I have one, purchased from a Publix grocery store in 2004, that is now over 6' tall and seems very happy. It's on the north east corner of my house; after a frost it has lost several fronds but I've never had it die back so badly that it lost all fronds.

Yes, they grow well here but keep it watered, they have no tolerance for dry soil. They come from rainforests of eastern Australia. In the ground, you can't overwater it. With good care they are fast growing. Also, they like partial shade to shade.

Same experience as above growers/posters: grows well in part shade, lots of water. I lost two due to not watering enough when I first planted. The next two have done great and endured the winter no problem (on the coldest night, I did cover them with, though they were a bit too big for that to be easy :))

Thanks all. She isn't into gardening at all. I really want to get one for her, but hope she keeps up the watering.

The will even grow in Apopka. I two fo them. The were happiest in the moist shade for me. I would love to see what that yard looks like now with all I planted and left. *sigh*
