Speak Previews of Paul Owen 2010 intros

Those of us who have ordered from Paul Owen and his Slightly Different Nursery or anyone who signs up get the Slightly Different Times e-mail newsletter which comes out about 4 times a year. The new Fall Newsletter just came out. I love to read them because they are funny and always interesting letting us all know some of the happenings at the Daylily Farm.

There are some previews of some of his 2010 intros at the end. Oh, my, my, my. Very gorgeous!

6-270A is my favorite. It is beautiful, dormant and well branched.

I love the color combo and patterned eye showing in the double. I also love the crested seedling he has. WOW for me. I am working on crested DL's. May have to get one of those from Paul. He is so much fun, and so generous with his DL's.

Many of us regulars on this forum bought those seedlings from Paup Owen last fall when he had that selected seedling sale. That one is the first of mine to bloom. Honestly, they are so nice that they should be registered daylilies but we don't care, we just love them. maryl-- Hee, hee, hee. Lots of lily bulbs were new here this spring and still to bloom. You know I will be sneaking in those lily pictures as I go along. The Red Lilies are Red Asiatic Border Lilies (short lilies). I have lilies and daylilies planted around that birdbath which is at the end of a path in back of my garage. I put in a small garden there and it badly needed a focul point so I moved in the birdbath which really looks good there. This is the path I am talking about. I posted this picture on one of my threads on Sunday. Andrea- I don't know how. The asiatics start up here just as my roses are finishing the spring flush and there are always rose and lily combos going on here. All I can say is some of the asitics are later than others. For instance, the spotted Tango lillies start way after the solid color Asiatics have been going a long time. But some new Orientals I put in this spring are starting blooming now and they should not be. Plus some trumpet lillies that all all new this spring are blooming now and they should be much later.

Which Hybridizer's Intros Do You Look Forward to Most?

Pat and Grace Stamile sold Floyd Cove and moved to CA but both are still hybridizing. However, part of their agreement in the sale was that they couldn't introduce anything for a period of years. They ARE finding it a challenge to hybridize on the Pac. coast - blooms don't open as well, etc. But I look for them to have some introductions over the next couple of years. What they are doing now is on a much more limited basis than the big operation they once ran, however. I too LOVE almost anything from Judy Davisson, Curt Hanson and Jamie Gossard, I also grow a lot of plants from Reg. 3 hybridizers because they were hybridized locally and do well here : Margo Reed, Jim Murphy, Pat Cochenour, Don Herr, all have great plants that perform like troopers in my garden and I never hesitate to add their plants. I do grow quite a few plants from Reg.2 hybridizers in recent years - have enjoyed some from Bret Clement,Sandy Holmes, Gerald Bushong and others. Lots of great hybridizers out there! I will say (and it has taken years of growing daylilies to learn this) that in recent years I have shied away from some of the Southern grown plants in favor of those which are grown in similar climates. Some of those beauties with the big edges for example, never look like that here, and I'm tired of the frustration of trying to grow a Southern belle that will never be happy here.Some Southern plants that generally do well here on the edge of zones 6/7 are the Ellers plants and Nan Wilkerson's.

Vickie- Don't plan to buy deep south hybridized daylilies and have then bloom late here. They usually bloom midseason when brought up north. But there are exceptions. As Julie C has suggested in other threads, look into some of the Margo Reed and Jime Murphy intros instead of the deep south ones. They have lots of lates and some VLs. Now, I do NOT like spiders but even I was able to find some UFOs and just others more to my taste there. For instance, I just love RED HILL and its its only a very open form, not even a UFO. Blooms late. RED HILL is in that driveway bed section picture. JIM Murphys LAST CHANCE FOR ROMANCE is in the late blooming bed in back of the garage and not even close to blooming yet. Registered as VL. CONDILLA is one of those oldies but goodies that I would never be without. Bj- The section in back of the garage is done with late and very late bloomers. That driveway section in the picture above is a combination of late bloomers and midseason northern hybridized daylilies that have a long bloomtime. That means while they start off at the normal time, they end late as they have lots of buds that don't open all at once. They also have lots of scapes and that makes for lots of flowers. A good example is Melanie Masons MABOU in the front row there. This is one of those daylilies that just seems to bloom forever. My hope last year was to have peak bloom here in July as normal and then anothyer peak bloom time after that with the lates and very lates. I had hoped for peak in August but everythings too new to know when that might be.

I got ROSE F. KENNEDY from Mary when it first came out- back in 2008, just after the Houston Convention if I remember correctly. Cannot tell you how many people have tried to buy it from me since then! Even several hybridizers have called long distance trying to talk me out of a piece!( this was 2-3 years ago.) It is now hopefully much better distributed than it was 4 years ago. But the garden will be on Regional tour next summer and I really wanted both of these to be nice clumps(and they are - both are about 8-9 fans or so.) Emerald Starburst rebloomed this summer- that was a first.

His website is great, i love his creations. I loved the last 2010 intro the best, but the 1st was super too.

I really loved his propery, and the views of the mountains in the background -- wow -- I want to move in!! I was on his website just looking at different pics, i really enjoyed it. thanks Rita.

I really like the first one. I bought 18 general cultivars from him this spring and received a 2009 intro as one of my bonus plants. He's a super nice guy and I won't hesitate to order from next spring as well.

I am so lucky to live a mere few hours from Paul's place. I visit at least once a season. It is truly one of the most beautiful locations for a daylily garden. But the BEST reason to visit is that he is such a wonderful person! If at all doable, a trip to Paul's is definitely a summer treat!

Here are some pics from my visit there this summer and the one before.

Paul's place was a horse farm before he bought it. This is the enormous barn that has been turned into a combination reception area and garden equipment storage area. It even has a bathroom and kitchen in it.

Here is the other side of the barn where he has set up a nice eating area for large groups. (this a great place to bring your club!)

Here is the delicious spread he had for visitors who stopped in on their way home from the region 15 meeting.

Here is a view of his daylily beds across the driveway from the barn. There are gentle mountains in the distance where ever you look.

By the way, I love his newsletters too. I think he has the best dl website around! I will post some pics of his intros and seedlings I took as soon as I get some chores done lol.

I don't know him personally, but my neighbor speaks very highly of him. He named JANATTITUDE after her. It's a very pretty pink double that was introduced this year.

I have heard him give talks twice and he says the nicest things about your friend Jan that he named JANATTITUDE after. She sounds like she is a great inspirational person!

Here is a picture of Paul and his mother I took last summer. She went skydiving on her last birthday.

As soon as I find the notes I took that day I will post some photos of his daylilies. (I have GOT to clean up this office lol)
