I have mine in various places since I have so many lol. I think they look the prettiest,though, when they are incorporated into beds that have other plants in them (ie: the layered look). Just think about thier needs and what kind of soil you have when you are planting other things with them and then experiment a little lol.

Brugs like water, sun, lots of fertilizer and well drained soil so other plants that like the same things will do well with them. Brugs can get tall and shade other plants that are near them so keep that in mind as well. Last year I put them with things like Hawiian Ti plant, ee's, caladiums, sweet potato vines and shrimp plants.

To further the layered look you can add vines to climb up the brugs. I use Moonvines and Morning Glories. Even though they supposedly don't need as much water or fert as brugs they did very well and the Moonvines add a nice touch to a moon garden and are open when brugmansia blossoms are releasing thier fragrance. You can also grow them on tall trellises behind or beside the brugs for a backdrop. Use MG colors that complement the color of the brug flowers.
My soil is very well draining so I can get away with some plants added to the brug beds that may not like as much water as the brugs. This year I am adding other stuff as well like purple heart, stromanthe, cleome (since it is tall to plant between the brugs),salvias, and low growing gingers.
The good thing about brugs is that they are very forgiving so if you don't like the look you can dig them up and move them.

Wow...Sultry!! Great pictures, but your advice is the best! Great question, lellie...Hope you do well with your bruggie, but...I have to tell you...they are VERY addicting! (I'm up to ten...it's bad!) Last summer I had them all in pots (all were from cuttings) and I had to keep dragging them around to cut the grass and also, they want LOTS of water. Fortunately, we had an area that has a 'flip on the pump' sprinkler system...we tucked all the bruggies in that area and now it's set for water every other day. Only thing is that it's not super close to the patio...I miss the fragrance in the evenings... That's a great idea to add morning glory or moonflowers, because there are times that the brugs are not in bloom...they really need some other 'supporting actors and actresses'...

I have a spot that will be re-vamped within the next couple of days. I've already begun pulling out the very old scheffeleras...ugh!
The area gets morning dappled sun and afternoon shade...would you think that would be enough sun for the brugs to bloom?

I have found that mine like to be tucked away & shielded for strong winds. Dappled light with good moisture. And yes they are addicting! What I love about them is that they bloom & bloom & the smell!

As a note of advice :
Brugmansia blooms hang downward like trumpets from heaven - thus the name Angel's Trumpet .
Datura blooms point upward as if from he** - they are named Devil's Horns .
I have the common double purple Datura and it is gorgeous . Happy as can be with all this rain . These plants can be a nice complement plant for the Brugs .

Gatormom, do you plant your dats near the brugs? I seem to recall reading that they shouldn't be planted near each other??? (however, I have to say that dats have volunteered in some pretty strange places this year..and I have to wait for a bloom to tell who they are!).

I was told not to plant red Amaryllis with other colors as they would eventually turn to a blended all one color . Turns out this is not true at all .

Yes, I agree they are very addicting lol. Those photos are from last fall when the beds were less than a year old. I am trying to put more stuff in them now that we have lived in this house longer.
I think what people mean by not planting the datura and brugmansia together is that since they are closely related to each other, they get the same pests and diseases. Tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers are also related and can pass the same diseases etc.

I haven't had too much trouble with the datura giving the brugs diseases here. I have trouble growing datura in my yard here period because something eats them all the way to the ground everytime I plant them out lol. They especially love the lilac le fleur datura and eat them all immediately over the doubles or any other kind grrr.

This last one is a cutting I took from the tree in the top pics - not even a year ago. I have 20 of these potted up
and was going to ask you guys how to make them bloom. Then I planted this baby in my Pastor's yard when I
landscaped it last month - and just saw it blooming today!

Now to start collecting cuttings of different colors!

I love the brugs and dats too! And, I had the very same thing happen to my double purple dat just a few days ago. It was looking fantastic one day, then the next it was totally half-eaten! I was crushed! The following day, it was not longer half-eaten, it was three-quarters eaten! WHAT??? I couldn't imagine that it would have been a bug--would've had to be a mutant bug from Mars. The only thing I can guess is maybe ducks? I have a momma and a bunch of babies that hang around there every day--they seemed the likely culprits! Anyone ever heard of ducks eating these?

just this week I've had three datura go toast...eaten...the culprit looks like a very, very small slug type thing...they had pretty much gone to seed, so I wasn't overly upset, but still... yuk slug-bugs. BTW...does anyone want seeds? I think I have black currant swirl datura and la fleur datura...hopefully triple yellow soon, but those seeds are not yet ripe. Angel trumpets are going to be awesome in another night or two...ALL were brown stumps at freeze in February....now every single one (11 of them) have buds galore. *color me very (Happy)*

I'm having trouble getting mine to grow. I ordered a live plant about 12in tall in May it was growing very well inside so in the beginning of July I transplanted it outside in a spot that gets shade in the morning but full sun from around noon until sunset. At first I was Worried it was going to die as some of the lowest leaves turned yellow. With some extra watering and a little miracle grow things turned around. However it really hasn't gotten much bigger. There are a few new leaves at the top but the plant can't be more than 18inches and show no signs of flowering. Something is also eating the leaves!! I have never had trouble growing plants before but this year it's all I've had!

Can anyone tell me what might be eating the plant and how to make it stop? Should I just leave it alone, hope it blooms and comes back next year? Should I dig it up and re-pot it keeping it inside and try planting outside again next year?
