Easy (cheap) rose trellis

This trellis was very easy (if you have someone handy with cutting conduit. This time I had an assistant :-))

Materials:

(4) 10' long 3/8" diameter rebar

(2) 8' conduit to fit rebar

wire

metal cutter (jigsaw handheld with metal blade)

Trellis part

1. Cut one 8' conduit into (4) 2' pieces

2. Pound these into the ground about 1-1.5' deep to hold rebar

3. put each 10' rebar into conduit, push into firmly

Top part

4. cut (2) 20" pieces from other conduit

5. Cut 2 notches in each piece to make a"U" shape

6. Bend slowly or metal will break

Attach "U" pieces to top of each pair of rods

Wire both together when done

This trellis is very stable and should survive most winds and weight loads. You could even fill the bottom conduit with epoxy if you never wanted to move it.

Tomorrow I'll attach the rose to it's new trellis.

The next pillar (it's not really a trellis is it?) I'm thinking of putting two different colored roses and making the pillar wider.

Marcia Gorgeous!!! Julia-Denise I was hoping somebody said seeds. That is the ultimate bargain, you should know being a "world famous cook as you are". Fancy and rare produce and herbs at your fingertips, especially if it is organic. Did you check Whole Foods (Whole Paycheck) lately? You cannot beat the price of growing your own fruit too. Bought a Loquat (fruiting now) for $10. My Dragon Fruit $10. Calamondin (use the fruit already) for $10. In Phoenix I had baskets of oranges, lemons, apricots, plums, figs and others to give away. People looked forward to get them, as some varieties you couldn't even buy. Now, I am looking forward for my fruit trees to grow. (I just saw a cherimoya for $10 at the store). In the meantime, I will do as much seeds as I can possible can. It is not only fun, it saves us money! Willy

Cheap, easy, homemade bean support?

I was mesmerized by all the beautiful arches, and as of this afternoon I have my very own cattle panel, bent in half with the edges temporarily tied at the bottom, plus four "U-posts," which is what the store recommended I use to anchor my arch. I'm probably about to validate dumb-blonde jokes, but what do I do now? How does one go about setting it up? Does a post go in the ground first, and then a corner of the arch attached to it? And when we cut the ties at the bottom, will the panel stay more or less bent? (I leaned on it, so the bend is pretty distinct.) I'm surprised at how heavy the panel is. I'm thinking maybe this is a two-person job. I can hear the jokes now......How many blondes does it take to set up a cattle panel? LOL Your help is appreciated Âthanks!! Susan

Heya, I understand it will be hard to tie them together as it would be slippery - makes sense. I will give it a shot - if that doesn't work I'll try the netting option. I did see a couple of successful Teepees made from PVC - but I won't kid myself I know it will be hard. Yeah I definitely plan on using the twine in the Teepee to allow the plants to climb up. I plan on "training" the plants for that. Denise: I love your easy trellis. My husband made an obelisk out of rebar for me but welded it together. He was very precise about its construction. This was despite my admonishment that no one would observe if it was 1/8" off here or there as the vine would soon cover it.

Now, one year later, he good-naturedly laments that "no one can see it", "it" being the underlying carefully constructed obelisk.

Your method is something most of us could construct and be satisfied with the results, especially after it is showing off a lovely vine or climbing rose.

That would be great for the heavy vines I have that pulled down my black metal trellis last year.

Denise,

I am interested in that rose since I saw that pic! Does it bloom well for you? My Madame Issac Pierre has been very stingy and I can only expect spring bloom from her. This, after 6 years!

I am building a new bed right near the front door and I know that the Marie's will go in there. Have yet to decide on the climber, but it will be growing on a "Denise" obelisk.

Do you have pics of your passion vine? The one on your original rebar trellis. It must really be something now.

Dr. Reynaud had a very good spring, lots of blooms and then I moved him :-(. He's been in the garden for a little over a year and grown a lot but I can't say whether the bloom is repeat or not. Now that he is in a FINAL spot time will tell.

I also have a young Mme. Periere in a pot waiting to be planted joining Bourbons already planted Souv.dl Malmaison and climbing SDLM. This heat and no rain has them waiting it out.

About the passionvine: not a good idea to have planted it near the front entry. First it looked eaten up by the caterpillars and then the bad winter hit it and it looked even worse. Also it was very invasive, coming up miles away in the lawn. So I dismantelled the small trellis, put "Incense" in a pot while figuring out a safe place to put her. Many many gulf fritillaries flying around let me know they've found passionvine somewhere.

I'm thinking of sinking a large pot in the ground so the roots can't escape and replanting with a much taller pillar structure.
