It should root easily from hardwood cuttings in dirt,maybe use some root hormone,also,though I never do.Keep out of sun until rooted and don't let the soil dry out completely.Hope this helps.

Cindy, thank you so much. I just followed your directions and have it planted. Do you have any idea how long until I can tell if it is rooted and will see new growth?

Give it a few weeks or so,gently tug on it,if it gives resistance,it's probably starting to root.Then you'll have a free plant from a cutting!

You've got good information here, just wanted to let you know that I've rooted cuttings from ours several times and each time it looked like the cutting would die for certain, the leaves dried up and browned and fell off and generally it looked like a lost cause. Eventually new growth did sprout and once those first few baby leaves sprout, it usually takes right off.

I've had success with and without rooting hormone. In our area it is literally as simply as taking a cutting and sticking it in the ground. Since I have a very mature "tree" when I do my spring pruning I simply stick a half dozen or so of the meatier cuttings into the ground right near the tree itself and watch and wait. Once the new growth starts I'll let a few big leaves form then transplant.

I suppose if you took greater care, potted the cuttings and watched the watering better you'd have a greater success rate although my careless and inattentive approach has yielded good succes too. Good luck !

I agree with the above post. My friend gave me two long limbs from her Jatropha tree and told me to just stick them in the ground and keep them watered. I did, and they both took. In fact, one got hit hard by the freeze, but is coming up all around the bottom. I'll choose one main leader, then root all the rest as soon as they are bigger.
