There are a couple in Washington D.C. growing in peoples yards. The hardiest variety is "Swarthsmore Hardy", and it what developed in PA. I think they are sold at forestfarm. Giant Sequoia does better in the east because they can handle drier soil conditions here, there are also a bunch in D.C. and a large one in PA. However the best redwood for the east is the Dawn Redwood, very hardy and was once native to the east coast. Can grow 200+ feet and does so at relatively fast rate. www.coldstreamfarm.com has good sized sequoias and dawn redwoods for cheap prices check them out. Thats where i got mine.

actually if you check out the zone map that Ron linked to you will notice that a number of points on the oregon (including coos bay/north bend and bandon where i live)coast are rated as 9a while the gold beach/brookings area is rated zone 9b. he makes a good point in noting that north of c.b./n.b. large old cordyline australis is rare or absent which is a good indicator of periodic low winter temps regardless of what a zone map might indicate. i may also add that after living over 20 years in the area, i recall at least 3 times where exceptional winter lows (below 20f) in that area killed to the ground exotics like acacia dealbata, callistemon citrinus, and the cordyline (although all came back in the spring). maps aside, the oregon (and washington and b.c.) coast is generally a great place to grow a huge variety of "mild temperate" plants ornamental and otherwise as long as they are tolerant of cool summer temps. for the same reason, it is a challenging place to grow roses (but an excellent place to grow rose diseases). on the other hand, inland portions like the willamette valley from portland to roseburg while somewhat hotter in the summer and somewhat cooler in the winter are still extremely mild and closer to world-class medical care and big-city services. another thing to consider is that because of a sudden surge in real estate values down here on the coast property in the eugene-roseburg inland area may be somewhat more affordable while living-wage employment opportunities are also much better.

Let me try to clarify a bit. There are three Western sessile Trillium which are or can be white. Trillium chloropetalum, T. albidum and T. parviflorum. According to "Trilliums" by Frederick W. Case Jr. and Roberta B. Case, the range of Trillium chloropetalum (sessile and can be white) is the central California coast region. Fruit purple. Flower petals 35-65mm = 1.38"-2.6". The USDA plants website has the range for chloropetalum into northern California but not into Oregon. Albidum - sessile and most often white - range (Case)central California north to central Oregon. USDA - Central California up through Oregon and into Clark County Washington. Case notes that where cloropetalum and albidum overlap there has been hybridizing. Fruit of albidum is green or purplish-green (Case). Flower petals 48-78mm = 1.88"-3.07" quite large. Parviflorum (Victor G. Soukup)- sessile creamy white, occassionally purple stained range NW Oregon north into Pierce & Thurston counties in Washington. USDA has the range only in Washington. Fruit is dark-red purple or maroon. Flower petals are 30-40mm = 1.18"-1.57" (considerably smaller than albidum but not 1/4-1/3 of an inch) Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast incorrectly lists the Washington sessile Trillium as chloropetalum.
