I didn't spend a lot of time researching alternatives, but I use Blogger...it's provided by Google, and it's free. Your blog's address will be your_blog_name.blogspot.com.

I found it easy and straightforward to get started, though I am still learning and tweaking my design. You can:
(a) keep it completely private so that only you can see it - mine was private until last week, or
(b) make it available only to people you approve, so you can limit access to your family and friends, or
(c) make it open to the public, which also allows it to show up on web search results

I haven't seen anything about posting limits; I've seen blogspot blogs with hundreds of posts and photos and thousands of comments, so I am guessing that if there is a limit, it must be pretty high. You can upload photos directly from your computer, or you can post a link to your photos at an online photo service like Photobucket.

Hosting ads to earn income from your blog is optional; you won't make any real money from them unless your site gets lots of hits. Since it seems that just about everyone has a blog these days, most blogs aren't going to get many hits...otherwise we'd all be doing nothing but reading each others' blogs all day!

Fair warning: if you're privacy-minded, bear in mind that Google will be collecting as much personal information on you as possible in order to "personalize your Google experience." Translation: make money off you every way it can. (However, if you already have a Google account for any other purpose, Google already has a fat file on you already, and the blog won't give them much more information.)

I recommend Blogspot also.....I have just started myself, and find it very user friendly, and easily found on searches...It is a great way to share your experiences and also keep track of the progress of your own garden seasonally through pictures...I will link mine also to give you an idea of what can be done...many templates to choose from! Thanks Tina, I don't know if getting on Photobucket is as easy as you guys make it out to be, but you know that I am still back in the hand-crank telephone mind-set, and anything invented since 1950 is rocket-science to me....
