I agree with Karin in that if you do put something on a standard here, conjoining the beds would give more visual appeal and better flow (since you will see everything behind the tree as well). In that case, you would probably want to be consistent with the color of your mulch. Taking that even further, the sidebed could be a little wider - not necessarily as wide as the bump out, because I like the curve effect, but a larger planting area would look nice, along with plants with more height. So I second Karin's suggestion as well. My two concerns with a plant on a standard in this location: The downspout. I put my shrub at the corner of my garage more or less to mask the gutter/downspout which also juts out from my garage area. The shrub also "hides" my garbage can behind that - when you walk into my yard you see a shrub, not a garbage can. When you look at this area, what do you want people to see? Do you want to notice a gutter that juts out from your house, or do you want to see your beautiful landscaping? I personally think that plants on a standard look best flanking a walkway. That's what I really wanted to do in the front of my house, but we weren't able to since my house faces east with a huge maple towering overhead - just not enough sunlight. My second concern is the tree on the front of your property. Think of the visual effect of placing the plant on a standard just behind the tree. Too much of the same thing in the same area? Visually, I don't think it would have the impact you are looking for. A shrub, a tall evergreen tree (arborvitae), upright or even rounded boxwood would have more presence. I like to add color to shady areas, but any of these would work. There are a multitude of hostas you could plant at the base to add color and contrast - yellows, blues, variegated hostas...they all do great in the shade and I think would have more interest than ornamental grasses in a shady area. If you don't care for hostas, you could consider lamium beacon silver or brunnera jack frost - they both "pop" in the shade, pachysandra would work as a groundcover with height. There are many possibilities. Then, a row of say Annabelle Hydrangea alongside the garage with a Rhododendron or Azalea at the far end - this would be a beautiful view for passersby (and your neighbors).

On our side of the fence, I planted a short row of native bamboo which I love (I also love weeping willows and have planted those). I do not know if the bamboo will take hold or not--I would like to see a small "forest" eventually! Serenity and movement. This is a lovely room! In a small space continuity is important. Before you add or paint anything else, paint the daybed and both chairs a dark brown, British Colonial as mentioned above. This way you can add the color you want here and there. The table in front of the daybed needs to be higher, like a tea table height. Use the chest on the side. To make the daybed more comfy, add old fashioned wedge pillows across the back and then the big pillows on top.
