front flower bed progress report

A little while ago I posted pictures of my new front sidewalk and promised more pictures as I made progress on the flower bed next to it. Well, here are the pictures!

I've decided to add a pond to the bed up near the front porch. Mom gave me the pond and pump that she had sitting under a tarp out back. There's still a lot that needs to be done but the bed's really starting to take shape.

That beautiful blue ceramic bird bath was a birthday gift from a couple of my friends and another friend gave me two of the short solar lights that line the sidewalk. I'll post more pics as I make more progress.

Kara-That is looking so nice. I know you are proud of what you have done. The path really sets off the landscaping that you've done. Cool, a pond!

Ha, ha, ha, ha: Yes, Nandina domestica ('Sacred Bamboo' in some countries). Why do I laugh? Forget it, it's almost a long story and not worth the telling. I garden in zone 10 and Nandina domestica, at least healhy specimens, slowly advance by root progression, but no-where near as vigorous as botanical bamboo (Bambusa) which, if you have enough patience, you can actually see growing before your eyes in the growing season - I know, I've watched it, and, if it (Nandina) becomes a problem, it aint too difficult to dig up. Thanks all!! I put the shed on Kijiji, for free. I posted it just before I went to bed, and by lunch the next day I had about 40 hits. The winner said he'd done it before, had a trailer ready to go, and would clean up. He showed up with 4 strong lads, and they took it apart. It was quite a morning. They were very hard workers and quite the comedians. I had to move about 3 pickup loads of wood out of it first, and I look like I've been beaten up!! MeMo, I wanted you to see the Butterfly Bush!! It had actually over-wintered in Ottawa. Didn't you post about having a hedge of butterfly bushes(maybe I'm crazy??) My neighbour is a butcher/sausage-maker, and has a 'deer-garden' in behind those trees you see past where the shed used to be....I hope I do see some, preferrably not in my garden(and he assures me he doesn't hunt much anymore...) Trailrunner, it's fun having more space, and I actually wanted more. I am now very daunted by the amount of raking I need to do...lol!! What would I have done with more space!! On the upside, as you can see, there are exisiting gardens which have been quite neglected, I think. There are, however, interesting plants coming up, so watch for the "Identify This Plant" posts!! Nell, Nell and Cameron, I LOVE red flowers, but I mix my reds in with other BRIGHT Tropical colours, as well as pastels and neutrals. Here are some of my REDS: Lady in Red (Salvia), Cannas, Zinnias, Nasturtiums, Dianthus, Roses, Sweet William, Cyprus Vine, Asiatic Lilies, Crocosmias (Lucifer), Maltese Cross, Petunias, Texas Red Star (Hibiscus), Salvia greggii and so many more. I love flowers with bright colorful, tropical colors, like Caribbean blues, oranges, REDS, greens, purples, and yellows. I love beautiful Esperanza. Some little dear Texas gal on this forum (wink, wink) sent me some seeds - lots of seeds. I had been a bit fearful to grow them thinking they were like Trumpet vine, but more research revealed to me that it is in fact a bush-type plant and not an invasive vine like Trumpet vine. Yeah! Here in my zone probably need to be grown as an annual or I will need to grow it in a big clay pot and bring it inside this fall. Is is too late to start some plants - two for me and some to share? Now, I have to go out and put my grass trimmer to work! With all the rain we have been having on a weekly basis, my yard looks like a "jungle". Last weekend we had to get the family cemetery mowed and trimmed for Decoration Day (Memorial Day). It took all day. Zooks! So our yard has just gotten WILD & snakey looking. Dug out some more "progress" pics. The angle is not exactly same, but the purple astible is the same reference point in all The first is in 2004, 2nd year for this area. Here is the same area in 2006 And now in 2008. This area gets full sun from early morning until early afternoon. Some do better than others. I took the hanging plants down to open the shot. The cattle panel was supposed to be trellis for sweat peas that were going to shade the hostas and scent the backyard before the lilies started blooming. I found out I don't know how to grow sweat peas!!! lol Maybe clematis for next year. This shot almost matches the one from '06. Please note the mutant GE. I call it a mutant because it lived!! lol And if your screen looks like mine, 2006 and 2008 pics side by side.

Wow Kara, it's come so far! When I was there the grass was so thirsty, too. I think the pond'll look wonderful. Good job!

What a charming entry. If I was to come to your house I might never make it to the front door. Love that crinum when do they bloom anyway. Love those totems and gallardia. I can't wait to see what you do with the pond.

You've been busy and it shows. Your entry is very nice. Love that pathway and look forward to seeing the pond in ground. Do keep posting pictures. It is neat to see how gardens progress. You are doing a great job.

Thank you for all the wonderful comments! I got some more work done on the bed this weekend and should be able to start digging the hole for the pond soon. I'll keep posting updates.

Kate, all of the clear glass balls are solar lights that change color from red to blue to yellow with various combinations of those colors between shifts. You can buy the short ones at Walmart.

Vaodiva, I keep meaning to e-mail you so that we can get together. I realized after you left my house that I never gave you any of the false rosemary. And I still want to see your garden too.

Babcoleus, mom has the same variety of crinum and her's blooms off and on all year.

Cindeea, my friends bought the birdbath at Lowes.

Felix, once I get the pond in I'll take you up on that offer. Some miniture water lilies would be wonderful!

Gorgeous! Please tell me more about that wonderful little "statue" or whatever it is next to the Bee Balm in the third picture. Did you make it?
