It's sad to see some of the early bloomers ending alreay. And I have a late that's ready to start blooming tomorrow. Low bud counts make for a quick season.

Scarlet Angel is a new red to the garden. It's hard to get a good photo of it. The color is dark red, and the gold edge looks green early in the morning.

Abilene Lillian and No Boys Allowed are my picks today, but all are beautiful. It seems to me that some of our late ones are blooming earlier this year. Lady Stephanie Victoria Redding already has scapes and one seedling that was about the last to bloom last year has scapes too.

The Red Edition pic is hard to beat! Has bud count on No Boys Allowed improved? Can't believe a 10-inch scape on Natalie Antoinette.

The original question was whether the percentage could be increased and still allow the pile to heat. It's a high nitrogen green, so if you add more the pile will get hotter. Don't overdo or it may get too hot, which can affect the microbial population and lower the quality of your product. Or it can go anaerobic like a pile of grass clippings and start to lose N as ammonia. You'll know if you've crossed that line. Seawater is about 3.5% by weight dissolved salts. 80% of that sea salt is sodium chloride. I would not put a lot of sea salt on my garden as a fertilizer, since I have clay. But a little that comes along with wet seaweed, no big deal. Certainly not worse than salty cow manure compost.

Dear Cathy, Thank you for all the good advertising and marketing information. It refreshed my memory about doing up press releases for my own business and sending them out to the local and surrounding newspapers. Also I remembered about advertising on local chamber of commerce internet pages - I did that some time ago when the chamber was redoing their web page and I have already gotten a call from that listing and I am not even open. Last year when my lavender was blooming I brought bunches of fresh lavender to all of the chamber of commerce offices in surrounding towns, so this year I may do that again along with a flyer about my farm, announcing when it will be opening. Giveways for thank yous along with your card to businesses is a good idea too. I have painted up some two sided signs that say fresh flowers with an arrow that can be set up on the highway to direct people into my location (these will be movable and taken down when I am not open). I have been getting my signs and such ready beforehand. I have had a sign posted on my fence saying "... farm coming soon" for some time and I have had good responses from that - in fact some people have said "your sign says coming soon - when it is coming?" (maybe I put the sign up a little too early). I do give out my business card to anyone I talk to. Even in grocery lines, gift shops, and department stores. In fact, my husband was talking to a gentleman in the auto repair shop that said he wanted to come when we opened. So you never know which people are interested in coming out to the country to buy direct from the farmer. I have always thought perhaps people in cities might have a longing for that country atmosphere and going to a farm is an excuse for them to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I just remembered someone else I know partnered with a local hotel and has advertising in their hotel rooms about their ranch - to entice visitors to come and stay there. I don't know if your area might be a tourist area but that might be a way to get more traffic to your location. In fact I did have a meeting with the small business administration office and they said the best way to get people to your location is to have a website and to make up one of those 8.5 by 3 inch brochures and place the brochure in locations where tourists pick up information about what do in that area. Having some of those at chamber offices is a good idea too. Cheryl mentioned above - about perhaps not having enough flowers her first season if she had advertised - and I am kind of worried about that too. I am planning to have other botanical/garden related items to sell in case I don't have enough fresh flowers - and I am hoping the drieds can get me through times without fresh flowers. I think Trish mentioned in a previous thread about us being marketers - and that is so true - your posting has reminded me to look at my business plan again and to make a list of all the things I should do to entice people to my farm. It is easy for me to get involved with the planting, growing and arranging and to forget about the advertising and marketing portion of the business. We went in May, I think it was memorial day week. We had freak weather. We expected to be chilly and have some spring rain everyday but the sun was shining all week. The Alaskan natives were actually laying on docks sunning themselves talking about how unusally nice it was. We flew into Anchorage and cruised down to Vancouver. We spent the night before the trip at a hotel and that is where we met the folks that had spent the week prior doing one of the land excursions on the train into the exterior. The hotel had put all their cruise suitcases into storage for them. Wanting to see more of the state and hearing the stories from those folks made me want to go back and do a two week land/cruise trip. I would choose to do the land based trip first and then follow up with the cruise with formal nights and massages. Why go from being fed and pampered to hiking and roughing it? I haven't tried all the cruise lines yet. I haven't tried Princess or Cunard, they are on my list. I favor Holland America and Royal Carribean. Last year I did my first 10 day cruise. Wow, that was great. Usually by the time you learn the whole ship it is time to get off. The 10 day allowed us to really unwind, we had two full weekends on the ship. They had floor mats with the day of the week on them in the elevator so you could keep track. The added benefit was not many kids at all. The longer cruises attract an older crowd from what I have been told. The short cheap ones are usually loaded with tons of kids these days. I have had some annoying moments with unruly kids. They tend to take over hot tubs even though there is a sign that says "No kids". One of the Royal Carribean ships was the first one I was on where there was a separate pool and lounge area for adults only. Sweet! You could actually read a book in peace. As far as the size of the ship goes. I hate the mega ships. Long lines for everything, not enough beach chairs by the pool. On some of the first mega ship designs there wasn't enough seating in the lounge for the shows. I had to sit through bingo just so I would have a seat for the show. I try to pick ships with around 1500 passengers but that gets harder and harder as they build them bigger. Now my rule is less than 2000 and an adult only area. I also look at the age of the ship and count the bars and pools to get a feel for the size. 2 bars = a bad old ship. The ships that do Alaska will probably not be the super mega ships because they have to get through the Panama Canal to get to their route. I was on a brand new Holland America ship for my Alaska cruise and we splurged on first class. I found the art and the fresh flowers really appealing. Some of the Carnival ships make me twitch. Can you imagine designing a pool on a cruise ship and using black tile on the edges where you sit? Thats Carnival. My musts for my next Alaska cruise would be a balcony. A newer ship with a glass retractable roof over the pool area. I also always choose my cabin to be midship close to an elevator, unless we are doing a last minute deal through Wills job. Then we get what we get. Our Alaska stops were Sitka, my favorite. The ship anchored and you were shuttled to your activity. We did sea kayaking with bald eagles soaring overhead. We also saw a bear in the distance as we were being ferried back to the ship on the super fast rubber raft. Our group was the only group to see a bear. Wish I had a super zoom then! We also stopped at Ketichan, I probably mangled the spelling. We took a bus to a camp in the rain forest and paddled a huge indian war canoe to a little camp in the woods where we were served lunch. I saw the biggest trees and plants that I have ever seen in my life at that site. In Junaeu we took a helicopter tour with two landings. Making a snow angel on a glacier is a once in a life time thing. I wish those pictures were digital so I could share. I think I wrote a book. LOL Can you tell I love cruises? One other thing I just thought of. A coworker took a cruise to Alaska last year and it was one of the new "free style" cruises where you did not have an assigned dinner table or time and she hated that feature. I can't remember why. I will ask her tomorrow.

This thread is a wonderful illustration of why we shouldn't use common names for plants. So far I have figured out 3 different plants that are being called Moonflowers. I think some of you are looking for Datura seed. If so, eBay is an excellent source. There are seeds offered for many different species and cultivars of Datura. You may have to spend a few dollars for your first seeds. After that, you can harvest enough seed to supply all of your friends and relatives as well as keeping your own plants going. Datura is very easy to grow from seed. In warmer areas of the country, it will survive for a few years as a perennial. It will self sow in the garden or you can start the seed in pots and transplant your seedlings wherever you want them. I start some of my seed indoors in February or March because the plant starts blooming too late to suit me if it's left to it's own devices.

Hmmm....lets see, hard to pick a favorite today. I like Snake in the Grass Boo, Beyond the Sea and Abilene Lillian. Just wondering how hybridizers come up with some of these crazy names. I like that crazy edge on Baja California. Sad that Abilene Lillian is done for the season.

Mantis - I got No Boys Allowed planted in the ground last year, but it still has only 8 buds per scape. Of course, bud counts are down on most plants this season. But I have been hand watering No Boys since the end of May. And it has only scaped on two of its six fans.

For a person who originally didn't care for reds you've come a long way baby. Red Edition and Scarlet Angel are gorgeous. If you ever come across one with the sunfast coloration of Acquire the Fire (what a great color) with the ruffles of either of those two let me know.....Snake in the Grass Boo seems popular. How self supporting are those stems? How do you like it overall ?.............Maryl

Maryl - I have come around to the reds. I so love the look of Red Edition but I so far I haven't got the plant performance I'd like. It holds its color up to 95 degrees, but with today's humid 98 with a heat index of 105 it didn't. Scarlet Angel just started to bloom this week. I think it will be more of a hybridizing plant than a long term garden resident. The ones in the red bed that looked the best at the end of this scorching day were Insider Trader, The Ultimate Sacrifice and Hoochie Coochie Man. Snake in the Grass Boo is a good one that usually looks good at the close of a 99-degree day. The scapes are very sturdy. In the years when it gets watered, it reblooms well.

No Boys Allowed & Snake in the Grass Boo are my picks for the day, but your Red Edition really looks good. I like that red with edge. I have Best In Class, wish it had more of an edge to it. Scarlett Angel is gorgeous too.

It is an odd year, some plants have really great bud counts, others that normally are pretty good I only have 3 or 4. Born to run last year had nice blooms, but not many buds. So far only a couple of the many, many buds have opened, but they are REALLY splotchy! How are you liking Billy the Kid? Can't say I'm impressed with the bud count on mine, but it is reblooming & the blooms have all looked good.

You may get re-bloom on Abilene Lillian. No Boys Allowed is quite pretty. I always love all the reds, and I think Red Edition is my favorite. I have had a crazy year with short scapes on a lot, Some without as many blooms as usual, and others blooming much more than normal. Re-bloom has been tremendous. several of the plants put on a total new blooming with as many scapes as a normal year just in the re-bloom...Pink Gingham, Water Drops, Spoken in Parables, Deliverer, Heaven's Echo....and many of them have re-bloom scapes...but not Clown Parade this year. Ah well. we never know what kind of year we will have, do we?

Another nice group of pics. I was curious about No Boys Allowed as I had it on my short list. Maybe it needs to come and live at my place LOL. It is only registered with bud count of 16 so your getting about half. Take heart, your probably not the only gardener who will see short scapes and less than stellar budcount this season.

Nancy - My Born to Run didn't even scape this year. So I didn't get the chance to bemoan its splotchy blooms. Billy the Kid is not wowing me. It has short scapes, only a few buds, and the blooms are not even showing the applique pattern. I'm hoping subsequent blooms will look better. The blooms were a lot prettier last year.

Kay - I'm not sure Abilene Lillian likes this climate. Only one of six fans scaped. I thought maybe a coreopsis was blocking its sun, so I dug it up and moved it about a week ago when we were having cooler temps. Still no scapes on those other fans. I'm glad to hear you're getting lots of rebloom. I have rebloom scapes coming on five daylilies now. I hope there will be some others.

Julia - No Boys Allowed is a pretty one. It's just never bloomed very much for me.
