Hey all

We all had a blast with the Hosta Alphabet - there are some fantastic plants and great photos for all to see. How about if we post photos of favorite sports or seedlings that you have decided to keep. I have a few that I am very excited about....

Alexa, you have some very pretty ones there, I really love the LMEY sport!!!

Phil, it is similar to Abba Dabba Do- except much lighter - I got good contrast on the pic above , contrast is much more subtle - so we'll see in a few years how much different. I have Abba Dabba Do about 20 feet away and it is much darker. I saw a similar plant in the Dean Garden from the tours - so I'm guessing not an unusual sport. Here's Abba Dabba Do and the above sport both taken July 4th for comparison- I'm gonna label it "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" from song Monkey and the Chimp. Paul

My Jack of Diamonds is reverting: My mom's Francee threw out a sport, and she let me have it. All the leaves in this eye are this way. I am told it will not stay this way for long.

Ethan and Jay, here is my much appreciated Tamarind tree. It is where to go, if you are looking for "chicks" -- the fat-bottomed "chickEN" types(G). I love the tiny, delicate-looking foliage that starts out pink. I like the way the tree closes its leaves tightly when stressed by wind, to protect itself. I love the gnarly, fissured bark and orchid-like blooms. The yummy pods of sweet/tart fruit are the icing on the cake! My tree stood up fine to hurricanes, and the recent 34 degree night. There are no negatives about this plant that I know of. It is a keeper! Lisa

Kelley - I think if my little valencia every produces I will try to grow from seed just to see what happens. Every January I setup my seeds, heat mat and grow lights in our kitchen to start all my plants for spring. I will add that to it if it every happens! MyerMike - thanks! I have been on here posting the pics since about 2016 when my poor lisbon and bearrs lime were sunburnt when i first put them in the ground. It was my first time planting a tree(we had just got the house) and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with them and I just didn't want them to die. I'd killed plenty of trees previously on a patio that was in full sun. Even my local nursery gave me BAD advice. I couldn't believe it. The good folks here have helped me get my trees thriving. I've since added a few more trees(and I want to buy more every year). I'm so thankful for this forum and all of you! Helped me help my trees. Nules - those lemons and limes are so beautiful! What do you do with them all? I hope to one day have a lime crop like that!!

Oh wow Rachel!

That Canary Diamond is STUNNING! I absolutely love Niagara Falls and your yellow seems to have carried forth the gorgeous form.

I really like the Streaked Cinnamon Sticks too - down here in balmy zone 7 we can usually get the late ones to set pods - hint hint hint LOLOLOL! But seriously, what a lucky find - it is really nice.

I probably should have mentioned that the guys I posted above are all from last year. That was my first time trying seeds and I had a ball doing it! I have some going now too, but they are too small to see much yet. But don't worry, I will be posting lots of photos as soon as they are big enough!

Hi Rachel! I've been meaning to ask you if you are going to be able to bring any of your "babies" from Canada to your new home. I remember prior to your move last year (Hallson's forum) you were trying to figure out if you could or not. I see on your current hosta list that many are listed as being in Canada...does this mean you still have a way to get them?

Alexa, you have some great babies there, it's amazing how much they change as young'ins. Thank you about Canary Diamond, I'm anxious to see it in June when I go back to Canada to visit. Nice hint btw....hahaha

Andrea, yes I did bring some with me, but none of the real 'special' ones. I hope to get them sent over in June sometime if all goes well with inspection. The ones left behind in Canada are in good hands so at least I can still keep watch on the special ones I crossed and see how they do during my visits.

I love the seedlings! Thanks for the encouragement.

Alexa I'm a sucker for the cupped hostas. That one of yours is downright cute!! And I love that streaked LMEY. Very showy!

Rachel, your seedlings are terrific, very inspiring. On average, how old are the maturer ones in the pics? For example I love 'Dancing Gecko', how old is that seedling? I just planted my first seeds last Friday, and have no clue what to expect. I guess it'll be a few years before I see anything that size.

Donna, The pics of Dancing Gecko are yr 3. The pic where it is bareroot was after cutting it in half and sending it to a special someone in a secret trade. It was a nice decent size then. That one in particular is a good grower. As for the other seedlings, I have many that are 7 yrs old or less and like any other hosta some grow gang busters and others take their sweet kool-aid time to do anything. But overall I find seedlings to multiply quick and such a joy to see what they will become.
If you have patience Donna, you'll have a ton of fun with those babies. Good luck with them and enjoy!

Thanks Rachel. I thought I had a lot of patience, but waiting for them to germinate is killing me. If they don't I'll just have to try again at some point.

I started collecting hostas in July 2005, picked up a lot of tc's and small divisions, I've had a lot of patience there, they don't seem to be following the sleep, creep and leap creedo spoken here. I see that many of them poking out now are still only 1 eye (this should be the leap year). I hope my plants will be half as beautiful as yours in a few years time. Donna ;o)

Here's a few pics of my sports, none of them are ultra-exciting, but it's what I have. Sadly, I never got around to starting any seeds this year, so no seedling pics (and to think I even bought streaky pod-parent seeds off ebay and never started them, shame on me.)

Gold Standard possibly sporting or just acting funny? (the hosta in the 6-7 o'clock position)

Clifford's Comet with an eye sporting off the left side. Note the lack of a green margin. I chose not to separate the sporting eye from the mother plant, hopefully it comes back this year with more roots/eyes and I might separate it.

I found a Francee that "could" be sporting. Note the leaf in the 9 o'clock position.

Last year I found a pot of Risky Business, which contained normal RB, solid green RB, and streaked RB. First pic is before I separated them.

And here is the streaked portion once I separated them (sadly, it never set any seed pods, I'm guessing it's not very fertile?)
