bed of dark pink periwinkles and two plumeria babies out there. Also propagating some plumbago from cuttings and growing some teddy bear sunflowers from seeds. With the freesia, dahlias, and cannas, it's quite a mix!

I just wish we'd get some rain. :(

Everything else I get to be planted in the garden next season will either be relocated from elsewhere in the yard or bought from a native nursery.
