I have Kwanso in my vegetable garden. Its folage is healthier looking than my other daylilies and it has crowded out the weeds and bermuda grass. There is a place for tall, bright colored plants that can take care of themselves. I wouldn't put it with pink ruffly darlings that need TLC.

Kwanso was very invasive in my flower bed - which had the dirt all loosened up & amended to be quite rich.
But when we moved it to a field behind our house (all along a fence row by itself) it has been well-behaved. We didn't do a thing to the soil; just took a shovel & opened a hole & tossed the roots in. Never watered it & it's lived thru 2 years of extreme drought. I believe it would grow on the moon! If orange was a very difficult color to obtain in the daylily world - like blue - it would probably cost a $100 !

Lucky you to find all those daylilies for free. Looks like you got a good variety.

Thanks for the replies, I know Kwanso probably doesn't draw much interest buy it's my first (and the first I've seen personally). It's pretty. Familiar, yet unique. Only two or 3 fans but there may be more in the plants yet to bloom and I wouldn't be disappointed at all. The first bloom was a disfigured mess that was definitely a triple. Have to see what the next few days bring to be sure.

Still very curious about the last pic, the yellow with maroon trim. Any ideas would be very much appreciated! I stuck the plastic variety tags in with the plants but it's been a good ten years ago. It was an awesome display flanked by Stella's on an old 2 post section of farm fence. The posts rotted and flowers overcrowded as I'd planned a nice show from day 1.

I'll be keeping track of this Kwanso and it's progress after I move it from the folk's place to mine. I think mixing it with standard ditchlilies should prove interesting?

Those are really beautiful flowers. I really like the 2 pink ones they are lovely. I like the kwanso also. A friend gave me 8 to 10 plants of the kwanso her neighbor wanted to be rid of, and I was so excited! Now I'm almost afraid to plant them, LOL I will find a special place for them.

Found two more clumps of Kwanso today! I'm going to have to do so more searches as I'm seeing triples today? I'm liking these very much and they're going to be stuck in the middle of their native cousins, if they take over no worries at all!

A few more of the "mystery plants" bloomed today aside from the Kwansos. One's a little pinkish-peach double. Normally not my thing but it's a no frills type as opposed to what I'd call the "girly" varieties. (no offense to those who love the frilly varieties, I see all your pictures and they are pretty flowers but I'd only plant them myself if I had a wife or girlfriend that demanded we have them, lol). I've tried to get a good picture of this one but so far my timing/light/angles or old camera just don't come through. Another larger pale frilly flower appeared, it's a litle on the bland side but Mom likes it so it stays in her landscape! One really caught my eye from a distance, from a tiny clump but a beautiful red that looks something like like Red Volunteer?

What a great score! And more blooms to come! Think I'll drive by the donor's house to see what varieties she kept for her front bed. Perhaps my next visit to the daylily farm down by my house I'll find something special to return this big favor? I think it's the least I could do. I'll let Mom keep the bulk of these but this new red and the Kwanso's are all mine! The purple and gold posted above will go to a client who wanted flowers in our local high school colors. Did it with irises, now we'll do it with daylilies!

Expecting to see one if not two new clumps bloom Sunday morning, hoping for some more new variety and perhaps get some shots of the ones that were too sunny to really capture properly. Mowing, shrub trimming and some veggie garden work to finish here but I'll bring back more bloom pics from my place, my giant clump of Chicago Apache should be diagnostic of it's potential and there will be some new purchases from a local grower. 350+ to choose from, I never walk away with a full wallet, LOL.

If you don't mind me asking.... What part of Ohio are you from? You mention a local grower with 350+ varieties. Just wondering if this place is open to the public and if it is any where near me in South Central Ohio.

A1 Day lilies in Bainbridge, OH start their open garden sales July 15th and it runs thru July 31st. Their web site is www.A1daylilies.com. I can't wait till Tuesday. This will be my first visit to a day lily farm and would like to find some more to go visit.

Oh and is the sign still up at your donor's house? I may have to get directions. LOL. You got some beautiful freebies.

Andrea, I'm living between the Lancaster area and Chillicothe. The donor's site got cleaned out, she had about 4-5 rows and it was all before bloom. As for the lady I mentioned witht the 350+, it's somewhat a hobby but she puits out a sign and sells pretty nice size clumps at a very reasonable prce (seems to be based on availability/rarity...but consider my Spiderman costs $50 less than a popular online vendor...)

If I'm not mistaken, Bainbridge is on the west side of Chillicothe off route 50? Judy's little farm is about the same distance in the on the other side of Chillicothe off route 50. She's located a few miles above Tar Hollow State Park on state route 327 (can't miss the park signs on route 50) I don't have her phone number but she has a small, but noticable hand painted sign she hangs during the bloom . She's retired but does quite a bit of church work and is closed on sundays.

I'm heading that way tonite to catch up on yardwork at home once I finish up here at the folk's place...Seems a never ending routine but if you'd like shoot me an e-mail at runningfree_1965@XXyahoo.com (remove the XX) and I'll try to get you some contact #'s to insure you don't make a wasted trip. Thanks for the link, I'll have to look into it. Planning to visit a relative in Hillsboro and sneak in some fishing at Rocky fork or Salt Creek lake and I'm all but positive Bainbridge would be on my path!

Had a few more new visitors today but just got home a little while agao and the sunlight made pics difficult: The 3rd one is a neat peach-colored spidery thing, yet another that's going to my house!

Thank you so much for the information. I have had some NOID Day lilies for years but the addiction has really hit this year since I found this site. Everyone here are such enablers.

The 350+ daylilies are practically in my back yard. I'm 20 min. East of Chillicothe in Vinton County bordering the Tar Hollow State Forest.

The DH is worried about the bank account now that I have that many daylilies so close. :) Now I know I'm going to have to get a second job.

Yes A1 daylilies is West of Chillicothe off of St Rt 50. Not sure how big it is as this will be my first visit. But can't wait to see what they have.

I've been moving plants and getting rid of plants for 2 months in preparation for my visit to A1. Guess I'll have to do some more thinning or make some new beds now that I have a place that close to me.

The A1 website looks interesting too, guess I'll need to bring a little extra cash. (Luckily I have a spot behind my garage where I can stuff plants until the new beds are cut and prepped!)
