Dune Sunflower -- will it stay nice looking??

I had rave reviews of dune sunflower from the native nurseries, but I've noticed lately that the dune sunflowers planted in our neighborhood as ground cover are looking black and scraggly. The local nursery guy said that is because these plants 1) don't last very long, and 2) look terrible in the humid months.

Can anyone shed some light on this topic? Maybe there is a way to keep them looking great with a little pruning or fertilizing?

Thanks in advance!

Jane
