they're really starting now

The past few day we've had a fair bit of rain. The daylilies seemed to love it but I can't walk in the garden without sinking to my ankles! Here are some pics I did manage to take. Enjoy! Marg

Dominic is the darkest its ever been for me. I had it in the garden in clay soil but last fall I moved it to a new raised bed with amended soil. Would that make that much of a difference in the color?

Hi Marg,

DOMINIC really looks terrific. Your photo of Blue Eyed Butterfly is one of the best I've seen. It's good that yours are beginning,as now here in zone 8, things have just about wound down.

Your orange seedling even has incipient tendrils! Your Hold Your Horses has good bud count.

Several of the most mature looking ones in my garden are on the "beware- slow grower!" list but I haven't found them so...I have others than I think are much slower and are of similar ages but much less mature looking. Ones I'm getting annoyed with their slowness are Brother Stephan(sp?) and Blue Ivory, Barbara Ann, and Big Daddy. None of those grow for me. These have all improved noticeably year after year. These were all moved at least once early in their years in my garden. Tokudama Flavocircinalis now Manhattan, which is described as having glacial growth rate on the hosta library page, I think, has been a good grower. Then: now: Thunderbolt then: now: I guess Remember Me has been slow, considering it is a small hosta. But it's still worth it. This may be the only hosta that actually got planted and not moved. now:

Never heard of putting something Blue on the box to attract them but you never know. I do know Bluebirds don't readily come to a mealworm feeder, they need to be trained to do so. They really need to be nesting in your yard first before you offer mealworms. Bluebirds are drop feeders (they perch and watch the ground for bug movement and drop down on it) so you need to see where they normally perch and then put the mealworm dish below this spot. Once they find the worms then you can move them to wherever you want, slowly if it is far away, or into a mealworm feeder. Good luck, hope they come back for you! I have a Blue pair that are taking their sweet time in nestbuilding. Have lots of houses but I have no clue which one they want and the choices are dwindling down due to TRES taking the others. They have been here for over two weeks now so I am pretty sure they will nest but you just never know. Donna

I remember when I went from Win. 3.1 to Win 95. thought I was learning a foreign language. Then to 98. UGH! Why can't they just leave well enough alone? and then .....XP, I think. I couldn't find a darn thing when I got that one. Each time my computer cousin would pat me on the shoulder and tell me once I got used to it, I'd like it. Well, every time I groaned about the switch, I did learn to navigate and run stuff. I don't suppose Win 7 will be any different and a year from now I'll wonder what all the whining was about but TODAY I would gladly give it up. I do have my old computer right here beside me and if I have to, I know how to turn it on! I'm old and in no mood to learn new tricks. I keep thinking I'll try Chrome but I really don't want to learn anything more related to computers. I'm full. No more room left to store stuff I'd need to know. It seemed like only certain messages triggered that pop up. Not every one. I haven't seen it for a couple days. They must have gotten it fixed. I work on a Mac all day. Love my PC.

OH MY....What IS the future goin g to look like. You forgot all the orchards falling due to the better rewards from grapes. Wine anyone while your kids drink their apples and eat their pop tart that have been 'fortified' with the leftover grape harvest.

Your orange seedling has some great edges starting there. so glad blooms are starting, since are are dwindling. I especially like Hold Your Horses and Blue Eyed Butterfly, but I think my favorite is Dominic. that is a beautiful rich color.

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. Taking all these pictures is a sure way to learn how to use my new camera! I did compare the Dominic photo to the one from last year and it was definitely more brownish last year. This year it is a more velvety deep plum color.
Debra, the orange seedling is from Lava Flow X Ashton Giggles. I bought the seeds on the Auction to try and introduce more things to my hybridizing program. So far it seems to be working! Marg
