My grandfather was a veterinarian. His name was James Alexander. We called him Doc so when I saw the daylily named Doc Alexander I had to have it. Fortunately it does well here.

I'd like to buy Infinity & Beyond because it reminds me of my grandsond when he was little, but I just don't like it enough to pay that much.
I've thought about buying Willie Lyles because my great grandpa's name is William Lyles.
OT again, I probably won't ever buy any with snake in the name, because I hate snakes.

I've gotten a few because of the names-Jamaican Me Crazy & Jamaican Music because of a trip to Jamaica of course. Family names. Not too many. But I am attracted to odd names. I should never have looked up Desperate Housecats! I like the name & the daylily, but then I looked at other daylilies & saw a couple I really love. And Clowns in Washington, great name & nice daylily. Those 2 may get added to my long wish list. MUST stay away from those sites!

I haven't bought any because of a name, I really focus on the bloom. But I must admit there are some I just wouldn't buy because of the name. Not that I can think of an example now.

I have to like the looks of the bloom and the name to buy one. I was initially attacted to MEET JOE BLACK and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S because I love those movies so much. BORN TO RUN is a gorgeous bloom, and it didn't hurt that I'm a Springsteen fan.

Fat Lady Sings bought it at Marietta because my wife said I had too many daylilies and to start something else.

Christine, *g*... I bought Sinister Minister for the name. I just thought it was sort of fun. This is the second year it's bloomed here and it's got a thin line of metallic gold around the edge that looks nice against the black.

Oh, for heaven's sakes, floota, there's a daylily called 'Desperate Housecats'? That is hilarious. Googling, googling... Hmm... nothing. It must be new or obscure, but I love the name.

Yes, DESPERATE HOUSE CATS is one hybridized by my friend, Bret Clement, who is AHS Legal Counsel. He has a series with funny cat names. Here's his pic of it:

He also did CLOWNS IN WASHINGTON. i sent him a name last year that IMHO would be a perfect "companion name" to go with it, and he liked it. I hope that he'll use that this year. Another one that makes me laugh is Jim Murphys OUT OF SANE.

Oh, quite a bit, name is a big influence :) I also won't buy some because of the name. Too bad some with the names I like I can't find anywhere. E.g. I would love to have 'Claire Bear' daylily, but I don't even know how it looks.

There are some I won't buy because of the name, either.

In general I am not crazy about plants named after people whom I don't personally know, although I confess that I have a couple of those in the garden. ('Bill Norris' is one such daylily.)

If I know (or knew) the person (even slightly, as in a fellow daylily club member), then that is a different matter.

The above names, just to be clear, are a first name, optional middle name, last name designation. Such names are very narrowly intended for a certain person (though there may in fact be more than a few such individuals walking around on Earth who bear that name).

On the other hand, daylilies which are more broadly named with a personal first name, middle name combination are quite welcome (depending, of course, on the bloom and plant habits). This kind of name can be romantic and feminine (if a woman's name) or noble and dignified (if a man's name) - attractive in either case. I still grow 'Rose Emily', to give a feminine example. (I don't have any masculine examples, but just thinking of some male relatives, their first-and-middle names are an appealing combination.)

Then there are those names which have nothing to do with (human) people (real or otherwise), but which I also don't care to see in my garden. ('Satanic' anything, for example, need not apply.)

Perhaps someone should start a thread on this topic (names we don't like). It could be an eye-opener for some hybridizers.

I love reading about the ones people picked and why. I just found one today called "radiation biohazard." Very pretty considering the name! A meter I use at work has a low level radioactive source. Not enough even equal a xray a year, but enough so I have to go through special training to use it.

I have only bought two just for the name-I Love Shirley (Mom's name and she didn't appreciate Squirrely Shirley lol) and Blushing Jellyfish-just because I thought the name was funny-but I did like the color. Sometime I need to find a Jack flower (Dad's name)

I bought 'Funny Cide' because I'm a horse racing fan and he won the Kentucky Derby among other big races.

I bought Hosta 'Captain Kirk' because I love the original Star Trek.

I have Huechera 'Marmalade' because my cat's name is Marmalade.

I bought Matt because it's the name of one of my sons. I don't have it anymore because it bloomed in the foliage. It was a great bloomer though and it was hard to let it go.

I do it all the time. With all kinds of flowers - sometimes I notice the name first, and google it to see what flower looks like. Sometimes it finds a home in my garden regardless of it's looks.
Often the opposite is true: there are several dark gorgeous irises I love, however the "devil" this and "devil" that will keep me away from purchasing them. Hybridisers (sp?) need to keep it in mind before naming such beauties so carelessly.

I bought "Gary's Big Blues" because that is what I first noticed about my husband Gary when I met him!
Polymerous, I never got Radiation Biohazard because of the name too. Then I received it as a bonus plant and I love it!

anything Siloam.... but that's not really just the name, it's the hybridizer.. ha
someone mentioned they don't like names of people they don't know and others have said they don't like famous names on daylilies. how interesting!
I wanted to add that when i first worked as a yardboy for Mrs. Henry during college there were Siloam + names all over the place... years later I would recognize several names as hybridizers which made them all less romantic than the names of her children, preacher, dentist, housemaid, owner of IGA, best friend "Ruby"... etc from Siloam... hee hee
