Still have some blooming...

Well, this next one isn't still blooming, but I decided to post it, since so many of you have it, and I'm jealous of your photos. Startle has NEVER looked as great as it did in the catalog of the vender I purchased it from (can't even remember who that was!) The pics that all of you have posted are red w/ white or cream edges. Mine is always pink w/yellowish edges. It looks like this every single year, and I'm beginning to think it was either mislabeled, or a substitute. What do you think?

New for me this year, and after about three or four blooms, it finally doubled nicely:

I didn't like this one the first year, because it was so difficult to photograph, and it only sent up a few blooms. But this year it has gotten taller, has lots more buds, and I guess I'm figuring out how to capture it better:

Trying to make up my mind if I like this one or not. It's planted right next to Castle Pinkney, which I like much better, so they clash a bit. Oh well, maybe it will grow on me:

And finally......I had ordered Sings the Blues from one vender, and got a bonus of the same plant from another vender. The first one made me wonder why I ever purchased the plant:

The second photo was from the other one, planted in a little more sun, and in an area with less tree-root-competition. What a difference location makes!:

Julie- You just keep on posting, I love your pictures.

Your STARTLE sure does not look like STARTLE to me. INDY LONG LEGS looks fantastic, my favorite of this batch. My what a difference between the two flowers of SINGS THE BLUES. I guess location does make a big difference.

I love Sings the Blues in both locations... I got it this year, but it has not bloomed. Can't wait. Funny how location can make such a difference.

From what I have seen of Startle, I'd say you have something else...

Night Embers sure has a pretty shape! I think your photo is great.

Marcia, mine does not get a chance to spread. It is in the middle of the garden and DH loves to till. Sometimes I wish it would spread a bit. I think I might dig some of it up and plant it out in the field away from the reaches of the tiller. When I was growing up there was a big patch on the side of the road. I just loved it. I suggest not cutting them earlier, George. Here in Texas, our flower buds can develop in August; I learned that the hard way when I gave a friend of mine permission to cut my hydrangea blooms in May and she got them in mid August. Wiped me out. Next May, I had almost no flowers. So for people in the lower southern states, I recommend no pruning/cutting starting in August. However, I noticed that you live in Texas too so, what flower buds you failed to prune/cut, the weather may have killed. I live near D/FW Airport and, last fall, we had a warm spell followed by a several days of freezing temperatures and ice. As a result, I got only 3 blooms this year with growth coming back mostly from the crown. First time that has happened. My Nikko Blue had two blooms and an unnamed hydrangea had one. Im in SI, not as urban as most see NYC, but still not as much room as I would like to have! Thanks Bradleyo! Yeah, it gets to be a lot indoors, but luckily my family doesnt mind too much (well they mind, but they know how much it means to me!) and my dog is pretty good with not eating any plants (but she does love to get into the garbage). I will definitely post some indoor pics when the time comes! Thanks Island! Yup! I live in NYC! Some plants are in pots, some are in the ground. A few, like the palms in the ground, survive the winter with some protection (I just put some christmas lights and a garbage bin over them). Others like the elephant ears and bananas are easy to bring in and store for the winter. Some of the plants cant be dug up (like the coconut palm and tropical palms) so those are in pots and get put by a sunny window! The plumerias go dormant so they are pretty easy to keep indoors, but the large one might not fit indoors this year! The Passionvine, cannas, and ginger are hardy. The purple plants under the Elephant ears are called Purple Heart. They will be evergreen in your climate which is a huge plus! They look good up until temperatures get into the upper 20s, then they die back. They are hardy to zone 8 and up, but they come back for me since they are in a good microclimate. They are a little invasive, but easy to control and I think they are worth growing for sure! Thanks for looking everyone! -Alex

Beautiful pics Masha! Isn't it crazy? I had some gorgeous blooms I started to take pics of a couple days ago, but my dang camera battery went dead. (one of the ones I didn't get was BROCELIANDE!) The next day it started dumping torrential rains for two days. Waaah!! I meant to get out and try to get pics today, but got sidetracked. Maybe they might still be ok tomorrow. I can't believe how many roses are still trying to bloom even after the freeze we got last week. I love it!! Your PAT AUSTIN is gorgeous! And I love the camellia. I oughta check on mine and see if any are trying to bloom yet. They usually bloom closer to Jan tho.

Julie, I love Indy Long Legs! I have been converted this year to spiders and UF's. Both pictures of Sings the Blues are great, but I agree with you that the color combinations on the second picture are quite striking.

wow, JUlie,I love your pictures.SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSIC is sooo pretty,and NIGHT EMBERS is gorgeous.Every time I see a picture os Admirals Braid,I tell myself,I want this one.maybe one day,,, SINGS THE BLUES is very pretty, too. Maybe STARTLE needs moved too.It don't look nothing like all the pictures I have seen of it..Keep the pictures coming.I am loving them.

Nice Julie....I'm especially amazed at the difference in your two photos of STB. I've been less than pleased with mines performance so I think maybe I'll move it and see if it does any better.

Nice pics. I don't have any of them,but added Indy Longlegs to my list. I'd say your Startle is mislabeled.Yours looks waaayyy too pretty!LOL!

Indy Long Legs is a fabulous plant, fertile too, if you're into dapping pollen. It took me a long time to appreciate UFOs and spiders. They don't always look the best in some photos, but in a garden setting, it's neat to watch their petals flowing with the breeze. I am really hooked on them now.

It took me a long time to add Siloam Dbl Classic to my collection, mainly because I'm not too much of a fan of the peony type doubles. But that particular color of pink drew my attention, plus the fact I hear it's a long bloomer once established.

Love that Indy Long Legs! I have a couple from the Indy series and they are very nice daylilies. Your Startle must be mislabeled.
