French filet garden beans: bush or pole?
Comments (2)Carol- They do have both types. I found some wonderful Emerite beans (seeds from Scheepers) that have lavender flowers and green beans. No matter how long they grow, they don't seem to get tough. They're beautiful with the Purple Pole beans, which have dark purple flowers and purple beans...which turn dark green when you cook them :)...See Morelooking for heirloom Italian pole bean seeds
Comments (1)Tony, e-mail me through my member's page. I have seed to Ralph's Italian Heirloom, an Italian Heirloom which I received from a seminary prof, back around '84. He got it from his Barber in Clarks Summit, PA; who raised it for years. He kept a shoe box of seed in his barbershop and encouraged customers to take some for their gardens. This bean is pretty good, but not my favorite for snaps, as it gets tough when it gets real large. But it is prolific and it is good as a snap, when young. The seed is quite large and round, like a Romano type. It's brown & beige speckled. George Tahlequah, OK...See MorePole-type wax beans: where to order
Comments (17)Galina, the English version of the Ingegnoli site is inoperational at present, and my Italian is very limited... do you know if they will ship to the U.S.? I know that for some time, the restrictive phyto-sanitary requirements discouraged many Continental seed companies (and even some Canadian companies) from shipping here. As you have stated, the information we have in the U.S. is not always current. I know that the regulations for entry of seeds to the U.S. have relaxed somewhat recently (although there are signs that this is only temporary). To your knowledge, are there many European seed companies that will ship here by mail? If you could name any - even just those you know of in the U.K. - it would be of great help to many U.S. gardeners here on GW. Thank you for the listing of additional European seed saving organizations. As a member of SSE, I freely acknowledge that they tend to think of themselves as the center of the seed-saving universe [grinning sheepishly]. While there may be some degree of legitimacy to that claim (based upon the many similar organizations that they have inspired worldwide) they are certainly not the only player on the field, and perhaps not even the first. Just the 500-pound gorilla in the room - for better or worse. ;-) Thanks for setting the record straight....See MoreHmm....trying to understand my Romano Pole beans
Comments (7)Oh wow Remy!! those look great! We had an exceptional drought and extemely hot temps. We had something like 60 days over 90 and a bunch over 100. But I did water the garden every other day for an hour. My cucs and tomatoes did great. My other pole beans didn't do so good either......They are all just starting to make beans. I'm thinking that they are very far behind. I picked some last week to freeze, and by the looks of your's, I picked infant ones! haha Maybe that's why the blanching water turned red?? We had a stretch of hot weather last year too and I didn't get any of the Romano pole beans then either. Maybe if we have a long, reasonable Fall, I'll still get some good beans from them. Wow........mine are about 1/3 the size of yours and they grow mostly singly or with one other! You should be very proud of yours! :)...See Moreshp123
