Where do you have them planted? I have 3, not from the bonanza...but I just moved one of the babies to full sun and it's not taking it very well. It's been 2 weeks now and tomorrow I will be moving it. The other two are in morning sun and dappled afternoon sun and they are doing great, they even have the red/green leaves.

I have 2. One looks good and the other looks dead. Same size pots, same sun, same water.?????

I had mine in almost a full sun, and had to move them to partial shade. Now they are doing great. I think they just had too much sun!!! The leaves were getting burned.

I had 3. One faded away the other two look good but the full
sun is too much. I think I need to moved them to morning sun.
Afternoon sun is burning the leaves. Disappointed here.
I hope to get them healthier.

Mine are in full sun. Maybe that's the problem. I'm going to move them tomorrow to a shadier location.

Mine are in full sun. But get alot of water. I think some afternoon shade would be best, but I don't think I'll move mine just yet since they seem to like where they are.

You're just fooling with us, and you're going to post pics of 8' lush red banana plants, aren't you.
Mine are still in pots 7 gallon I think.

Oh, Tree, that ain't fair!! Yours look great!

I have four. Two in the ground, two in pots with lush soil. Not one is over 8" tall! And one of the ones in the ground is only about 4" tall. They have not grown a bit, and while they put out a new leaf now and then, they drop the ones underneath at the same time, so they never have more than two leaves at once. Maybe I'll try putting the pots in a shadier location, too.

Overall, I'm very disappointed in them. My red & green dwarf musa from the year before performed much, much better.

Oh my gosh, Treefrog! What did you do to get those Siam Rubies to grow so much and look so lush?!!!? Please tell us your secret. They look to be in full sun? Tell us, tell us! Mine are about a foot tall at best and look stunted. Not at all like my other bananas. BTW, lots of pretty plants in that pic. I feel like a banana failure.

Um, Treefrog has a secret ability to communicate with plants... He knows what they want.

His plants ALWAYS look at *least* twice as good as others the same age, and from the same batch/flat/cuttings/seedlings.

I think my plants look good, until I see his... Then I want to cry...

My Siam Rubies in 1 gallon pots are under 10". The nice 3 gallon one I got from Treefrog is 4' tall and lovely, in the ground. It has lots of pups and is lush. When I got it back from him it was already 3 times the size of the ones I kept.

Nanas like lots of food and water. Plus the Treefrog TLC.

But all of his plants look better than "normal" ones!

Of my 2, one looks kinda good, healthy leaves about a foot tall. The other-the one barb liked with the green/red leaves is really wimpy. I have mine in late afternoon sun with my other nanners. I give them plenty water, too.

TF I wish it was true that my bananas were fantastic. I think the spring really was rough on them windy and dry. I dug one up and saw some soily mealybugs so I treated those and put it back where it was. They get a lot of sun and some shade and is close to a sprinkler so it had a reasonable amt of water.
I'll take their picture tomorrow and you'll see what sad little pups (get it) they are.

OK you guys are freaking me out.
I want to plant them in the ground, but if they're going to die, I won't.
I didn't do anything special.
They're in pots that are still getting too small for the size of the plant already. Generic "Bushel Stop" potting soil with some Dynamite fertilizer. They do eat fertilizer. A little fish stuff, a sprinkle of palm stuff occasionally. They don't care.
As for communicating, I look at the plant, then the pot, and realize it needs more room. Especially something as fast growing as a banana. So I put 'em in a bigger pot. I should get these in the ground now. Need more room to grow.
I had one in full sun, one in afternoon shade and one in full shade. I moved them together for the photo and realized they were all the same. Surprised me.
Barb, I can only think that yours are planted in too fertile or too loose a potting soil and are drying out too quickly. and attracting the kind of compost eaters you described. Give 'em more fish emulsion (nitrogen) for a short while, may finish decomposing the compost? Work some native soil into the rootball?
Keep 'em watered thoroughly. We had a dry and windy spring here too. They suffered, along with the rest of my garden.

Now I'm afraid of what's gonna happen to them when I give them their permanent home.

Mine have been planted in my garden. They're not in pots. Maybe I should put the worst one in a pot to see if it improves.

I forgot to mention mine are in the ground and look like TF's. But then I got them from him so they had a good start. ;o) They are in a wet area and loving it. I do need to give them some fish emolsion now I guess.

Barb-good idea, I may try putting my wimpier one back into a pot for awhile to let it better establish some roots...will keep you posted!

Here's what they look like

At first mine were stunted due to the cold . And when It warmed up a little , I started feeding and
giving them lots of water...but I then realize they were getting too much sun. WAY too much
sun !

I then moved them under my oak tree and then they wern`t getting enough sun,

so I moved then under the drip line of the oak....and they are now happy and growing like weeds.
I think I have found their home.
I will be up potting them in 3 gallon pots........ ( hopefully ) can get them into the ground sometime in late July.

They are awfully pretty , arn`t they ? :)

Barb, I've seen pictures from you many times, all gorgeous.
So what's going on with these bananas?
Does the soil there stay too wet? Compacted, I doubt it.
Too dry? Too much sun?
Maybe fertilizer burn? Although it's hard to overfertilize bananas.
Besides the mealybugs, how were the roots when you dug one up?
No sign of rot or fungus?
Lots of questions, but no simple answer.
I'm sure you've thought of all this already.

I think I would dig at least one up, examine and clean all soil off the roots, trim all the dead leaves, and plant it in a 7 gallon pot of well draining potting mix. Keep it in the shade. And not fertilize until there's new growth, then lightly.

All you other folks who still have them in one gallon pots, shame on you!

Barb, my 'gooder' one looks like yours. Maybe it's a SW Florida thing!

I have one planted it's only about 18" tall. I dug the hole and put in Bushel Stop potting soil and planted that ruby...after it came out of the pot it started flopping over and I staked it. I'm going out now and show it the pics of TF's rubies. It gets full sun and water every two days in the morning.
