Post your wintersowing injuries - and boy do I have one for you!
Comments (25)I went to a seed swap last week-end and people there told me that metal bits work better than wood bits at drilling through plastic jugs. I was glad to find that out because my wood bits just weren't cutting it! My drill is now my friend. I'm still scared of my wood-burning tool, though. Don't know why, just scared. Wasn't winter-sowing, but was cutting small skewers into short lengths to use as plant labels last spring and cut off the tip of my (hmmm..., which finger has that scar?) index finger. OH MY, it did hurt. Took off nerve endings and couldn't feel the piano keys under that finger for MONTHS. Was so happy when I began to feel again! Comments (4)Islb The Needles have seen single digits, they are on the same circuit as the Trachys, etc. No damage at all, they are kept dry all winter. I would cover your Needles etc from moisture,I really don't want to take a chance on exposing them because they grow so damn slow! I think this year being there 3-4th summer they will really pick up speed they were showing more growth at the end of last season than ever before! The Gloriosa and Aloifolia are in the Cactus shelter.I fear it hit 0(F) or less in there judging by the damage to the Trachys, etc. The Yuccas are solid though! Thankfully. Good idea with the raised bed,I think that will work really well. I think my Yuccas saw a few periods(a couple weeks long apiece)of below freezing weather, they seem to be pretty bomb proof. I also have three Y.aloifolia under an insulated (large double sided plastic), pot that is not heated I checked them after our 10 day stretch of of sub zero weather and they appeared to be fine. I would definitely recomend some kind of rain/moisture cover over the yuccas for winter though, you know well how prone they are to crown/spear rot....See Moreneedle palm, what happened?
Comments (4)Needle Palms are finicky for about the first 3-4 years in the ground dealing with winter. Some pull through with no damage, while others take damage even with protection. They do generally survive and seem to get hardier after their 3rd year in the ground. I have found them to be even more prone to winter damage than even Windmill Palms which generally do not have as much of an absolute hardiness when compared to the Needle Palm. In my area the Needle Palm when established, is bullet proof, the Windmill most years is too except in rare zone defining cold can be damaged or even killed in some cases....See MoreHow much space for a needle palm?
