new to forum, in tampa bay area

hi,

i've referred to this site off and on to try and figure out how to manage my new veggie plot. i grew up in FL but moved away for about 15yrs. now i live back in my hometown again, and have been recently playing with landscaping-- it's highly addictive! i had done a bunch of gardening in virginia under very different conditions. in the last 2 months i have become a junior entomologist thanks to the veggies being attacked by almost everything :S

anyway, up to now, thanks for the peek at all the wonderful ideas & advice, and i hope i can contribute something [a ton of questions, at the very least!]

I buy stuff online as I suppose everyone does, mostly for better prices. But what we lose shopping online is that friendly personal touch and that is what I have always gotten at places like Adam's Nursery and Jeff's Koi House. Sometimes the better price isn't always the better deal. I guess if we don't want to see more of our local businesses like Adam's close, we need to make sure to support them by shopping locally. Just a thought. Perhaps, those of us who communicate via this forum can share with the rest which are our favorite local pond and fish dealers? I sometimes hunt online for businesses in the Tampa Bay area that sell pond stuff (koi, aquatic plants, and other supplies but don't really see many out there. In addition to Adam's, where else do you shop for your pond and garden, Babalu_aye?

Since you're in WC: Pine Fines - Treemart (N. Tampa) Turface - Lesco (WC) MPV, NOT Allsport! Get them to order it.... Crushed Granite - call Shell's Feed Store (Tampa), and ask if they will still order GROWER grit. Gypsum - any local nursery will order it for you if they don't have it in stock. CRF with minors - Helena Chemical, I get mine delivered to my doorstep for no additional charge but that may not be possible where you are. Bamboo Rabbit turned me on to them and they are great, products reasonably priced....Caliber Cote 14-14-14 has all the minors in it and you should be able to get it in Dade City for a very reasonable price for the 50lb. bag if you're willing to make the trip. Odd but they don't stock it in Tampa since that's just their corporate location, you'll find it stocked where the farmers really are ;-) Tom

Try to keep your eyes open at the local food stores especially the specialty food stores. Also look for the Datil hot peppers. The center for them is around St. Augustine, Florida. How far is that from you? But local florida stores should get some. Forget nurseries. You will have to learn how to germinate your own seeds if you want the best peppers. Glad you joined us! In no time, you'll feel like you're home. I came from NJ 11 years ago, when DH was transfered here. I have learned so much on this site, even all about love bugs. lol

Another Tampa gardener here. I live between the zoo and Dale Mabry. If you want to come by and pick up some easy pass-along plants, I almost always have something.

thanks for all the welcome notes! i'll also see if i can help anywhere. since i grew up here and my mother knows tons about gardening here, i may be able to pass some other things along here and there!
