Watering Gardenia Bonsai but leaves are drying out
Comments (4)Probably over-watered. Gardenias like humid air and good light. If there is not enough light then the plant does not need much water. The excess water causes the roots to rot. When you water does it come out of the bottom freely? If not then the bottom hole may be clogged. The roots need air too. I would start by poking holes into the dirt using a chopstick. May 10-12 holes all the way to the bottom. If you are feeling a bit brave, take it out of the pot carefully without disturbing its root mass and check if its soggy and may be even smelly. If so then wrap the soil in tissue paper. The paper will absorb excess water. Then prune some of the rotting roots from the bottom and repot the plant with some dry bonsai soil. Small bonsai is best watered by putting the pot in a tray of water deep enough so that the soil soaks up from the bottom. Takes about 15-30 minutes. Then take it out and let the excess drain away. Do not use any fertilizer now. Just let recover first....See MoreWatering new gardenias in ground
Comments (5)I don't find gardenias any more demanding at least as far as watering is concerned than other garden plants. A little experimenting with your drip system will be required. How much water per hour do your emitters, emit? Is your soil fast draining sand or moisture retaining clay? Use your fingers or a moisture probe to access whether you need to change your system settings. Al...See MoreGardenia confusion or jelousy?!
Comments (7)Eh, it figures...those damn pod people drive me nuts! Gardenias grow like crazy for them! All you have to do is let them take over your real body and *SHAZAM* you will grow gardenias like...well like a pod person! If they actually aren't pods (only alternative) is that they sold their souls to the Devil so that they can grow them. Only thing I can think of! I had a great aunt that supposedly could grow gardenias, had a huge plant 4 feet tall in a pot. She hardly did anything to it, just watered it once a week. She gave it to my mom, who promptly killed it in a week. I wonder if maybe there is a gardenia care gene...and it skips a generation. Because I sure as heck don't have it, lol!!!!...See MoreConfused about watering my gardenia..and it's buds
Comments (8)My climate is very arid, with dew points rarely above 50F (10C), which means the humidity is usually in the 30 to 40% range. I don't think humidity is as big a factor in a gardenia setting and maintaining its buds as is temperature. Try to give the plant night temperatures below 60F (15C) and days above 70F (20C), and keep the soil evenly moist, avoiding the big swings between dry and wet. The water in my area has a pH of 8, and my plants don't mind, although I do use acidifying fertilizers like fish emulsion and Miracid. Another thing that gardenias seem to demand is fresh air. Keeping a fan going in the room (for indoor gardenias) helps them 'breathe'. If you are growing your plants outside, you may find them unwilling to set buds except during the cooler months of spring and fall, when those night temperatures are below 60. Hope this helps!...See Moremeyermike_1micha
