Trouble Choosing a Lawn Mower (Big yard with Hills and small spaces)

I am not sure what kind of mower to get. I currently use a
regular push mower that is me propelled. The problem that I have is that my
acre lot is fairly hilly with a few 30 to 40 degree angles. The yard also has
many planter areas meaning that there are very few long straight cuts and you
have to weave in and out of areas between plant areas. Because of this I am thinking about a push
mower but because it is a larger yard, I would prefer a riding mower of some
sort. The more tractor looking ones have wider tires but a higher center of
gravity. The rear engine “Forest Gump snapper” types of mowers appear to have a
lower center of gravity but are narrower and have smaller engines so I am
concerned with their power to cut up and down the inclines. The Airens riding
mowers appear to sit much lower but I do not know much about them.

For push mowers, would self propelled be a pain with not
having a lot of straight aways? Some riding
mowers do not allow you to cut in reverse, which would be inconvenient because
of the yard is fairly broken requiring maneuverability. Is there a type of mower that you would
recommend.

Is there a type of transmission that works well with hills?
Am I better off with manual so that I can down shift as I enter the hills, or
would the current automatic ones do ok with the hills?

I would strongly prefer to not spend more than $1,000 to
$2,000. Any assistance that you could provide is greatly appreciated.
