I discovered swiss chard when I lived in San Diego, an asian neighbor dug up some of her plants and gave me 2 big plants. I LOVED them. They had big huge leafs, I would steam and then briefly saute in fresh garlic and butter..YUMMMY...Now for some reason, the chard I have planted here in GA is not as good to me, the flavor is very different. I got a bunch of seeds in a seed exchange, so maybe the varieties were just not the same. I'm going to try to plant more of the big green ones, the shorter more colorful (more red stemmed ones) just dont have the same buttery taste to me. I also got seeds from a neighbor last year of what i was told was a climbing okra...turns out that it is something else which I cannot recall the name, I know that they are used when left to dry out to make luffa's?, and since they were planted so late last year, I did not get a chance to try them out..but they were really big long pods. I'll try them again this year and see what happens. I LOVE Okra, planted Emerald for the first time this year, last year and the few years before, I planted Clemson Spineless, hope I am not dissapointed with Emerald, as I have NO Clemson's planted at all this year. My first year here, I planted 6 yes SIX okra plants, I'll never forget, I was admiring the very lush garden of a neighbor of my MIL's , he's an older gentleman and I was so proud that I too had planted OKRA, he asked me how many plants I had, and I told him SIX...and he chuckled outloud and says "well you might be able to get a mess from them" I learned quickly, there was NO MESS of any kind with just six plants...the next year I planted 20 and even then never had enough to put any up...and it took a week to get a "mess" to cook up. this year I have planted 3 rows (15 feet each), I'm hoping this is enough :) I also have for the first time successfully grown garlic, I bought a mixed bag (she sent me a few of each of several different varieties) from a lady who sells on the farmers bulletin from Atlanta, I think I planted like 6 or 7 different types. they are all over my garden..cant wait another surprise that I just love are the multiplying onions. got free bulbs from someone on freecycle, and now I have more of them than I know what to do with.. last year I also for the first time successfully grew PEANUTS!! that was WAY COOL...harvested and put up a dozen gallon bag full of them. of course here in the south we boil them in salty water, yummy!! I have volunteers all over my garden!! I have enjoyed mustard greens and love having parsley in my garden...I found some growing in the cracks in my lower patio, I had let some in the flower beds go to seed, and I dont have the heart to pull them up!! And finally sweet potatoes! no hassle great reward!!

Chelcass...I LOVE the pic of the hens & roosters behind the chicken wire fence & Campbell sitting there in front ...just shrugging his shoulders & wondering what all the fuss is about! LOL! Your chick babies are cute, too! Looks like Campbell had a GREAT time in TN! Just "down home" on the farm! I also LOVe the pic where he is admiring your old windows w/mosaicing! Best surprise in the garden this summer?

My biggest surprise was how really well all the new roses are doing this summer and, for most, the extent of blooming during record-setting heat. That's true for all our roses that are planted in the sunniest bed. I said in some post or other that Duchesse de Brabant had slowed down some, but that only lasted about 10 days between blooms during the early summer when we had a tiny bit of drought and didn't water quite enough. Since then we've had good rain and watered well when we didn't... and the roses really do like all the water (with good drainage). Another surprise is the extent of blooming for roses that mostly went into the ground this spring and summer. I know theoretically that they'd do better if we didn't let them bloom, but they are doing so well with all the sun, heat, and water this summer that it's hard to see how they could be doing any better. Most are completely blackspot-free, and the other two are at least 90%. And that's with growing in a spot that lacks a noticeable amount of direct morning sunlight (but still is the sunniest spot we have). One spot has slightly less light than the overall location for all those roses (a nearby camellia is quite tall)... and when my husband retrieved a Kordes' Lion's Fairy Tale from the pot ghetto it was accidentally planted there instead of the planned polyantha that I'd expect to have more shade tolerance. So I started making plans to move the rose as soon as I realized the error... but it turns out that Lion's Fairy Tale has some shade tolerance too! It has bloomed and grown well, this little one-gallon rose that went into the ground around the first week of June. It's completely blackspot & mildew-free too. Besides watering and plentiful rainfall as the main ingredient in success with roses' blooming and growing in the heat of the summer, I think another secret for success in hot summers is in the choice of varieties; the varieties planted in this bed all clearly like the heat of the Southern climate. A little more of what they already like apparently makes them even happier! Note: I might have guessed that Lion's Fairy Tale wouldn't want so much heat but it's doing wonderfully well. So is the bourbon Maggie (wow, what a beautiful bloomer!!!). The rest are mostly teas with a couple of polyanthas, a china and a noisette thrown in. I was hoping for a good summer season, but the season has been so good it has surpassed what I had been realistically hoping for. Great surprise, great surprise... :) Best wishes, Mary

What great stories. I have two to share. Both star our Lasa mix, Magic, that we lost at 16 years old 4 years ago. She was our spoiled rotten baby. When we had her spayed, I paid extra for the anesthetic that wears off quickly so I could bring her home. When I picked her up, they brought her out on the leash and she was walking and acting fine. As soon as she saw me, she slowed down to an almost crawl and hung her head and tail. I took her home and put her on the sofa. All weekend, she mostly stayed there as I hand fed her and brought her water to her. She was so pitiful. On Monday I went back to work. DH was on vacation and stayed home with her. After I was home from work for a while, DH started laughing like crazy. Magic was back on the sofa, not able to do anything and whining and looking at me so sadly each time I tried to leave her. I asked DH what was so funny and he said "Boy does she know how to play you! She has been running up and down the stairs all day, playing with her toys, eating normally, barking and jumping around. As soon as your car pulled in, she jumped up on the sofa to be babied!" What a little stinker she was!! Next when we were in an apartment waiting for the new house to be finished we told the managers that if the maintenance man needed in the apartment to let us know. Magic was not very friendly to anyone that tried to come into our home unless we said it was ok. Then they had to pet her or she would bug them to death. Anyway, one day when I was walking her the maintenance man came up and started talking to her. He said she was such a sweetheart, that every time he had to enter the apartment she followed him around and watched everything he did. Said she never made a sound, would just wag her tail and wait to be loved. What a great watch dog we THOUGHT we had!!

There is a gal on the Kitchen Table forum that's fostering one too. His name is Vernon. She rehabs possums too.

They are so cute. Too bad they grow up to be pain in the butts.

Feeding is done with a 1cc syringe and esbilac (puppy milk replacement formula). They feed every two hours in the day and about every four hours at night. Those three a.m. feedings are hard on the human sleep pattern. Reminds me of having a baby again. Oh for the days! Thanks for the link msmarion I will check out vernon. My little male has not been named yet. I found it in the middle of the road all covered with dirt after that big wind and rain storm last Thursday.

Maybe the gardenweb forum would like to think of an appropriate moniker.

As in the Dali Llama? Interesting. Storm or windy came to mind. Storm would be real masculine, except I keep thinking of the X-men character Storm and she is a girl. The last set of squirrels I had to raise were Chip and Dale, before that there was Alvin, Theodore, and Skippy. Somewhere along the way there was a Twiggy, (not the water skiing squirrel) and a few others. I was so afraid he would not make it through the weekend I didn't want to name him too quickly. I visited Vernon's post and added a hello from Florida grey squirrel with no name. What a hoot. You should check out my squirrels post on Vernon's thread.

I named Sanka after Sanka in the movie Cool Runnings. You know the Jamaican Bobsled team?
We would gget up and each morning the kids would say Sanka,,,Ya dead mon?

Found a baby flying squirrel a few years ago. Named him Rocky. Really enjoyed him till we moved.......couldn't take him where we were going. Gave him away.......still miss having him around.

O.K. though Nekkid gives me a hoot, I don't think I want to explain his name when he does start growing his hair. I think its a toss up between Storm and Rocky. But than again Rhett or Butler have the correct southern charm about them. I will post a new picture and thread and see if we can have a final vote.

We raised 2 babies back in the 80's
when the neighbor cut his tree down.
They had hair and thier eyes were opened,
E-B (Extra body running around the house)
lived in and outside for 3 years until we sold our house.
(Sister) Sledge, his sister, didn't come home one day.
They were a lot of fun.
E-B would go in my uniform pockets
to see what I brought him home from work...........cheryl
