Need opinions on my upcoming order

I've been lurking here for about two months - ever since I bought my first few daylilies. We're in new construction, so I have an empty canvas and I must admit that I have fallen completely into your daylily obsession.

So far, all I have are a Stella and Black-Eyed Stella up by the house, planted with a Startle that apparently is not going to bloom for me this year. Back by the pond, I have some orange ditch lilies from my aunt and a Rocket City I stumbled over last weekend. My plan for the pond area is to plant clumps of color, so I guess I've started with orange and will probably switch to purple next year.

But back to the immediate question. We're having a patio put in next week, and I want to plant daylilies around it. I have one area that I want to do in all daylilies with a maroon/black-purple and cream/white color scheme. Here's what I'm considering, and I'd like your opinions on which to go with:

Strutter's Ball

Samurai Warrior

Caribbean David Elkins

Friar's Lantern

The other area that I want to put daylilies into will be a perennial/daylily/annual mix. For perennials, I'm definitely planning Blue Speedwell so I thought a mix of pink and purple daylilies would be nice. I tried to pick pretty short daylilies since they'll be in a pretty narrow border around the patio. What are your thoughts on these DLs?

BROADWAY BOLD EYES, STRUTTERS BALL and FRIARS LANTERN do well for me here in KY. I never cared much for JOAN SENIOR's performance and sent all of it to a new home last year. STRUTTERS BALL reblooms regularly for me.

Of your other plants MAE GRAHAM and INDIAN GIVER are both very nice plants and both give me KY rebloom.

Just wondering if you know that most "pink" daylilies are really a peach-toned flower. The first daylilies I bought were described as pinks (weren't in bloom) that to my complete dismay were an ugly (IMHO) muddy terra-cotta color that I really disliked. If you are able to visit a local daylily farm, you will get a realistic view of the flowers and how the colors really are in real life. Photos on the web & in catalogs and descriptions can be extremely misleading.

Well, I decided to fill the wash tub (3' diameter, beer and ice kind) with a mix of my compost and peat moss, unwrapped all of the plants, and "heeled" them in for the time being. Also, mulched them with straw, after watering them in. I stuck the wash tub in the same southwest corner of the back yard protected by my shed on one side, fence on the other, oakleaf hydrangea on the other, where it stays pretty protected from wind and cold. Such nice plants, too. They all look great, the arisaema nepanthoides is getting ready to flower; the podophyllum (may apple) has gorgeous thick waxy honey green leaves; also got my disporum 'Night Heron', mahonia gracilipes, verbascum 'Caribbean Crush', phlomis fruticosa, epimedium wushanense hybrid, astilboides tabularis, rodgersia, and a couple others I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm really excited about growing these. OKC - the tetrapanax I mentioned I could've sworn you said you had in your garden - rice paper plant? Does that ring a bell? Also, don't you have the variegated petasites, too? Mine is just gorgeous this year! Finally, after about 4 years, it is looking so fine! Susan

OK, your replies are just what I needed to hear to get me more focused... and browsing the FKB and everywhere else I could google a picture. Kelleg, I am attracted to clean lines.... and this has been creeping up on me over the past year or so. We have so much stuff. Old stuff. Antiques, etc. I want a space that is fresh. Although the cabinets are shaker they are a modern shaker...so I can pull it off, I think. The black sink will be history... I'm drooling over the Orca...but not worried about that decision yet. I'm thinking about Labrador Antique or Blue Eyes for the tops...and I really liked RemodelFla's idea of a limestone look porcelain tile, or maybe even grey. How about that? Igloochick...been thinking about your story all weekend...hoping things will work out for you. Off topic, but, Yandi...Jasmine is my bestest girl. She will be 14 in June...we lost her brother (ache, ache) a year ago in January. We also have a Scotty and a cat...so are thinking we wanted hardwood, but will probably do tile...we had it in our last home and loved it. It looked sort of like mud :) I wonder if Labrador Antique and Blue Eyes are considered the same price point? Gotta get up for work tomorrow...so I'd better quit obsessing and get some sleep! Yes, we are thrilled with how it turned out. The white door isn't quite so bright in real life, I think the flash made it pop a bit more than it really does. We replace the big fat hinges on the door on the right (the heat/air unit) with piano hinges for a more low-profile look and painted them, and two vent covers the same silver-gray as our Aspire wall plates. We flipped the pantry door (door on left which used to be a clothes closet) so that it now opens on the kitchen side and used matching pulls for both doors instead of door knobs. Much nicer look. Kayl - There is no wrong answer to this question, but I will share what I am thinking. When I see them all side by side, the uba tuba goes to the bottom of my list because it seems so gold against the others and the dark on goes to the top because it stands out in contrast to the others. But - I don't think you should pick out in contrast to each other but in terms of what each one plays with the rest of the kitchen. I think you can make the best judgment when you look at each independently. So while covering each up and looking at them one at a time, I am focusing on the Labrador green because on my monitor it has a gray undertone that looks lovely with the floors (which I know you were concerned about.) The Uba reads gold and the dark one makes the grout of the floor stand out to me, not the tile itself. So (1) Labrador (2) Uba (3) Dark Labrador - but honestly I think they would all work. Because of these subtle difference try to bring your cabinet and a sample of your tile (or a paint chip that matches your tile), and a paint chip of your walls to the fabricator to pick out your actual slab to be sure you are getting what you are looking for (or maybe even something better than the samples.)
