Oh, so Eureka isn't the "all inclusive" guide??? For some reason, I thought it had all 60,000 CVs in it. Hmm.

Funny that she didn't seem to know that tidbit about it only listing the major players...Maybe I expect too much from DL growers (who are supposed to know more than I do, and can find out here!!!)

Maybe Tinker's should add a pricing guide to their services...I use them all the time.

While the Eureka can be a useful tool it is not the end all and be all of daylily buying. It can be helpful in locating some cultivars but so is an internet search engine. I think it was used more in the past as a marketing tool for folks (myself included) that didn't have the internet saavy or the resources to have an individual website.

I can't say that the Eureka lists only major players. Most of the more well known hybridizers do not advertise in the Eureka. It mostly caters to secondary sellers that hybridize on the side.

As far as Tinker's adding a price guide, again, that would probably be a paid service and by no means inclusive.

I too believe it was Eureka. However, the 2007 guide will probably not have 2007 registered daylilies in it - most don't make the publication date. I use Eureka a lot - it's a handy reference to have. Too bad she didn't share it with you - I discovered it at a local dl garden and they were glad to give me the name and address so I could order it.

Having purchased a large number of daylilies this summer from different nurseries, I have learned a lot about them, Most of them were either good or exceptional, and one or two were downright sorry, in my opnion.

First, I'd recommend that you do an internet search for each separate cultivar you wish to purchase. In the Google search, type in "daylily + (name of cultivar). You will then find a number of daylily farms that are offering the specific cultivar for sale, and the price. The prices will vary considerably, but you can get a good idea of what it is worth. I would definitely do this before making a purchase at auction! It is very time-consuming, but worth it in the long run. Keep in mind, though, that the cheapest or the most expensive prices do not necessarily reflect on the quality of plants that you will receive.

Second, before ever placing an order, I'd research a nursery carefully by reading the reviews by their customers at Dave's Garden Watchdog,

Eureka's fine, but limited. Google is more informative as well as several internet sites. Try this one. There is another one, but I can't find it right now. Nothing is all inclusive. You have to do your homework.

I just said major sellers, maybe should have said resellers. Another site I use quite a bit is Charlotte's Daylily Diary. Lists links to most of major hybridizers. Use it quite a bit when I want to check a new intro, or one I haven't heard of. Two I am quite fond of are Bill Maryott and the Holley's (Goldcoast in Eureka and auction). Both quite good quality and generosity of plants and bonuses.

I usually do the "Daylily (cultivar)" search at Google, but rarely when buying. I like to make large purchases rather than several small ones simply to save on shipping costs, so if I find a retailer I like, I'll place the whole order there. I've found that most retailers I've looked at have both higher & lower prices than any other place, so thinking that it mostly evens out in the wash...but some places I've found seem to be over-priced across the board, so I'll usually pass on them.
