The Taste Of Romano Beans

I did a taste test of three types of Romano Beans. I cooked Helda, SuperMaconi and Musica in three pots, all seasoned the same. Put the cooked beans in three dishes and did a taste test. I could not tell any difference in the taste. They all tasted the same, GOOD.

I am glad thay your romano beans are doing well and you are enjoying them in your cooking. I have the same experience, to me all the beans taste good and I have the same three that you have, the Helda are from you, and few other snaps, I like them all!

Hello Silvia,

You have a beautiful garden and well organized. I'm sad to say it puts mine to shame. I have everything all jumbled together. I try to grow too much in a small space and when it gets grown it is over crowded.

I think your limitations in space warrant you starting with pole beans. The above postings are right in that everyone has their own taste. I started with strictly pole beans & have some experience with them. "Emerite" is the best pole filet bean, yields are very good and early in my northeast PA garden (get from Pinetree Garden Seeds). I also like the purple-pdded varietes, and have great luck with "Trionfo Violetto" (get them from Pinetree Garden Seeds). I am also heavy shell bean grower/eater. I grow "Wren's Egg" (from Heirloom Seeds), "True Cranberry" (from Seed Savers Exchange), and when i can find them cannellini and borlotto pole beans (Gourmet Seeds International). I also grow bush beans for shelling & drying, "Dutch Brown", "Flagrano" flageolet (the most tasty shell bean in my opinion), and "Black Turtle" beans, which have amazing yields for cuban black bean soup. Cindy, I know you will enjoy that greenhouse. If you have been growing vegetables in pots and transporting them back and forth this winter. I have been lucky enough to have had plenty of peppers and tomatoes from my garden. We have had very warm weather December, January and half of February. Now it looks like we are going to get our cool winter weather in March. They say we may have a light frost this weekend. All my spring vegetable crop is up. So now I will have to use all my wifes old bed sheets plus purchase some frost cloth to cover everything. My Daddy always grew hot peppers in a container when I was a kid in Georgia. He would sit it on the porch during the warm days and bring it inside at night. He loved eating hot pepers with his vegetables. Luther

Fran Berner Landfrauen is definitely a very good bean, extremely tasty. However it has one disadvantage and that is its lateness. So I urge you to grow at least one other. For example Kwintus, which will go right through the season and produce early and late. Another you might like to try is Kentucky Wonder. A yellow wax bean, Neckargold, also produces early. You can never grow too many different tall growing beans. I usually grow over 20 varieties every year. Do they taste better? Not necessarily, but there are many more tall varieties than bush varieties, so you have much wider choice. Often bush varieties are agri-business varieties because they can be machine harvested. High yielding and ripening all pods evenly on the same day. Not so good for gardeners who want to harvest over a long period. I cannot promise that the tall varieties I grow and love will taste equally good at your location, because weather and soil and cultivation influences flavour, but I can promise that you will find a huge choice of tasty beans amongst the tall varieties. They may need trellising, but it is so much easier to pick standing upright, than having to bend and stoop. Good luck

Karen, I'm not Tony, but I may have a small amount. I had been looking for this variety for years. I had some in a Johnny's seed pack from the early 200Os that didn't germinate, but mid-season last year I found a small amount packed away that I had saved, I believe in 2008 and they germinated and grew. Other than sampling some fresh in the garden, I saved all the seed from that small crop and I'm doing a germination test now just to see how they do. If they are viable, which they should be, and Tony has none to provide, I'd be happy to send some. No charge. Dad just has to promise to save some seed to help keep the variety going. I'm working a new garden since I moved to this new homestead last fall so my planting is a bit behind but the first 25' planting of these great beans go in tomorrow.

Thank you Luther, your garden is beautiful and produces well for you, the harvest is all that matter.:)

I am picking a lot of cold season and warm season crops, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, beans. Kale, cabbages, lettuce, bananas.

Yesterday for dinner we had a delicious red cabbage dish to go with roasted pork and today for lunch I am having beans with cucumber yogurt dip, delicious!

Man, I'm depressed. My Kentucky Wonder pole beans are just now starting to flower. They're way behind everybody else's beans, apparently.

This was the site of a three sister's garden last fall. Once the corn and pumpkins were done, I planted carrots and onions. The beans produced well into winter.

There's a few carrots and onions left. Once they're gone, this little plot will be allowed to go fallow for the summer.

I have planted Asparagus beans three times, darn rabbit keeps eating them. I also planted some heirloom beans [something Zester] & he has eaten most of them. Looks like I will have very few this time.

The Tradition, that is a nice size veggie garden and don't worry your pole beans will produce eventually. I plant sweet potatoes for the summer, they are growing in different spots in the garden, the Japanese purple are growing under a pigeon pea small tree together with thorn less blackberries. Another 3 sisters for me.:)

Silvia, sounds like you had a very good dinner. We also had a pork roast with fresh vegetables from the garden. But we had to purchase sweet potatoes from the store.

The Tradition, like silvia says don't give up, they will produce in time. My garden is running a month later this year due to the unusual weather.

nene09, you will have a fat healthy rabbit to eat if nothing else. I have the squirrels to contend with. I try to trap them and transport them across the river. I would like to use my pellet gun and kill them. But in my old age I don't like to kill anything if I can prevent it.

My pole beans are just starting to get going now too.They've had blossoms for a while now, and yesterday when I checked them I saw the first few beans growing. They seem to be on the same schedule as my cowpeas since I started them so late!

Truscifi, you will have mature beans this next weekend. It is amazing how fast they grow. I pick mine every other day and I get enough for three meals. I give them to all my neighbors as we can eat only so many. Also the squash and zucchini are coming out our ears. Have to pick them every other day also.
