My Florida Daylily trip!!

I got back from 5 days in Florida, I had planned for months, and was so excited to know that I could visit a few daylily gardens. so I did get to see Ladybug Daylilies, Dan Hansen (went there 2 times) and went to Art Gallery Gardens, Lambertson's place. I can't even begin to tell ya all, just how fantastic both places were. A ton of bloom going on, and just beautiful, I took so many pictures, and it took some time to load up to photobucket, and then just to decide which ones.!!

I could have gotten to a few more gardens , but quite frankly there is no ocean to be had in Ohio,!!! so I spent time on the beach, which I dearly love, and it was NOT crowded, went to Daytona Beach, no races and no motorcyles, I was told it was most likely the quietest week of the year!! I did not know that ahead of time, but it was perfect. The whole time was perfect. When I got home, I saw that I was behind on this forum by at least 6 pages!! This place is so crazy busy, but that is what I love about it, I have spent the last few evenings catching up looking and reading all the posts. Here is Ladybug daylilies, just an hour drive from where I was staying.

I can tell you, that Dan Hansen, is the best ever!! He spent considerable time with me, showing me all his seedlings, and giving so much information about all aspects of daylilies, I wish I had videotaped him!! I never cared for the sculpting in daylilies, but now I love it. Here is one of Dan's intros. Scarface

Oh, I hate to post a pic of myself, but I am with Dan, and had to have the proof!!!! It was a fun time. I am standing up on my toes!! Dont know why except he is so tall!!! I think I spent at least 7 hours at ladybug. I brought home 9 daylilies and a Ladybug Shirt!!

My other stop was at Lambertson's place. They were the nicest people ever, and also spent considerable time with me, I could have been an entire tour bus!! but I was just one person and they gave me the full treatment! I brought home 2 from the Lambertsons, and I could not believe the size of the clumps they gave to me. No, not clumps, but monster clumps, I'm talking at least 12 fans on each on, and they gave me one as a bonus, so I came home with over 25 fans from them!! Lots of bloom here too!

Here is Hyacinth Macaw, and yes, it was that blue, I couldn't take my eyes off of it!!

Here I am now with Rachel Lambertson, once again, they were soooo great to me!!

This is around 2 o'clock in the afternoon, after I had returned from a garden visit, and it was like this every day I was there!!!! It was just beautiful

Wow, what a neat trip you had. I love the Hyacinth Macaw. I have never met them but I have spoken with them on the phone. My last time there, I was at Trimmers, Reillys and Abajian's. Glad you had fun!! Ellie

YOU GO GIRL LOL! Sounds like you had a blast on your vacation at both the daylily gardens and the beaches. Plus I love the fact that you posted some pictures of your lovely self. Now we can all know what you look like (you look lovely and happy). Do post more of your vacation photos and daylily shots from your tour gardens too after you have had a chance to regroup now that you are back home.

Mike, I think it's wonderful that you take your m-i-l to Hawaii every other year and see her on Mother's day in SC every year! She's lucky! Susan, I got 15 viburnum obovatums to use around Claire's lanai - I'll be taking 2 of them home, to plant on a wet site. The area I'm working is still wet. Her property is lower than the surrounding houses, so, since everybody here waters their lawns 2 or 3 times a week (underground sprinklers), this house gets all the runoff, at least in the back. I chose v. obovatum because it's evergreen, which gives them privacy in the pool all year, grows fast, is a swamp plant, and makes fruit that birds love. I got 3 rhododendron canescens 'Claire' - had to get a cultivar that has my daughter's name!, one more cornus florida var. 'Weaver' -' Weaver' and 'Madison' have HUGE flowers and grow like weeds, 2 more hammamelis virginiana/witch hazels, and 1 more viburnum rufidulum. I brought my seed tray with 25 ptelea trifoliata planted seeds - I got these last fall from one of the p. trifoliatas that grows in my garden. I didn't want to trust my husband to keep them watered while I was gone. Since ptelea trifoliata makes such a good understory tree, I thought I'd have room for a lot more of them - the giant swallowtails should appreciate it! I can't believe how much my grandson has grown! And his hair has turned dark like my daughter's - he looks just like her! Mary, I'm going to be too busy to do anything but work here - maybe next time we can get together. The ends of some of my fingers are cracking and starting to bleed, but I want to finish this job! I talked to my husband, and he said that a PVS emerged while I was gone. He released it yesterday - thank goodness the weather is warm there as well as here! I saw my first butterfly here yesterday. It was a big sulphur, too brightly yellow/orange to be a cloudless sulphur, so it was undoubtedly an orange barred sulphur, but it flew by too fast for me to be sure. MissSherry

I just love their daylilies, and the two I have are doing so well, I have won another on the auction and I have my eye on several. Thank you so much for posting the pictures, you little enabler you. Now I see a couple more that I need. I envy you that visit, but I am so glad you got to make it. What fun!!! What an absolutely wonderful time. and didn't you clean up with some fabulous daylilies. Glad Everyone is enjoying them! Kay, Red Hot Boom was really pretty in person. All of Nicole Harry's were. Carol and I even discussed her since I was surprised to see daylilies from Florida doing so well. Mantis, Yes, I took all the pics. I could of taken even more! The discussion about Nicole Harry and hardiness included a couple ideas. One, Carol dips all of her daylilies in s solution (I can't remember off the top of my head.) It seems that daylilies are often harboring a disease (can't remember name!) that causes the tops to die off sort of like a failure to thrive. She first heard about it when there was trip to daylily place in a warmer location, and many of the attendees daylilies that they brought home were croaking. A mass death was occurring. So it seems that the disease sort of lurks where warmer, but in colder areas it kills them. A couple very well known hybridizers were the ones who knew what was happening and suggested the dip. Two, the snow blanket that occurs around here in winter is a good insulator and protects them. ngraham, You really should go! It is amazing to see so many varieties. This weeknd, a couple friends and I are going to Cottage Garden Daylilies, we make a trip of it every year. I really feel lucky to have such great daylily places around here. Remy

WOW; What some gorgeous photo's,I bet you had a really good time seeing all them daylilies,and now you have lots of work to get all the ones you brought home, planted. The last photo is very pretty too with the beach..I really injoyed the tour with your photo'd.

Thanks for sharing some of your vacation photos. It was great to see you with Dan Hansen and Rachel Lambertson. I grow so many daylilies by both of Dan and Luddy. I've met Luddy in person, but have only communicated with Dan by email. I adore your photos of Scarface and Purple Dragonfly and would love to have both in my garden. Please share more of your photos with us.

that does look absolutely inspiring... wow glad you had such a great time, I would have had a tough time wanting to see every flower. ha. I do look forward sometime to a destination vacation like that visiting a hybridizer's garden etc...

Seeing your vacation photos brings all the memories back when I was down there for Convention in 2007. Dan Hansen is quite a character huh? He's great! Lots of bloom there at Ladybug!
I'd have to say my favorite place visited was with the Lambertsons! I love the art they have around their gardens, and their flowers are to die for! LOVE Hyacinth Macaw...WOW!
I'm feeling a dire need to get back down there, maybe next year!

Love the picture of you with Rachel Lambertson. You look like you could burst with joy! Your excited really jumped through the screen and I am so happy that you had such a wonderful time.

Please keep the pictures coming. It's nice to see the gardens.

I have to ask... in the picture of you with Rachel, do you know what those posts are for? They have picqued my curiosty.

What terrific photos, and how fun to see pics of the hybridizers. The Lambertson daylilies are gorgeous, but I especially like the photo of Scarface.
