I've been anxiously awaiting the ffo on this one, and it finally bloomed.

Since the daylilies are winding down, I've planted pentas and lantana on the edges of some of the beds. The butterflies seem to like them.

I couldn't find any decent potting medium locally either. So I ordered an 8qt bag of medium fir bark. That's 1/2". I also ordered some spagnum moss. I picked up some red lava rock that's 3/4" size. Others like different rock to use. From these 3 ingredients I make up my own mixes. Oncidiums like to never dry out. So I use 50 % fir bark, 30% rock and 20% spagnum moss. Water as they just approach dryness, about 5 days this time of year. My preference for pots is plastic over clay. I don't care for the roots sticking to the clay pots. I also prefer clear slotted pots. You can see how the root system is doing. I have a white Twincle, Sherry Baby and a few others. I joined the St Louis Orchid Society and they not only give good info at the monthly meetings but the raffle off free door prizes for the members. I started out with 1 orchid in November 2012 and I'm now up to about 25. I've only bought 5 of my present orchids. I would have had 35 if the learning curve hadn't been so steep. Good Luck.

Nancy- That looks like a good list of reblooms but then I guess it depends on how many daylilies you have total. Kay- Your list of reblooms is UNBELIEVABLE! Just wow, wow and more wow. I think all that fussing you do over them paid off big time. As to rebloomers here, that requires some thought. I never made a list from years past, I just know some rebloom and then there are the ones that will rebloom one year out of the blue and never again. I know my Norris intros, NO BLUE OXFORDS and CLARITY OF VISION double scape, last year they triple scaped. Also I get instant rebloom on DOC WEBSTER (this year too). But my top two rebloomers from Don Herr that always rebloom each year so far don't have rebloom scapes. Those are CONSIDER YOURSELF and ON LINE. Lots of Emerriches rebloom but I haven't had lots of them long enough to know how consistant it is going to be. Plus here if it is instant rebloom it should be showing up but if regular rebloom were the scapes bloom out first it is still too early. I mean I do have the always rebloomers like FOREVER STELLA and STELLAS RUFFLED FINGERS. Otherwise, we will see.

We have had some rain and thunder (perhaps more thunder than rain) and it is a lovely 64 degrees with no rain falling here right now. We're headed for a high around 70, so even if no more rain fell at all, it is going to be a really nice day. Our forecast gives us a 100% chance of rain today and a 30% chance tonight, so I'm hopeful. We've been in drought for so many months that it is getting ridiculous, but if we could get 1 or 2 of those big rainfall days like Larry gets, we might finally make it out of drought. That's a really big 'if' though. The storms look good on the radar, but they are patchy and we're apparently in a dry slot right now. Autumn rain that falls between Sept and Nov is our best chance for making it out of drought, so I'm hoping for lots of rain. I was in my back garden killing squash bugs yesterday and, despite having decent rain the last couple of weeks, there's new cracks in the sandy soil back there. By new, I mean they just appeared yesterday......it aggravates me that an area that receives irrigation and that has received probably 13-15" of rain since the beginning of June still is cracking. The grass greened up a little and we have helenium, liatris and goldenrod blooming in the fields, so it looks kinda nice out there right now...if you just ignore the cracks in the ground.

Nancy - I think the color is darker because of the recent rains and the cooler nights. Most of the Internet photos show it a lighter lavender. But didn't your NOID have white midribs? Heartbeat of Heaven here does not have the midribs. It opened perfectly and seems to be an EMO. There is a reason mine is blooming so much later than yours. I never got it planted last fall. It sat bareroot in a bucket all winter, and I decided to plant it in late April after it showed a bit of green fan. Anika - Glad someone picked up on the Prince vibe! Mantis - Sorry to hear you have opening problems with Heartbeat of Heaven. I'm quite smitten with it, and put its pollen on every pink, lavender and purple open today. That accordian edge is swoon worthy. I hope yours straightens up soon. Jean - Yes, my camera captures most colors pretty accurately, unless you're viewing the pics on an IPAD, and that device adds reds to the purples and over saturates the green. Debra

Great rebloom. Lots of buterflies here too because the Butterfly bushes are blooming and so are the Zinnias, another of their favorites. I also have the Tropical Milkweed for the Monarchs.

That's a whole lot of wonderful. My favorites are Ethereal Light and Heaven's Declaring. No butterflies here. lots of humming birds. We have to work to keep the cats from eating them.

I love Heaven's Declaring - it was worth waiting for! Also especially like Ricter and Jitterbug Blues, plus the gorgeous swallowtail!

Michelle- I got Heaven's Declaring on the Lily Auction. Keep looking for it there. I tried to order it from Daylily World when it was first introduced, but Mort and David were moving that year and my order got lost in the shuffle. I think it's just as pretty in person as the hybridizer's photo.

I will definately keep my eyes out for that one. I almost got Hill Street Blues when it was listed, but found it somewhere else... It is just beautiful. Really unique in the way the eye pattern is layed on with very distinct lines. Love it.

I can see why you were anxiously awaiting seeing the first bloom on Heaven's Declaring! It is a stunner... but if you are anything like me, you spend a lot of time waiting and crossing your fingers that your blooms are at least something similar to the pics that made you order it in the first place! No disapointments on that one I'm sure!

I also like Jitterbug Blues, and the butterfly... and heck, I like them all.

Rita - I have three butterfly bushes that attract lots of butterflies and moths. I don't have any zinnias this year. I got too busy with the daylily beds to plant the zinnia seeds.

Chris - I got Heaven's Declaring last fall. I don't know why it took so long to scape and bloom. It's supposed to an extra early bloomer - not a late.

Oh yes...what a beauty HD is....sure was worth waiting for, I can see. Your photos and dl's are gorgeous...love the butterfly...I've been making some photos of them too. I frequent the Butterfly Forum some...it's a nice place to hang out when I'm not on this forum looking at everyone's gorgeous bloom photos. :)

Debra- I have five Butterfly Bushes, no actually six because one got divided when it had to be dug up for the terraces garden do last fall. The zinnias I did from seeds are just starting to bloom now but I had cheated this spring (so very busy this year) and bought a flat of zinnias which started blooming a long time ago.

I got my HD last fall and it bloomed late this year. It was planted close to the house for winter protection. The flower is pretty cool......glad it survived,

The wait for Heaven's Declaring was well worth it, IMHO. I like the second sidewards view the best.

Linda - That's interesting that your HD bloomed late too. It may be one that takes a long time to get over being divided.

By the way everybody, the bloom came through yesterday's 95-degree temps and a thundertorm just great. So it's sunfast and rainfast. Mort Morss did himself proud on this one.
