Roses and orchids and Hoyas in Tampa ( warning:many photos)

Thanks to thonotorose (aka Veronica) I saw her post here about the USF Orchid and Rose show this past Saturday where I hoped to find some OGR's. Well they had only one OGR (Louis Phillipe) which I bought, $20 for 5 gallon size.

They had a lot of gorgeous hybrid tea roses and orchids. The roses were on Fortuniana stock which is hard to find. They were stunning and I bought one climber (Fourth of July).

The best part was meeting Veronica and trading roses. She also brought samples of some of the roses she grows (see photo). I wish you could smell them. I am IN LOVE with E. Veyrat Hermanos. Such a pretty rose with a clunky name.

If I got any of them mislabelled in the photo it's my fault, Veronica tried to help me get it right.

I included the hoya photo just for Jan1 since she is a collector. USF also has a nice selection of native plants for sale. The roses and orchids were a special 2 day event but USF sells natives as well as Louis Phillipe rose all the time.

It was SO HOT that day that I didn't take the time to stroll the botanical grounds. Another time, maybe cooler weather.

It was a well run show with reasonable prices from vendors not normally available retail.

Hi, Denise! Hi, Veronica! Nice to see you having such fun, and thanks for the beautiful photos! Love it when folks share like this! Congrats on your Louis Philippe, too!

I wasn't able to make it to the orchid/rose event ... I would have been helping the TAmpa Rose society if I could.

I'm not buying right now anyway...yeah, right!

That is a nice collection of OGRs. I can really go overboard on roses. I've done that in the past and I'm trying not to do it again. They all look SO pretty!

Now the hoyas are another story! I've gotten a lot from USF and some on trades. I have about 30 varieties now and I'm afraid they will take over my porch as they continue to grow bigger.

I'm glad you guys had a good day and a good swap. Thanks for the pix.

Born and raised in northern IL, currently residing in central IL... we did pick up one gardening zone moving south a bit. I'd give anything to live in central coastal Cali, but I'd never get my husband to agree to moving. He claims to like the winters, and does have a good reason... the cold kills off a lot of bad things, and keeps nature genetically strong. I'll buy that, but I still don't enjoy the bone-chilling cold! I get chilled in fall and don't thaw until spring! And the older I get, the more the cold bothers me physically... I'm old enough to dislike winter! The only way we'd ever move to warmer climes would be if our children moved their families there first... only then would my husband agree to a move. So, it looks like I'm stuck gardening in IL... where I must emulate a warm climate to grow orchids and other tropicals, dragging them out for summer and back in for winter... but I do get to enjoy lilacs, peonies, tulips and other bulbs and plants that are deciduous or require a chill in order to bloom. I guess it's not so bad... we have white Christmases, germ killing cold, and can enjoy plants that need the lower temps... and summer brings all the warmth and humidity that makes the garden bloom so beautifully... It may make orchid growing a challenge... but real gardeners aren't afraid of a challenge, and in fact, we welcome the chance to prove our prowess! What the hey, my Epi is still alive... I must be doing something right! :-)

Fawnridge, I love crotons. I have a few, none rare I don't think. I like pink tones, and especially like a small Croton 'Piecrust' I picked up last season at USF. Jupiterplants, I know what you mean about the Sealing Wax palm. I currently have 4 of them. They are growing well. I killed my first one that I had several years ago by planting it too close to the sliding door of the greenhouse, where there was unfortunately a draft. It got a bit chilled and bit the dust. I made certain to plant the new ones (I was really, REALLY lucky and got them for only $10 each when I made a larger order from Hawaii, otherwise I wouldn't have so many)pretty far into the much warmer interior of the GH. I really like palms and am a sucker for the smaller growing understory palms that have new red leaves. This is one of my favorites, Calyptrocalyx pachystachis I am also a sucker for the "finger like" Anthuriums. I bought this Anthurium polydactylon off of eBay 2 years ago as a smallish plant, and finally trained it up a totem. I habe been growing the Costus "Maroon Chalice" for years and love the bright red architectural look of its stems. I discovered by trial and error that the Costus "Green Chalice" is actually root hardy here and comes back, but the Maroon Chalice doesn't. So I keep a goodly patch going in the GH thank you to everyone who has replied so far. I'd like to see pics of your stuff!

The other problem was, sensory overload!!!! I kept reminding myself to look for Veronica's visor with silk roses, but OMG there were so many plants to look at! I left, coincidentally, the USF Plant Store (they had the absolute best deals) at 11:30. My intent is to hit USF first next time. Bad Bill was done at 11:30. He had a spiral (wicked) broken leg a few years ago, and the screws and hardware were giving him a time. Re Paw Paw, my brother in Michigan has plenty of Paw Paw Trees on his 15 acres. He lives relatively close to the city of Paw Paw, MI, btw. I didn't realize Paw Paws were heat tolerant. Do you GW'ers want cuttings or fruit from those trees? Those trees must be dormant now, with the cold and short daylight sun. So sorry I missed hooking up with you GW folks, it would have been nice to meet you!

Cattleya, Hi there. Yeah, I haven't been on the C+S forum in a long time! Thanks for the compliment :) Speaking of which, your pics are gorgeous!! No such thing as irrelevant - speaking for myself, I love to see pics...and you have trees/plants in all your pics...so that's pretty relevant to me! By the way, when you see your fingerprints in a picture, you KNOW you can take a good pic! Congrats. Blackwyld, Got 2 questions for ya. First, what is the difference b/w SLR and a regular digital camera? I know that SLR is much better (and I can probably look up what SLR means and why it's better..but I thought I'd just ask you). Too bad I just bought a new camera before I saw your gorgeous pics! But it would be much too expensive for me right now anyway, which X-mas coming up. Second, what setting do you use to take those gorgeous flower pics? I like the in-focus flower pic and out-of-focus background. Thanks :) On a side note - it's funny that when I look back at my full jade plant pics, part of me actually likes the dark green foliage (in comparison to the light foliage it has changed into since being in the sun). I wish I could keep that dark green foliage with the added red tinge - oh well, not gonna complain! Gabi

It was a nice day! The roses and orchids were lovely, but almost none of my beloved antiques! I am going to write them and ask them to think about including OGR's in the future. It would be great to see some of the southern vendors there.

(I was secretly wishing that I would come upon a Souvenir de la Malmaison grafted to Fort, but it was nice to dream about a dream of a rose.)

In the USF sale area they had Aronia bushes for sale covered with berries. I have read that these will do very well here with no pest problems. I think I am going to go back....

Great meeting Denise and her DH. I learned some about photography, too. (As you can see from the quality of the pics.) Gardeners are the BEST people.

Enjoy the Crepescule and I love my Carnations.

thonotorose, thanks again for the Crepescule rose and the info about the show--it's great to meet another OGR rose lover.

I saw those Aronia bushes (one woman said "Oh look-blueberries") but I didn't know anything about them so passed them up. They looked very healthy.

Beautiful plants and beautiful ladies! Doesn't get any better than that! I especially love the rose bouquet from the Tampa Rose Society. Wish I could put my nose in it!
