Oh yes, absolutely, I have roses grouped all over the property. One of the pleasures for me is planning the combinations of colors, blooms, and shapes the cultivars will attain when they're mature. Many are placed to merge as freestanding hedges bordering beds, or to grow up trees together, such as Reve d'Or and The Bishop. I've also paired roses on arbors and tripods: Climbing Maman Cochet with Summer Wine, Viking Queen with Honorine de Brabant, Harlekin + Parade + Mme. Gregoire Staechelin +Aloha, etc. Hybrid musks are grouped in partially shaded areas, such Darlow's Enigma + Marjorie Fair + Nur Majal next to a patio so we can enjoy the fragrance. So go for it.

Sharon, thanks LOL It's in direct proportion to how much time, effort, and money it takes. It can range from just windy, to 25 with gusts to 40, overcast, downpour, hurricane. If it's really important, and really expensive, the earth opens up and just swallows me! LOL Got the Rutgers and Lemon Boys divided and planted today. Gave the others a boost with liquid fertilizer. Then ran out of potting soil. dangit Got to make another dirt run before I can pot any more up.

Over the course of the summer I have dug a couple to check. The last one was about a week ago and it was about a quarter in diameter. This set were the surviving cloves from a set of hardneck bulbs that had mostly dried out in warm storage. They had not been subject to any cooling period since they were dug in August of 2014, and all sprouted quickly when planted in June of 2015. Not one of them sent up a scape either this year, but all stand up to about 12" to 15" tall with almost no drying leaves nor has that situation changed at all for a long time. They haven't been watered either after they showed good initial growth. The real question in my mind was whether I could get large single rounds out of the small cloves. I think I can at this point but I do not know if I can get them to cure. I may have to use them green. The second question is whether they will winter from an early summer planting, which I think is likely, and then hopefully produce an increased size bulb next summer. edit: garlic almost certainly needs a rest period before it can sprout, but I do not think it needs cooling for that. What it needs cooling for is to start the blooming scape (sorta sounds like tulips doesn't it - same sort of thing IMO). I do not store my garlic cold, but rather at room temperature in a corner of the kitchen. The variety in the summer bed sends up scapes real easily when fall planted and wintered over in the ground. Even bulbils often do. But this summer bed never showed a single bolt. I intend to do this again perhaps on a larger scale depending on what this set of two dozen cloves ends up producing. So far whatever they end up doing they are all behaving very much alike, really uniform to this point.

Hi Kevin, Some of us heard seen/heard of these NASA studies. I just quickly rescanned it & saw comment about plant root-soil area. I took that to mean the soil may assist in this as well. I agree w/ most who think the foliage has a lot to do w/ the air purifying. I note the report is dated 1989. So we've certainly learned oodles more in the intervening 25 yrs+. as to how these things work. Am certain it's in the power of the leaves, at least in both, not just the roots. I think your plants look great, all I'd do is amend their mix w/ more perlite/pumice (like 50/50 w/ the soil). Forgive my being so blunt, but you're being sold a lot of marketing. If you're intent on growing them Hydro, all you need is media (I had Leca stones) & netted pots, that all (pls. search 'Netted Pots' as I have no pix of the empty pots). It's originally posted from its leaf start at the Sansevieria Forum nearby, but here's some recent pix. It's probably 6 yrs. old now. Here's a better look at the Leca stones (porous fired clay balls). The roots grow down into the balls at the bottom of which is the water, just a couple of inches. Here's its lovely roots. I shared these pix earlier in the year when I thought I'd have to move & was considering cutting this in 2. Haven't had to move thank G_d , but the plant can't grow sideways so now it's growing upwards. Here's a shot of where I might have separated it. I have to order some larger netted pots. I hadn't realized how top heavy this would get. Your Question abt roots or rhizome, you may find either or both as Tiffany's plants. Here's a plant that recently came my way, has both, rhizome & roots. Wow Tiff great pix!!! I remember the pix of roots all twisty every which way from the pot. I don't recall seeing the pic of the straight-line growth (from the yard I assume). Fascinating comparison, TFS w/ us!
