This is the third time I've tried to write a message. I keep losing it. Oh well pride goeth before a fall. Here's an oldie you may well remember. Gail, the leaves might be similar but my plant has white bell flowers hanging down.

Oh I forgot to tell you. My daughter is getting married on
May 31st. The ceremony is on a cruise ship and a bunch of us are going on that cruise for 5 days. There will be much
drinking debauchery and eating. Lobster dinner here I come.This will give you lots of time to come up with an answer to "to name that weed" Goldenpond would you like some pics or are you only wanting flower pics.

That is a sparkleberry bush, Vaccinium arboreum, which is the largest member of the blueberry family. In the fall it will have small black berries that wildlife seem to love but doesn't taste all that good to humans although it is edible. I have a large bush growing under the edge of the oak tree in the back that I love. I wouldn't call it an invasive or a weed altough it is native.

It's in a neglected bed of Lily of the Valley that has coneflowers, milkweed, goldenrod and probably other native plants that have snuck in or been planted very haphazardly. I plan to keep spraying the LOV with Round Up until it stops returning, and encourage all the natives to increase. I don't know if I should try to make it look organized or not. Time wise, I vote not. I'll keep adding shade tolerant natives and see what survives. Thanks for helping. Maybe I need to leave it another year and see what it does. Martha

Dfscudder, with the introduction of GMO crops engineered to be resistant to the herbicide glyphosate, farmers can now apply the herbicide to their fields throughout the growing season. This practice eliminates all plants other than the GMO crop, including milkweed, that used to provide habitat for numerous insects. Carrying it one step further, those insects in turn provided food for birds. No insects - no birds; even seed-eating birds need insects to feed their young; insects make up about 90% of the young birds' diet. Therefore, many of our agricultural areas are now virtual deserts. Adding to the damage, surveys have shown that a great many farmers also apply herbicide well beyond the perimeter of their fields, eliminating still more habitat. Another product under great suspicion for adding to the problem is the new class of pesticides call neonicotinoids, or "neonics" for short. These are systemic and are taken up into the tissues of the plant, delivering a dose of poison to any insect that feeds upon it. Initially it was maintained that the material was only taken into the stems and leaves, but now it seems that it is, in fact, translocated to the pollen and nectar as well. Neonics seem to be quite persistent; rather than breaking down quickly, they can remain present and toxic in plant tissues for many months. Certainly there are other problems facing the monarchs: loss of habitat in their overwintering sites, diseases like OE, nuclear polyhedrosis virus, and pseudomonas bacteria, also parasitic insects like tachinid flies and braconid wasps, as well as unfavorable weather, particularly during migrating season. Cool, wet weather in spring makes their northward journey more difficult, and dry summers can leave them with precious few nectaring plants on their southward journey in late summer/early autumn. Any one or two of these challenges probably would not be insurmountable, but it seems the monarch is facing the proverbial "perfect storm" of multiple challenges to its survival.

Hi, I don't think many plants compete well with the ivy. Someone here can probably comment more on that. The plants you've chosen have a rather large variety of growing requirements... V. bluebells generally take a rich woodsy soil with a fair amount of shade. V. creeper is a ground cover that I don't think will do well in pots. Elderberries get very big, sucker and like quite a bit of water and at least part sun. Green coneflowers get very big. I have huge clumps of them growing by the creek. I am not positive of their growing requirements, but they are growing wild in my yard in part sun and above average moisture. Great blue lobelia requires at least part sun and above average moisture. That might do OK in a pot. Some types of milkweed have a large taproot, so I'm not sure they will do well in pots. I'm not sure if they all have taproots, though. Blue wood aster may do OK in pots. Most types of JPW get very large. They like above average water and at least part sun, preferably full. While I think there are many natives that would do well in pots, I am not sure all those you have in mind would work well. I hope I'm not discouraging you from trying natives in pots. You may want to do a little more research on what you chose to try. Hopefully others here can offer their thoughts. I'm by no means an expert. I hope someone here on GW knows the answer! I too have these plants (weeds?) and at first I let them grow, bloom and set seeds. The next year I had tons of them, so I immediately pulled started them all up. What is interesting is that the foliage looks like it belongs to the hibiscus family.

Yes, Sparkleberry bushes are natives and good for wildlife. We have a couple of very large ones on our property. I would try to leave them alone if they aren't doing any harm where they are. The flowers actually have a wonderful fragrance at certain times of the day. I wouldn't say they are invasive, as I have only spotted a few little ones other than the two large ones that we have.

I've got some small bushes that anyone can have however getting us together might be a small problem. I won't be home from the cruise until after the fifth. I live in Archer though and is a bit of a ride We could meet somewhere, as long as its a fun place.

I would also offer to share, however, every time I have tried to dig up a native it has died on me. I know someone somewhere has been successful at this but I don't know what the secret is. I've tried Paw Paws, Carolina Jessamines, Walter's Viburnums and all died. The only thing I've been able to dig up and save are the Zephyr Lillies. I even tried air-layering and it didn't work. Not that I want to make money on it, but I know there are a lot of people who are very interested in natives that would like to have them, and we have thousands here.
