newbie..in big trouble

Hi all. This is my first posting. Forgive me for saying, I don't know whether to thank you or swear at the whole lot of you. This past spring, I was looking for something to add to my perennial bed, I researched for flowers with a big bang and a long bloom time. Everything I read, recommended day lilies.

A flower that only blooms for one day? I thought I hated Day lilies, those short yellow things that I see landscaped at every fast food joint, and every local mall and business(I'm not a big fan of yellow). I did a Google search, and found this forum. Then, I placed my first order at Marietta's. I bought 6 Siloam double Classics. 2 weeks Later, I placed my second Larger order at Marietta's buying

3 each of Autumn Wood, Bridgeton Bandwagon, Elizabeth Salter, Desert Dreams, Labadie. Then, I actually got blooms

off of 3 of my double classics. Sigh...I'm in Love. Then, I Got a few blooms off of Desert dreams and Labadie (Bigger Sigh). Next, anxiously waited for blooms from the others, without success. In the meantime, I dragged home "Final Touch", which has been in bloom for the past 3 weeks. Today? I placed an order of 25 Day lilies from Gilbert Wild Sale. I promised my husband we would plant an Iris bed and

I begrudge the space alloted for them. All I can think of is how many more day lilies I could plant there. P.S. My Husband doesn't yet know of the new daylily order, and I have yet to place an order for his Iris bulbs as promised.

Thanks for listening. I just had to vent.

This is a perfectly normal reaction, now go over to the Lily Auction and buy some more. Tell your husband that you heard there was a severe problem with Iris borers in your area and that you think Daylilys will do better, with less problems.

Some how I managed to only get a slight case of poison ivy. It's been two days now and it hasn't got any worse. I can't believe how lucky I am! I went back out there and did a thorough search and found poison ivy EVERYWHERE! Oddly enough, I was ripping it out with my hands, but only got a few blisters on my arms. I was on my knees, and got even less on my legs. I am extremely lucky!

I'm afraid you've answered your own question, the budget mentioned eliminates larger machines, heavy duty trans, etc. Also, you'd be spending an additional $200-300 for some type of aggressive tread rear tires, the "turf" tires are good for turf, lousy for traction on hills. You could certainly get a LT for that budget, but light duty trans and hills leads to early failure of the trans. If you have a lot of trees, a rider would be a PITA, you'd end up going back through with a push mower or string trimmer or spending a lot of time turning, backing, etc. The newer mowers I'm familiar with can be used in reverse, different position on the key switch, etc. I would think a decent self propelled walk behind would the be best way to go. They don't care if they're going straight or making curves. Right time of the year to be looking, lots of sales coming up. Whatever you end up with, investigate local service, both for in warranty and after. Also, if they come to you or do you have to haul it to them, do you have a way to haul a rider? Good luck, Ev

At least you are getting notice. Jail cells need plenty of tic before they are livable. You can go shopping for some nice bright patterned sheets, under-cot storage, a little Ikea desk and one of those cube storage systems for your clothes. And a few nice houseplants. Don't forget a little hand held bell so you can summon the jailer to bring you extra snacks when it is time for TV watching.

HaHa we've all been there. It gets worse, just go to an auction! Try to find a club in your area, they are fun and you can meet some fun people and show off your plants.

Hi welcome to the club, your hooked, I started with one now have around 1000 my yard is full so now I am moving the beds around to fit in a few 100 more it gets more interesting as years go by have fun and enjoy just dont let it take over your life good luck DICK

You've started out with some great daylilies! Welcome to a wonderful addiction. My husband didn't like daylilies at first, but now he's almost as bad as I am about adding more.

Welcome from this NE Mississippi daylily lover, grower and now breeder. I also grow about 50 different TB Iris and I love the Iris because they bloom first and then the daylilies start opening as the last of the Iris bloom for me. You can enjoy both of them. Now, I'm not as addicted to my Iris as I am my daylilies, not by a long shot! I'm still small compared to most here but I'm as addicted as anyone else is.

They are all right. Just one pretty Dl and then maybe a few more and then about 25 more and then 100 and then you get a second mortage so you can buy about 500 more! You will love every minute of it. So, have fun and just think of all the gorgeous blooms you will have next year.

Oh, by the way, the Lily Auction is the most wonderful place on the Web, except for this forum.

Oh wow! Thank you all for your warm, encouraging, and welcoming responses. I Have read, studied, and lurked at every single post ever made on this forum for the past 5 months. I'm not sure which has touched me more; the wonderful people and their generosity of sharing their their knowledge, triumphs, encouragements, frustrations, and humor; or the beauty of my first daylily bloom. Either way, I'm hooked. I am deeply honored to be part of this wonderful community. You all just wait until I learn how to post pics!

Oh, and p.s. I did finally order my husband's tall bearded irises today. After, of course, I told him about the new daylily purchases. I am now going over to the lily auction (checked it out earlier today for the first time). Thanks guys. Now I'll just get in to bigger trouble.
