Taking a cue from a recent discussion - What hosta would you advise someone to plant now because it is a slow grower and yet so worth it?

I've got snap peas! It will be awhile for the snow and shell peas. There won't be many of those. I've got the longest pea trellis ever, over a 4' bed. It's 40', but there is only one. Building 3+ trellises each year may be only history. I like peas! Pulled another Viking Purple potato plant yesterday and had creamed snap peas and new potatoes for dinner! (I've just finished the left-overs for lunch. :o) I better leave the potatoes alone for 3 weeks, at least. Those 2 plants didn't have quite 3# of spuds between 'em. If I'm gonna get 1#/square foot - they are gonna have to do better than that. Bok choy seed can go in that potato bed this month, as soon as the spuds are harvested. Oooorr I can plant more snow pea seed in that bed, Cat'. Yep, that last, very hot week of July, should give me pea pods and vine tendrils about the first of October. I wouldn't bother, unless you want to do it for your own edification. There are *many* bell varieties. Yours doesn't seem to offer anything new. The parentage of the red cross isn't clear from your post. Was it supposed to be a jalapeno? (That would be one parent - the other presumably unknown, but if you know what else was growing nearby you could guess.) You can't say that the plant is "early" when you start in May and it produces by September. (I presume it was earlier, but you don't say how early.) Jalapeno is species C.annuum. Annuums are not nearly as slow growing or producing as the C.chinense varieties you commonly read about here. Second, 28 pods from a first flush is decent but not remarkable. Third and worst, it is unlikely that the cross is stable. F2 and subsequent generations can be all over the place. (Believe me, I know.) In order to stabilize it you will need to grow through at least F6, preferably F8, selecting from a large population the plants with the characteristics you want to preserve for the next generation. It can be done, but you would need to have some unique attributes in order to justify it. And if you develop it, then what? Who would want it? In the case of a new "world's hottest", lots of people. But what makes yours compelling? Overwinter the plant, and enjoy. If you want more, try starting cuttings. They won't have the stability problems. Good growing, Dennis

Congrats on your sprouters! I planted mine in peat pellet pots and put them in a covered flat under lights to grow up a little. Very lightly fertilized them after they had some true leaves. Then potted them into small pots and moved them out of the flat. You can sort of sterilize peat pots before planting into them by pouring boiling water over them. I did that with mine, and have spritzed the seedlings with water/peroxide. Happily, no damping off problems this season. Wish I could advise on the amount of peroxide to use, but I just use a little splish of it in the spray bottle. Then add a drop of fertilizer when they are ready for it. Never heard of putting something Blue on the box to attract them but you never know. I do know Bluebirds don't readily come to a mealworm feeder, they need to be trained to do so. They really need to be nesting in your yard first before you offer mealworms. Bluebirds are drop feeders (they perch and watch the ground for bug movement and drop down on it) so you need to see where they normally perch and then put the mealworm dish below this spot. Once they find the worms then you can move them to wherever you want, slowly if it is far away, or into a mealworm feeder. Good luck, hope they come back for you! I have a Blue pair that are taking their sweet time in nestbuilding. Have lots of houses but I have no clue which one they want and the choices are dwindling down due to TRES taking the others. They have been here for over two weeks now so I am pretty sure they will nest but you just never know. Donna

Two of my favourite specimens - fantastic, rich colours and eye-catching corrugation.
Yet in the pots and in the first year or two in the garden, they show no indication of the colours or corrugation they will develop.

I'm going to say Manhattan and Niagara Falls. Actually any of Olga's large hosta will only give big rewards if chosen. I am currently enamored by Old Faithful, one of Olga's fragrant efforts. It is a treasure. The bees are loving it, and the latest picture of OF shows a bee buried in the bell shaped 4" white flower with nothing but his back legs and his fuzzy butt showing. I love it when the bees are around the garden. And the toads too, but they don't pollenate anything to my knowledge.

Several of the most mature looking ones in my garden are on the "beware- slow grower!" list but I haven't found them so...I have others than I think are much slower and are of similar ages but much less mature looking. Ones I'm getting annoyed with their slowness are Brother Stephan(sp?) and Blue Ivory, Barbara Ann, and Big Daddy. None of those grow for me.

These have all improved noticeably year after year. These were all moved at least once early in their years in my garden.

I guess Remember Me has been slow, considering it is a small hosta. But it's still worth it. This may be the only hosta that actually got planted and not moved.

Paula, those look gorgeous! Do you have a fair bit of sun on your hostas? They seem so full and lush. Mine dont get much sun and I find that I get big leaves, but much less of them. And my Liberty will never have those gorgeous cream edges that Paul's does...they stay more yellow....Remember Me doesn't get fully cream in the center either. I bet your Liberty is huge next year, Paula.

I planted Liberty where it gets only morning sun, so it remains to be seen.

Toku Flav, morning dappled and not much past 1pm

GE, late afternoon dappled, sun from 6ish to dark.

Jade Cascade straight sun from about 3ish to dark.

I haven't planted Remember Me but I was thinking only dappled morning light to protect it from burning.
