Question for Rita (Paul Owen Daylilies)

Hi Rita,

I know you have and love many of Paul Owen's daylilies. My mother-inlaw was at the Region 2 convention and got me a couple. Do you have any thoughts on Dyna Girl or Bohemian Rhapsody?

I am not Rita, but if you keep it, we will see how Bohemian Rhapsody does in different zones because I planted it about a month ago. Paul Owen's daylilies do really well in my garden too. I would think you will be pleased with them since everyone I have does really well.

Julie? Try Google with keywords from the post you're looking for. (clue: whatever Jan's username is will help significantly) All of our posts are out there, still hosted here at Gardenweb. (I hunted down a few of mine outside the website and despite missing pages below). You might try a Boardreader that raised someone's eyebrow recently as well. This is a fairly Archaic website design...bordering on the Paleolithic. I'm sure it's a pain to maintain but an upgrade would likely co$t for membership with the huge number of users/forums and easy access...Well, that should explain our 2 page forum, anticiaption of the 2010 posts... Even using outside photohosts this forum burns alot of bandwidth for a solid 4 months and remains active year-round... Another thought is the internetarchive.com, it's slowed in recent years. I think it spawned from flame wars in the early 'net days allowing people to drudge up old posts rather than really serve any purpose. Rita, You will be thrilled with the quality of the seedlings! Mine are happily in the ground, and I must say that I am as excited to see mine bloom next year as I am with any of the other DL's I have ordered this fall. My bonus for my first order was 7R-558 ... the flower is very pretty...not what I would call a standout on bloom alone.. but look at the specs!! And look at the branching in the second pic! I was thrilled! 5.75" flower on 26" scape, EMRe, 5-way branching, 25-30 bud count... and a hardy dormant. Hi Rita, I'm expecting them to come tomorrow, along with clown Parade, and a Huldine clematis that I ordered in late June. I have got to get back outside after I spend a few more minutes in here. My Citrix and Maklaysian Market Place are shipping October 6th, My Roycraft order is shipping October 30th, and Maryott's, Marietta, and Aren't I Pretty orders will be here sometime this month. I am so lucky to live a mere few hours from Paul's place. I visit at least once a season. It is truly one of the most beautiful locations for a daylily garden. But the BEST reason to visit is that he is such a wonderful person! If at all doable, a trip to Paul's is definitely a summer treat! Here are some pics from my visit there this summer and the one before. Paul's place was a horse farm before he bought it. This is the enormous barn that has been turned into a combination reception area and garden equipment storage area. It even has a bathroom and kitchen in it. Here is the other side of the barn where he has set up a nice eating area for large groups. (this a great place to bring your club!) Here is the delicious spread he had for visitors who stopped in on their way home from the region 15 meeting.

Edward: I grow DYNA GIRL from Paul Owen.
I posted a pic in one of my threads. I'd have to recheck the budcount and scapes, etc. It has been here 2 full seasons. The photo was taken in early July.
Here it is again. No clump shots yet.

Julia, that DYNA GIRL is gorgeous. I just looked it up on the Slightly Different Nursery website and I like your photo better. $70 price tag. Ouch. I've been hunting for a nice pink, but this one will have to wait.

This reminds me that I didn't post pictures about our clubs visit to Paul's garden in June. About 15 of us carpooled down there. He gave every one of us who visited a piece of his DYNA GIRL, so it is new here also. Will try to pull out some of those pictures. He is getting his garden ready to be on the 2014 AHS National tour. His Display Garden area looks great - he has added a lot of companion plants since I was there last year!

Julia, your picture is lovely. I will probably use Dyna Girl in my hybridizing. Bohemian Rhapsody will be a bold splash of colour in the garden.

He sent me really great cultivars this year. I was very happy with what he sent me. Slightly Different Nursery is now on my "best daylily vendors" list!

Edward: The height is right on target with the registration but I haven't checked this years bud count/branching. I also noted he lists it on the AHS as DOR but his website says SEV. I can't recall how it was over the winter so will have to make note this year.Odd eh?

I have never been disappointed with what Paul sends. I love the Viola Vernetta one he also sent.

But back to your question....

Have you checked out PINK DEBUTANTE? It is an older Stamile registration. I'm not sure if that meets your requirements for hybridizing but that one does great here. He sent me a huge clumps of it.

If I were to go with an older Stamile it would be San Ignacio. Anyway, I am trying to keep to rounder forms. Dyna Girl has round petals and an interesting edge. I also like that it has Shores of Time in the parentage.
