What to take part 2 - gingers

I have the following members of the ginger family, and I would like to know which ones I can bring to Moultrie with me.

Red Pine Cone Ginger

Globbas (Dancing ladies)

Peacock Ginger (Resurrection lily)

Heliconia Rostrata (Oh please! I really want to keep this one!)

Butterfly Ginger (I actually know this one can come)

Costus Barbatus

I guess I could grow some in pots, but I'm trying to only bring hardy stuff that doesn't have to be hauled in and out.

Im in a neighboring county to Moultrie..Not sure why you are settling there instead of nearby Tifton or albany.. vbg..but..I can say for sure that the Red Pine Cone Ginger will do VERY well here.
Probably most all of them will do well with good mulch on the south side of a house..and pine straw is plentiful..works great..most gingers grow like weeds in this part of Ga..You do know that cannas, glads, and amaryllis live in the ground yr rd here too..right?
Good luck with your move..Seriously..Moultrie is growing..in the past yr have added a Home Depot and Lowes side by side..hard to believe for a town that small..

I'm not so sure about Moultrie anymore. I was looking at land prices, and they've gone up just in the last month. The Bainbridge area is still much cheaper, and I want to get as much as I can for my money.

I was going to Moultrie because it was farm country. I don't know where I'll land, but I know I'll be happy there.

Thanks for the info. I have missed pine straw! We can't use it down here because of creepy crawlies who love to live in it. Besides which, you can't find it. It's the best mulch ever.

Wow! Things look fabulous there. I really like the engraved rock in the Welcome Garden. ThereÂs a couple of people in the neighbourhood here that have something similar (but on a smaller, suburban scale :-) I would like to do something like that but IÂd like it to be on the lawn in front of the main bed. That would make mowing difficult though so we probably wonÂt do it. IÂll just have to admire the effect in other peopleÂs gardensÂ. I see you have a brick edging too. It looks a lot neater than mine! A question for you Â does your brick edge have a barrier between the bricks and the grass? I have used a metal edge and IÂm worried that, in a few places, I didnÂt leave it high enough above the grass roots to prevent them from crossing it. Have you had problems with grass crossing over Â or under Â the bricks? Henryi is the clematis I planted under the wisteria in the summer, hoping to train it into the wisteria to extend the bloom season. So far, the two Henryis are doing well. IÂm happy to hear that it does a late bloom. That would be a nice timing to add interest to the wisteria if it all succeeds. Anything else I should know about Henryi? Your potting shed is definitely by far the nicest garden shed IÂve ever seen!

Zabby, jams and jellies that don't set or don't quite make it as jams or jellies get recycled into glazes for just about anything (pork roasts, turkey legs, tarts, or warmed as ice cream topping). They can also be swirled into batters for quick breads and coffee cakes. I went through some of my canned goods this weekend and chucked out some pickles from 2001! DH and I aren't huge pickle eaters. A batch or bread and butters and a batch of dills will last us a year. If I get a bumper crop of cukes or zukes, I wind up with way too many pickles. This weekend I made 8 half-pints of green tomato salsa, 8 pints of tomato basil sauce, 7 half-pints of grape jam and 7 pints of green tomato pickle relish. I thought we were going to get a frost the middle of last week so I picked a lot of green tomatoes. We never did get the frost! Still I suppose it's time for me to start cleaning out the garden.

Me too -- HUGE smile! Your challahs are so gorgeous, loves2! Wow -- I am going to aim for yours next week. We only do a four-strand braid; I'm going to have to look up how to do a six-strand because yours are so beautiful! (ours only used three cups of flour but is long and skinny because for the strands I left Challah ben Challah up to his own devices) I wonder if our challah is wiggly because of my youngest on my back ... or maybe it's because we like reptiles! It's really because a four year-old helped me OOPS! I mean I helped my four year-old transfer it onto the cookie sheet. (just a standard cookie sheet, but on the diagonal) Your husband has some good eyes! Yes, those ovens are Gaggenau but they're 30" wide (their new models). They're not steam ovens. I really, really like them. I hated paying for them! But I really like them. I LOVE the side-opening door. I LOVE how quickly they heat and how quickly (and quietly) they cool down. I love how cool the doors stay. I love how when the oven is on, the interior light is on the whole time -- no fiddling with the "light on" "light off" button. I love how large the glass is (how big the viewing area). But, I think the convection is just so-so -- areas cook faster than others and I still have to turn the cookie sheets. And I think it's crap that these expensive ovens don't come with full-extension gliding racks (or whatever they're called) like other much less expensive ovens do (Electrolux comes to mind). Yes, I am Tacky McTacky to keep bringing up the cost but I can't help it -- other than our cabinetry, they were the most expensive thing in our kitchen. And I had to think long and hard (and on and on -- my husband is part-saint to have brooked my hand-wringing) about getting them. But, whenever we talk about our kitchen one of our absolute favorite things is those side-opening ovens. So, I guess that's what we paid for! How do you like your ovens? (Miele, right?) I am so sorry if I am getting you confused with someone else, but I think I recall when your kitchen was being installed your wondering if you'd made the right choice for your oven. ??? That's not quite it, but I can't get the specifics straight. I want to tell you, your posts about your kitchen really influenced my planning. You were the first person I read who talked about zones and how it would impact you with your children (I mean impact in a good way). My kiddos are so little so I didn't know enough to envision what it might be like with older children (and hopefully more of them!). I took your experiences to heart, I really did. The Georgia Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin (www.agr.georgia.gov) published their Fall Farmland Edition on Sept. 14.

Land in Colquitt County included 45 acres at $4500/acre and 80 acres at $3400/acre. There was an offer in Grady County for 18 acres for $85,000. The price per acre goes down as the number of acres go up, such as 400 acres in Miller County for $3000 per acre.

Look carefully at tax rates and services as well as land price in different counties. There's a small plot near us that sold and the new owner discovered that getting electricity run to it was going to cost as much as the lot. You will have only dial-up, away from town, and garbage service is dear.

I hope you find just what you wish for.

I only have dialup now, and I lived in the middle of nowhere for 6 years, where you either burned your garbage, or toted it 12 miles to the pickup dumpsters. I loved it. I'm not a city girl. I'm just stuck in the city right now. Can't wait to get back to the boonies! I would never buy where I can't get power. In fact, I'm looking for something with a trailer already on it, where I can build a small cottage in a couple of years.

I doubt I'll be buying anything more than 5 acres. I wouldn't know what to do with 45 acres! LOL

There are two corner lots for sale in Iron City, GA for $14,000 and possible owner financing. Noticed that in today's paper. Iron City is about as rural as you can be without being outside a town, yet it's right on the four lane between two larger towns. Or, there's a double lot on Lake Seminole for $59,000.
