Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

I've been doing research online (after having my curiosity piqued here) about using DE (diatomacious earth) for pest control.

I remember that someone said you use it for fleas... do you apply on your critters, feed it to your critters or use it around your critters?

Does anyone know if it works against snails and slugs?

And, will it hurt the lizards and birds who eat my bugs?

I don't like using pesticides, but sometimes you've just gotta do something! And the snails LOVE chewing rings around the stems of my plants, killing everything! When I found a 6" long by 2" wide SLUG on my walk (I actually saw the thing from the livingroom, down the hall from the front door), I was about ready to pack up and head back up to Canada. Slugs freak me out.

I've used the snail bait with limited effect. The decimation is definitely lower, but I always question using a bait as it attracts the critters, so when it is used up, what do the critters it attracted eat? My Vinca, I think-a!
