Trip to Lasting Dreams Daylilies, Photos

Hi All,

Last Sunday, I took a trip out to visit a fellow BADS (Buffalo Area Daylily Society) member, Carol Haj at her daylily nursery. If any of you are going to or at the Nationals, she will be there. Make sure to say hi to her. She's super nice.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and I ended up taking a lot of pics! So this is just a sample, there's a whole bunch to check out on the link below. I know some of you like to look at lots of pics : )

I am sure that you had a marvelous time. It looks to be a very pretty pace. And so many lovely daylilies. Just awesome. Thats for posting!

Thanks for your comments! It's great to be able to share my photos with people who are interested in them! Ellie - I agree with you that Grace Stamile's daylilies were the bluest I've seen and I also like that Reilly seedling! Here's a link to my photos from Ladybug Daylilies. Dan Hansen's garden was even bigger than the Stamiles'. He also grows corn and huge zucchinis. He tries to avoid using insecticides - thats why a lot of photos have bugs in them. He said they are called lovebugs. (There were thousands of them while we were in Florida and they ended up coating our windshield whenever we drove on the highway.) He has five very friendly cats to help control pests around the garden. He also has a lot of older, cheaper daylilies for sale, many of them are Ra Hansen's (his mother). He also has big collections of daylilies from Curt Hanson, Ned Roberts and the Salters. He is working a lot with edge no eye daylilies. Kay, I loved that bloom too. Kathy, Seems you're correct : ) Elizabeth, Lol, about the pot ghetto. I'm already looking forward to us going next year. I know Hilde is. She already emailed me about how we should plan for late July next year. Cindy, Lol, no, he only picked on me! Like lying that a $5 lily cost $200. He probably felt bad about the stray bag. Driving away without everything sounds like something I would do. I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip! : ) Oh and I did something dumb. I found my NOID daylily from a post I made about a week ago. I had purchase what was suppose to be Storm of the Century in a plant coop. So going through the field, there it is. I forgot to take a pic of the tag!! Here's a pic. Rita, You would love visiting all the daylily places out this way. Mantis, Thank you, I fixed the pic. The tag to the right in the pic was probably the correct one. Unfortunately the leaves are covering most of it. Jason and Rena, Thanks, it is hard to decide what to bring home while there, but Mozambique Nights really stood out. I always bring only so much cash so I have to behave myself! Of course what does Brent tell me this year, they now take CC#'s! I stuck to my budget though. I also brought home Morticia which I did not take a pic of, but it has always looked good there when I've seen it so it came home with me. And I got a huge clump of a NOID Munson for $5 which I also didn't take a pic of, and I should of! I liked the way it looked and Brent didn't know what it was. Since he isn't selling any being unnamed, I lucked out. Nameless is ok with me :) Remy

Did you take all the pics on the link? There are a lot of nice ones there. Bart Roberts, for one, caught my eye, as well as some of the seedlings. I'm surprised that some of these thrive that far north--ones such as Can You See Me and Strawberry Lace (which did nothing here). There is no substitute for seeing things in a garden in your area.

Beautiful flowers! I always want to visit a daylily garden, & there are at least a couple in KY. One of these days I'm gonna do it. I got invitations to a couple who were having open gardens this year, but I thought it seemed late to be going this year. My daylilies have really faded, mostly reblooms going now.

Red Hot Boom was really pretty in person. All of Nicole Harry's were. Carol and I even discussed her since I was surprised to see daylilies from Florida doing so well.

Yes, I took all the pics. I could of taken even more!
The discussion about Nicole Harry and hardiness included a couple ideas. One, Carol dips all of her daylilies in s solution (I can't remember off the top of my head.) It seems that daylilies are often harboring a disease (can't remember name!) that causes the tops to die off sort of like a failure to thrive. She first heard about it when there was trip to daylily place in a warmer location, and many of the attendees daylilies that they brought home were croaking. A mass death was occurring. So it seems that the disease sort of lurks where warmer, but in colder areas it kills them. A couple very well known hybridizers were the ones who knew what was happening and suggested the dip.
Two, the snow blanket that occurs around here in winter is a good insulator and protects them.

You really should go! It is amazing to see so many varieties. This weeknd, a couple friends and I are going to Cottage Garden Daylilies, we make a trip of it every year.
I really feel lucky to have such great daylily places around here.
