Free Native Hawaiian Plants

My wife is a teacher at a public school. She is trying to do a eco project with her 4th grade students. She mentioned that she saw on TV a ad that offered free native palntes. She did not write the web address or the phone number down at the time. If there is anyone that might know of a place she could get some free native hawaiian plant seeds or seedlings that would be greatly appreceated. Thank you for your help.

I also may be able to help. Have her email me at johndp8888@aol.com. I will need to know where she will be growing the plants - elevation and rainfall - to get suitable materials. Or list the island and area of the island where they will be grown, Some like dry, some like wet, etc.

It's difficult for ordinary people to export seeds or other plant material to any other state or to a foreign country because it requires an inspection from the Department of Agriculture. However, a number of businesses are set up to export seeds, cuttings, and small plants. Do a google search for "Hawaii seeds cuttings" and you'll get the websites of a bunch of these companies.

There are many Native Hawaiian plants that could be grown indoors, if you have the temperature, light levels and lack of cold drafts. EBay is a good source.
