What Happens When Garlic Planted Early (September)?

Some of the folks planted garlic early, like mid September, for various reasons. So what will happen to the plants? I see most of them have sprouted.

Very likely the plants can grow to 6" to 10" tall, then they can be harvested as garlic greens, just like green onion. If they are hardneck, I do not think they will have time to send out the scapes. When winter comes, the top will be frozen to the ground.

But will the plants still have energy to grow out of the ground in spring? Or they are done and exhausted in winter?
