From Baja California to the Sierra Grande (photos)

No, these aren't my vacation photos. Some of my daylilies are named for geographical locations. LOL There are lots of raindrops on daylilies this morning. It rained a bit overnight, in the early morning, and again right now. I'm so thankful to be getting so much rain today.

BAJA CALIFORNIA is reblooming in a pot under the carport.

PATSY CLINE, also under the carport, reblooming with some extra petal material in the middle.

WITCH'S STICK, a late bloomer

ORCHID ELEGANCE, also reblooming, covered with raindrops

BELLA SERA reblooming

STEALTH BOMBER reblooming

SIERRA GRANDE's reblooms are still anemic but getting better.

What happened to Witch's Stick, Orchid Elegance, Bella Serra, and Stealth Bomber? Baja California is going to be a stunner for sure. Lovely.

Well, thank you all for the nice words. But I don't know that the pictures are all that great, and I certainly did not want to drag a tripod up the hill. I have added an email address to my GW profile. The annual precipitation in the area should be over 55 inches. I do not have pictures of Abies bracteata or Pseudotsuga macrocarpa other than the Bigcone Douglas Fir that can be seen behind the Longleaf Pine broom in the last picture below.

This thread began as a means to discuss the issue of Sunset zones. The secondary motive was for me to try to explore the notion that elevation is a factor to RMG but not the only factor. Over the course of looking at climate data, I discovered that annual precipitation and the time of its occurrence may be a defining feature for the RMG region. Aridity cannot be the only determinate or wed all be over in the Southwest Gardening forum. Previous and somewhat naively, I had thought that these evergreen mountains here and there indicated that there were areas with rather high rainfall amounts - what hadn't quite sunk in was that while that is true, these areas were all at elevations where gardening becomes impossible. I began wondering if a particular native plant species was representative of the broad RMG region. I'm no expert on native plants so this was a fun exercise even if it doesn't appear to be absolutely successful (perhaps, an impossibility). It seemed to me that the Arrowleaf Balsamroot was most broadly representative. I'm hoping that other gardeners are giving this some thought and will comment. Nancy - My Born to Run didn't even scape this year. So I didn't get the chance to bemoan its splotchy blooms. Billy the Kid is not wowing me. It has short scapes, only a few buds, and the blooms are not even showing the applique pattern. I'm hoping subsequent blooms will look better. The blooms were a lot prettier last year. Kay - I'm not sure Abilene Lillian likes this climate. Only one of six fans scaped. I thought maybe a coreopsis was blocking its sun, so I dug it up and moved it about a week ago when we were having cooler temps. Still no scapes on those other fans. I'm glad to hear you're getting lots of rebloom. I have rebloom scapes coming on five daylilies now. I hope there will be some others. Julia - No Boys Allowed is a pretty one. Sierra Pacific windows…help, please! Why does the glass look "green"?

My problem is that I loved our custom made plantation shutters in our front window until the green windows happened. I leave the shutters open now, have taupe curtains hanging in the windows between them, and I’m on the fence about taking down the shutters. I’m still mad. And to add to my anger, we had a “new” window hire at Lowe’s (we discovered was fired months later) who insisted we could only get new Pella 350 in equal halves instead of the larger size on the upper window, replacing exacwhat we had. This changed the look of our beautiful custom shutters, which no longer were set at the proper position of the openings for the new windows. UGH!!!!!!!! Sorry for venting….

Well now, hurray for much needed rain! The daylilues look great with those raindrops. And the carpot daylilies look fabulous, those two tie as my favorite.

I think the front must be stalled in your area. Will be checking northern reports on Baja C. as it certainly is a head-turner.

I love daylily photos with water drops, so they're all appealing to me. Your photos of Stealth Bomber continue to impress. Baja, Patsy and Witch's Stick are all beautiful.

Thanks everyone! I think Baja California will really be spectacular after it's planted in the ground and settles in a bit. As long as I can keep the thrips away, Stealth Bomber is always a beauty.

Stunning Baja and the raindrops just ad interest to all the photos. Very nice.
I believe FastStone has a feature which takes a photo and converts it to an oil painting. Yours looks very nice.

Thanks Julia! DH uses a program called Dynamic Auto Painter to do the little watercolors.

I wouldnt know how to do no watercolors with the pc. I just wish that front would move alittle more south and stall out, if it brings rain with it.The weather report every day calls for 60% chance of thunderstorms,and 2 days it was 80% chance of rain, and all it did here was a litle mist one morning for a hour,and the next time, we got a little sprinkles that lasted about a hour, and nothing since.

All daylilies look pretty and happy to get the rain. I especially like Baja California and Witch's Stick, I like that form of UFs.
Your opening made me laugh. Do you buy because of the names or the flowers you liked just happened to have geographical names?
Watercolor is nice! I played with my pics too last year, but just tried a couple effects.

Nat - That effect put a very cool texture on your photo! I bought those daylilies because I liked the way they looked and they were BIG! I have several with place names (Mozambique nights, Cameroon Nights, etc.). I thought about starting a thread later in the summer where we could put together a collection of these.

It was of all things an asphalt effect.
