It sure is a beauty,but $600. for a daylilly?? Bet the person that put it up for sale starting at 49.99 had no idea they would get this much for it.

It sure is gorgeous but the only way you'd get me to spend that much on one plant is if I had a few too many glasses of wine before getting on the auctions...which I don't EVER do..thank the Lord! ......LOL

Boy, the picture of the daylily is pretty. Is that picture worth $630.00??? Apparently to the winner.

Why wouldn't the owner introduce the daylily instead of selling it? I realize what a treasure it is because of the genes, but couldn't the owner have made more $$ by introducing and then selling as an individual? Is it possible that some part of the plant habit, bud count, branching is lacking and someone wants to breed that with another daylily to improve on any flaw? I am just curious. I understand why a hybridizer would pay that, but why would the owner sell it? I have noticed for over a year that this seller's seedlings command BIG bucks.

I know that with the Gaskins ---it's about getting older and not breeding as much- I know that they have a wonderful reputation for beautiful flowers --
What they have breed and what's behind this flower is in demand by many breeders.

I breed Dogs and I'll tell you when you sell something thats worth breeding or showing you are buying that person's years of hard work---

Since I won an auction from her last year, the winner is Nicole Harry in FL, she is a hybridizer. The Gaskins said last year that they were getting older and had lost their extra help at the garden. Therefore they sold most of their seedling stock to Nicole, but said they would continue to sell some of their seedlings on the lilyauction. This was posted on their website for awhile. Last year a seedling sold for a whopping 3500.00, believe it or not. There was a big discussion on here about that one.

I bid last year...went in with a friend, won a 5 fan clump of VOODOO MAGIC X DOVES IN FLIGHT. We tried to go after that $3,500.00, but dropped out early. The emails between the two of us that night were hilarious.

I ended up with a nice double fan, for much less than a single fan of some of today's new intros. And when it bloomed, I forgot all about the money spent:)

Now after you buy can you introduce your pricey seedling that you bought? Just wondering. Then it would have a name.

The point is moot, since her identity has been revealed. I doubt she cares as it is nothing bad...quite the contrary.

My opinion only, I just didn't think it was up to me to name the person. And as to the names not being secret....I don't think there's a big list of LA names and true identities... or at least I don't know about it! You know who someone is if you have had business with them. It may not be secret, but it is not public knowledge, per se. You can look up feedback on someone and if they have a "my page", but I don't know/see where you can look up real names...

Just like on here, some people don't mind having their real names revealed and some do. It should be up to each to decide. When you sign up, whether here or on the LA, you choose what you will be called. If people choose to use their real names, fine....if they don't, I'm of the mind that they choose their user names for a reason.

My thought (and mine only) was that the answer to the question was actually...not one of 'us' as in regular posters here.

Btw, I agree with lefox and others...value is what someone is willing to pay. It's kind of exciting to think that daylilies can have such value. And, for some, it's a business expense, I expect...

Rita, someone may have already answered by the time I post this, but a seedling's rights belong to whoever it bloomed for first. So, assuming the buyer has all of the seedling (important...read the listings, some people only sell a few fans and will tell you that it is not all of that particular seedling), he/she will need the permission of (in this instance) the Gaskins to register it. It would usually be registered as a Gaskins-whoever daylily.

I have no idea if the VM X DIF seedling was the entire clump of that seedling, or just a portion. I have no plans to investigate registration. Truth be told, I'm really not much of an eye and edge guy. My friend simply asked me if I wanted to get in on the bidding fun, and I'm glad I did. The bidding that night was like no other, and the seedling is a beautiful addition to our garden.

I knew it was Nicole Harry as soon as looked at that link. I have seen her selling things on the auction sometimes and don't see that her identity is any big secret.

Not I! If I had something that beautiful, I'd never be able to turn loose of it. Awesome! The Gaskins really do have some fabulous seedlings.

I agree that the Gaskin seedlings are all pretty awesome. I have bid on a few myself, but at the stage I'm at in my hybridizng program.......I just can't justify spending that kind of money on hit and miss hybridizing. Well maybe I could justify it if I had more money than God. I just think that those genetics are better served in the hands of someone who has had more experience. I have had a world of experience breeding horses.....but none of it seems to apply to daylilies. I have bred some of the best mares to Germany's top stallions and still ended up with foals that will never go anywhere....it's an extremely hedged crap shoot. The best genetics in the world will only go as far as the skill and knowledge of the person using them....otherwise it's an "even a blind squirrel finds a nut"....kind of experience. Still I'm happy for the people who will be able to enjoy the beauty of of thess flowers in their gardens for years to come, and I wish them the best of luck in their hybridizing efforts.
