Did you soak them in the bleach solution before planting? I made the mistake 3 weeks ago of not doing that. I thought everything was OK too. And I just came in from outside, I had to dig up my Stargate corridor, and Rabbit ears and treat them for ROT! I did a lot of trimming including cutting off 3 fans (which broke my heart) but they were starting to turn brown. I used Nancys recipe, sprayed them with a fungicide for all the boo-boo's that I made trimming and then I had to spray inceticide, cause I thought I saw some mites. Right now I have them drying off in my house cause its going to thunderstorm. Shew, I do have to say, I don't think I should be planting in the summer anymore. The heat and humidity is just torture for the plants. I made the mistake of placing another order yesterday before noticing I had a problem with my last order. I really really don't want to loose these! One of them is a $75 plant! that is the most expensive one that I have. boo-hoo! Anyway, not trying to scare you, I followed all the rules. No watering for a week after the initial water in and everything. I don't know what went wrong! I hope you have better luck with yours! -Jessica

Jessica... I am so sorry! It just sucks when your babies are sick! I did soak them for an hour in a bleach solution (5%) before planting, and I brushed on a light coating of rootone on any places in the root/crown area that had damage with a small paint brush. I also planted them right away, and thankfully we are (finally) having dry warm weather. It has been in the 80's with a nice breeze. (If you can believe it - 80, Texas, July??? Do those three words go together???) There is even a little cloud cover which blocks the sun sometimes... But if the weather goes up into the 90's or more, I have the makings for a sunshade contraption to put over my new babies - I don't want them getting boiled roots!

I am pretty new to daylilies, but have been gardening for a while... so I try to apply what I know (soil, watering schedule, planting) to what I am learning about DL's on this forum. Only think I can think of (besides CR already being present) is soil drainage? Do you have pretty good soil? Humidity could be the culprit too I guess - just too much wet. Even with great drainage (we amended LOADS of our soil) my rosemary suffered when we had daily rains for weeks and one of my lavenders died. Sometimes the weather just sucks. I hope your babies make it... I am watching mine like a hawk... Thanks for the well wishes...

When buying in the late spring and summer, I usually just put them in pots with good drainage and place in the shade until fall when I put them in their final homes.. I have alot of success doing that in avoiding the rot crisis. Those that are freshly planted this year, you should keep your eye on them until fall as they tend to rot easier until they are completely settled.

I didn't know you weren't supposed to water for 1 week after the initial watering. I've already placed 2 orders later than I should have this year and I was watering them every day because I thought that's what they needed. Luckily, they've done great. I have another order coming tomorrow so I may try watering them less. I only ordered cheap ones though because I know this isn't the best time to plant daylilies.

I just ordered 12 daylilies from Mariett's can't wait to get them.
But in the mean time I got my other order today have them soaking now and will be potting them up this evening once it cools down. Only had five but was given a bouns.

mikeandbarb - oooohhh... looks like you picked up quite a few! Even some spiders!! I am looking into pinks for a spring delivery, so you will have to let me know "pink" Angel rose, Best kept secret, and Kiss me tender are for you... (since we probably have close to the same growing conditions)

I really like that Coral Autunmn too!! Maybe that one will fit by my 'Going Bananas'???? Hee...hee...

I can't help it! Seriously, I walked the garden 4!! times yesterday to see if anything was happening... and then again this morning (ps... it is only 9 am here). The good news is, on some of them, the middle leaves (even though they've been cut) are growing taller. I am taking it as a good sign.

You know I have the addiction bad... In fact, I have been meaning to ask... Are the symptoms so predictable that you KNEW I was going to order pinks next?? LOL, I think we may be able to get DL Addiction added to the DSM!

Now that I put up the shade, it is nice and overcast today! Figures! Guess I'd rather have the Murphy's Law effect than HOT sun...

Angie, they were out of Best kept Secret and Coral Autumn subs for them are August Morn and Borders on Pink but wouldn't you know it they messed up my order and left out Kiss me Tender. They've already shipped out my order, now I am afraid I won't get Kiss Me Tender. Second mistake they made was shipping them out today when I set shipping up for Monday. I read Dave's reviews and everything looked promising that is why I ordered from them.

I did write them to let them know of the mistake so I shall see how it goes.

When Pancho Villa blooms for you be sure to post a pic would ya? I have only seen the pic on Marietta's site, and am curious about what it looks like. The one on their site is nice, but thats the only one ive seen.

jkunkel - I will post pics of all of the blooms... :o) I can't wait. I had a hard time finding pictures of a lot of these so I thought if I posted mine, it would make it easier on others looking to buy in the future.

You know I was kidding about the 'hate you' thing, right? LOL... I really hate the fact that **I** don't live there!

I find that a lot of info on how to plant bareroot DL's is spread all over the place, so I thought I would post my personal experience here so others could see. This is my first order of bare root DL's, so the learning curve has been steep. Thankfully, there are some really knowledgable people here and they help alot. I just keep asking questions!!

I just got a great post on another thread (Aren't I Pretty Daylilies - Questions?) from tsbccowboy. He gave me a link to his pictures when he got his order, so I will pass it on here.

So, my Cousin Jewel baby is trying to put up a scape! Boy, she's tough! 98 degrees and new! I know I am supposed to cut it off to help her grow... but I don't know if I can do it... (whaaaa....)

Fairysoapgirl, I was wondering what kind of covering that you used for your daylilies? I may start transplanting a few of my dayliies this weekend from pots into the ground so I may need to rig up something like you had over your daylilies...

I transplanted two of mine that was in pots last week, Yours should be fine because the roots should be established and not bare root. It's the bare rooted ones you'd have to worry about but it is getting cooler so I think even planting bare root ones in the ground would be fine.

Dianne - I went to Lowes and bought shade cloth (garden section). Inside, I went to the lumber section and picked up some wooden stakes, the longest ones I could find (about 2' long). Next to the shade cloth were these little metal cleat type things... I just used those to hammer the shade cloth to the stakes... cheap, fast, easy and temporary. Oh yeah, and I doubled the shade cloth - it comes this way already (folded in half the long ways). You can buy it in rolls already packaged, or by the yard. Good luck!
