Where to get Red Lady Papaya
Comments (2)It is too late for your zone to start papayas unless you protect them from the cold in a pot and plant them next spring. Sometimes Lowes carry the Red Lady papaya as a plant. I get my seeds from this source. Silvia Here is a link that might be useful: red lady papaya...See MoreRed Lady Papaya Flowers
Comments (9)Alys, I live in Tampa and this is my Red Lady papaya today, which I purchased this year from Wal-mart. It is 8 or 9 ft tall now. I dug a big hole and added top soil, fertilizer and water absorber crystals. I watered it daily until the rains started and then only as needed. It has grown like gang busters!! Maybe you planted later than I did? I planted around April? Or maybe did not fertilize or water as much? I posted earlier threads panicked that I would not get Papayas. Three months ago the flowers came and fell off. Then about 2 months ago it started producing flowers that did turn to fruit. I failed to head the warnings on here and one day saw that ALL of my fruit had one or two tiny little scabs - that when touched would fall off and streams of white fluid ran out. Dang ! The fly (it looks like a wasp that is 1/2 inch long) was seen and it got my fruit. NOW I have covered all of my fruit with either bags or knee-hi nylons folded back and forth as a trial. But the fruit is already damaged. Except for maybe the two biggest ones. I did not have the heart to pull the big ones off - hoping they can be saved since they were gotten late in development. But the small ones I am now pulling off. It is so frustrating because i just pulled one off only 1 1/2 inches long and it was already bitten!!!! I am afraid to bag too soon before they are pollinated. Is this correct? Or should I bag immediately and hope one of the other two flowers will do the work? I only have one tree and none around it. I am very careful when I do pull fruit off to bring it in the house and bag it so that more flys do not develop from the larva in the fruit I pulled. Wish I could bag it soon enough!!!!!...See MoreRed Lady Papaya
Comments (2)Just bought one. Thanks for the tip. I'm not a huge fan of them but my grandaddy was, so it is more of plant to remind me of him. They are not bad with a little salt....See MoreRed Lady papaya photos
Comments (61)Jane, where exactly are you located ? Although don't think that matters much, the flies are everywhere. However, this year their numbers hereabouts were minimal,..so minimal, my glass jars collected only about two dozen each. Started out in '09 with the tall, skinny papaya plants, then 2 yrs later, switched to the Red Lady's, then dropped them all together till this last year, when, just for the hell of it, went back to 5 of the tall guys. Wish I had a photo or two of a hanging vinegar jar, however, am sure you can easily visualize the scene. Fruit flies hereabouts come around in July, like clockwork. So I overlap a bit, hang the jars in early/mid June, this yr took 'em down in early Aug. What happens is, the flies go " bananas " when they whiff the strong, pungent scent of the cider. So they crawl into the smallish holes in the metal cap to " get at that wonderful liquid ", soon realizing they can't get out, then fall into the cider and drown. I've seen bottles in August with a huge soggy black mass of what seems like hundreds in ea jar. If it rains heavily, most jars will get diluted, so just monitor them and refresh w/more apple cider vinegar, screw cap back on & re-hang. To be 100 % honest, once every two years or so I will find one, or at the most, two mango's destroyed by the fruit flies, but as long as I watch the jars once in awhile, and refill the ones that rarely need it, my fruit fly problems, - once fierce, are now over ! When in use I have two on each of my two largest trees, the 15' tall Glenn. and the 14' tall Kent. the two teenagers ( Tebow & Carrie ) only get one ea ! Still, a lot less work than the paper bags,...a lot less ! ( smile ) I admire your patience and work ethic, but hopefulhly those days are over. Good luck !...See Morewhgille
