Organic way to get rid of aphids?
Comments (47)I'm a newbie to gardening. I'm growing some veggies for the first time. My Purple Hull Peas appear to have some Black Aphids on them. At least that's what I've been told they are. I really don't know. I bought 1500 Lady Bugs. I released them per the instructions. - Stored them in the refrigerator. - Took them out and warmed them up for about 30 to 40 minutes. - Released half at dusk on the first night. - Released the other half at dusk on the second night. The Lady Bugs just strolled around the Purple Hull plants, walking right over the Aphids, not paying any attention to them. Okay, a few looked like they stopped to eat a little but, not very many at all. In a couple of days, there were hardly any Lady Bugs in the garden. A few days more and the Aphids have spread. They're taking over! I just sprayed some "pre-mixed" Garlic and Pepper Tea on them. I hope that helps. But, if not, I guess I'll try the Neem Oil (from seed, not leaf) or, maybe some soap and water with some oil mixed in....See MoreLittle girls gyrating to Single Ladies
Comments (52)When I dropped my DS off at school yesterday, I couldn't believe the SHORT and TIGHT shorts this 3rd or 4th grader had on! I hope someone at school said something to her about wearing that. I don't even know what the dress code is at school, since I have a boy, and all he wants to wear is UnderArmor athletic stuff. Plus, she had on the one pair of flip flops that I DISPISE (sp??), you know, the one's that have fabric ties on the top that fall to the sides and get all dirty. I thought those were 10 years ago anyway! LOL!...See MoreCabinet installation: is this acceptable (cosmetic & structural)?
Comments (56)Thanks to you all for replying, cpartist, salex and suzanne_sl. As hokey as this sounds, it really helps to not have a feeling of being alone through all of this. I showed DH the latest development this evening, and he silently just shook his head. We can't even get on with such a simple (yet gratifying) step as hooking up our UCL LEDs. cpartist: It'd be interesting to know what led your neighbors to choose Showplace, which is sold at a 'value' price point while allowing semi-custom choices. This is my first and last kitchen reno: I don't have anything else to compare with regarding price, value, etc. In the expansive world that is cabinets, I'm trying to figure out what the minimum benchmarks/expectations are for a value line. This is not to say I'm complaining about what we paid: if I balked at the price, I would have expressed this at the outset. It's night time now, but I'll also post tomorrow a few pics of the current cabinet interiors. salex: Thanks so much for reinforcing all the research I've done about screws, threads, etc. Regarding pre-drilled holes, I had to laugh (in a maniacal way, at this point): DH is the only person in three years (of folks who've held a drill in this kitchen) who as EVER pre-drilled a hole. I completely understand folks are working by the hour, time is money, etc., and they're willing to roll the dice when NOT pre-drilling; but the cracks and chips in the wood tell the tale. suzanne: Thanks for taking the time to post your pics. Not knowing exactly how cabinets are constructed, I don't want to automatically conclude that gaps are inherently bad (except for the one I posted Feb. 23/9:26 a.m. - above fridge)....See MoreMy own crazy gardening lady front yard...
Comments (52)Pippa, if you look at my first photo, I followed the same protocol. Remove a little sod, create some bed space, remove more sod, create some bed space,.... It's tedious, but at least you get to see some finished product, right? Your garden is really taking shape. The completed sections look great! I hope a thermal-pak and some rest gave your back some relief. My sister and I joke about "cutting board back" which attacks us when we spend hours chopping stuff and prepping a big meal. "Sod removal and mulch back" is much more agonizing! Plumeria and Stephanie, thank you for the compliments! You are a wonderful gardener, Plumeria. It amazes me how much you have accomplished from scratch. Everything is trial and error, live and learn, in a garden. Florida is a piece of paradise, but it also has its irritating challenges to deal with, and you are a trooper with a wonderful, growing garden! Stephanie: Corvallis--you must be a Beaver. :-) I am so glad you have some real gardening space in which to create and to enjoy now in LA! Lots of super good stuff grows down there. I look forward to tours of your garden as it evolves! Carol...See Morediggerdee zone 6 CT
