Back and playing catch up--seedlings

I was away for 10 days and now the grandkids are visiting so I'm way behind. Bloom had just started when I left and it has really ramped up. A few things are almost finished. Finally got a chance to take a few pics today and am taking advantage of a little down time to post. Starting with some seedlings that the landscapers didn't accidentally destroy while I was gone. They didn't notice 2 rows of second year seedlings that had a marker in front of them and sheared my best seedling from last year to the ground, but still they are more careful than most and I love the wall.

This one has 19 buds.

I like the green throat and pinching on this one. Have no idea of the parents though. It was one of the ones that had its label dragged away when I had trees taken down last fall.

None of these are fancy, but they all have pretty good branching and bud count.

These have increased well and don't sulk when moved. I think the flower form is good, but probably too plain.

I always enjoy seeing the seedlings. Just never know what you'll get. Your bud counts are great. I haven't counted buds yet on 2 year olds so perhaps I should start doing that.

Your wall? hmmm, do we get to see it?

Just to let you know, the photos above in thumbnails are from Rian's collection. He's some years ahead of me in this effort. Most of my babies (Mesembs, Aloes, Agave, Anacampseros, Avonia, Haworthia, Gasteria are not ready for sale yet, maybe next summer. I've also been propagating from leaves for a few years and have narrowed that down to the more select, less available plants. I've been preparing lots of those for local sale, just to get the ball rolling. Much of what I'm doing is practice and education, preparation for my future plans which I probably shouldn't discuss in this venue. The "Sea of Haworthia" is actually a shipment I received, planted very close together in a shallow tray. I did this only because I hadn't received my plastic pots yet. They plumped up a bit after planting but have only been that way for about 4 months. I'm sure they'll let me know when they want out! The M. crystallinum is one of my favorites.Those droplets are actually water cells that will break if touched. The flower buds have fat cells while the leaves have tiny ones. I got the seeds on Santa Cruz Island last Summer. They grew faster than any other Mesemb I planted. I'll post a link below to my thread from last summer about our island adventure. ~TJ, the chins are rodents. They are closer to a bunny or guinea pig. They have to be supervised at all times, when out of the cage. My hubby built them a nice big cage with a lot of shelves for them to climb on & they have a wheel for exercise. ~Kym, your first blooms will be so exciting! Can't wait to see your pix. !Kylie, I'm so glad you like the Crossandra. It's such a pretty orange,isn't it? My iochroma you sent is doing well now. I'm convinced, they are touchy when you change their conditions. All the buds and leaves fell off, but now is leafing out at the bottom. The iochroma I air-layered, looked terrible after I potted it up & brought it inside, now it looks great!You can see it in the pic above of my plant bench on the right hand side of the picture. ~Daniella, I did check the website out.I'm confused too. I'm pretty sure it is a Xmas Cactus not a Thanksgiving C. I read conflicting reports that both kinds are one in the same.Have to do a lot more research. ~Lenette, I am in love this year with the Xmas cactus. Such a bright color. Thanks! Ngraham - with rain, colors have been deeper and more vivid this year, especially after rain. We had nearly 2" of rain yesterday. So I grabbed the camera - you know bloom season is down and out when you grow 800 + daylilies and you only can find 16 to take pictures of (and some of those were duplicates.) At any rate, here were a few blooms this AM after heavy rain. First, the lovely LOLA BRANHAM, one of my favorites and a perfect example of the twisted cascade form. I have never seen the blooms look so "fat" or such a deep color before. Rain can sometimes have the effect of "fattening up" spiders and UFs. Anyone who can grow dormants and wants a LONG bloomer should look at STELLA'S RUFFLED FINGERS by my friend BJ Crichton. It starts EE and here has put up three sets of rebloom scapes. ( unheard of in this climate!) It is still blooming today and has lots of blooms left. This is a cute little one - great for front of border. Jane Trimmer's MICRO DOTS is another which has put up rebloom scapes. Great little one! HEARTBEAT OF HEAVEN is near the end of bloom, but the color today was darker ( and bloom was huge) after the rain. And a couple I just forgot to post last night. Here's one I can never seem to get a good picture of - Jack Carpenter's ESSENCE OF ROYALTY. And one by Reg.14 hybridizer Jesse George which has been a very reliable performer here. Phylis, As Chase said, this isn't the same pregnancy. Talking about unexpected surprises. I had my tubes tied and cut when I had the c-section with Hayden a year ago July. Then when he was 5 and half months old I found out I was 3 weeks pregnant. So yeah except for 5 months I have been pregnant 16 months. I am so excited about your surprise coming. I was nervous before Hayden came thinking we would be outnumbered by kids, but now with number 4 on the way it is evened up with me and 2 girls and DH and 2 boys. BTW when are you due, I am due in the middle of November and will have a c-section November 7th. Good to see you back, missed you. I was feelin bummed, last time Whiteorchid and I would compare pregnancy pics, and I didn't have any CF pregnant this time aroung, now you and I can be the prego CF members with all the cravings. (Even though I want fast food, and found out a week ago that I have gallstones and will have to have surgery 6 weeks after the baby is born, so no fast or greasy food for me for another 2 and half months) Stacie who is still pregnant lol

All of them have nice warm colors. I like 907 and 107 the best.

Thanks everyone. The last two have been around several years and I don't really know what to do with them. I don't think they are distinctive enough to register, but as garden plants they perform way better than lots of my registered daylilies. What do the rest of you who hybridize do with plants like this. I've composted plenty of prettier faces because they had low bud counts or were crowded and top budded. The first two flowers I posted are first ever blooms so I'm hoping they improve.

I'll post a picture of the wall when I get a chance.

I'm not this far yet (my first seedlings still haven't bloomed yet), but my advice would be to keep crossing them.

In other words, take your "really good but too plain" seedlings and cross them with "really pretty but not as good" plants of similar color families, in this case probably yellow/orange types. Those two seedlings appear to open very well and they have very handsome ruffling.

Do you have a specific goal in your breeding, or is it more just for fun?

Nate, For the most part I'm doing this for fun, but I'm most interested in good garden plants. I want good bud count, plants that open well and have good form,and don't sulk for a couple of years when they're divided. The last 2 seedlings have those characteristics. I'd like to add repeat bloom and stunning faces to them and now I'm starting to concentrate on late bloomers.
