I wondered why they were talking all of a sudden. I thought I had mistakenly clicked the ad.

It's a good thing I wasn't sitting here in the dark, alone, late at night.

Gosh, that's too funny. Reminds me why I always have my computer sound on mute. I hate that annoying Windows beep when I hit the wrong key, so I keep it muted. I always forget until I click on a video that I *do* want to watch and wonder "gee, why isn't there any sound?"

I just got Win 7 a couple of weeks ago. I cry easily these days. I'd like to turn my speakers off but then I'd have to figure out how to turn them back on again. AFTER I figured out that was the problem.

A little off topic, but your question "why does everything have to make noise?" is so my thoughts these days.
I was at a mall one day and the music was not only in the mall, but piped to the outside too. I guess so we can hear music as we walk from our car into the mall itself.
Then, one store I was in had two sources of music that were audible at the same time. One playing music overhead for the whole store, then another different music playing loudly in a section of the store.
There are so many examples, but the other day on tv, I saw this reality show, where a pregnant mom had this headphone contraption wrapped around her abdomen for baby to hear. I mean, what if the baby doesn't want to hear it? What if it is too loud or something?
Where is the peace and quiet? Do we always have to have music on?

I'll agree to all of the above aggravation and add some: Websites that have background music.

If I'm sitting in front of a computer screen I inevitably have music or a video already playing. Then, suddenly, rock music is blaring at me and I can't find it to turn it off!!! I won't frequent a web site that has background music because of it. It's extremely invasive.

I hate all noise I don't turn on myself.

That said, I don't hear anything happening on gardenweb so I'm wondering if it's connected to the green underlines? I went to the trouble to block that website (the website that controls the green underlining) from my computer. So I don't see them. Anyone here who blocked the green lines but still here the noises??

I have the green lines turned off. I still got the snooping advertising beacon.
I don't go to a web site that has sound a second time. And there's no way to check something out at work Just In Case noise blares.
All the noise is the same as keeping preschoolers on task. Why can't preschoolers just be kids? Give them an empty box and leave them alone. I'm glad I'm old!

Firefox with Ad-Block Plus. It's free. And makes for a very peaceful vecinity.

So I wonder why some of us are getting it and not others? I run Win 7 with IE. And I have to say, if this site starts talking to me it will probably be then end of my contribution here.

Now it's happened to me...I wonder why some of you encountered it yesterday, but I didn't have the problem until tonight. I had trouble with Firefox, so switched to Google Chrome a few weeks ago, which blocks popups as well as Firefox AdBlock+ did. Unfortunately, in some quest to clear my computer of possible virus threats several months ago, I lost the ability to control the laptop's speakers, so I can't mute it! Grrr.

Pinch_me, is Windows 7 horrible? I thought maybe it'd be better. I have Windows XP on this laptop, and had Vista on a previous computer that died. I'm really envying my college kids their Macs, which keep on going without problems. But after buying theirs, it's not in my budget to get one for me! And the Macs don't like my drafting software.

Well, you can run windows on your mac, you know. A lot of us have fusion or parallels for that one windows program we have to run.

I remember when I went from Win. 3.1 to Win 95. thought I was learning a foreign language. Then to 98. UGH! Why can't they just leave well enough alone? and then .....XP, I think. I couldn't find a darn thing when I got that one. Each time my computer cousin would pat me on the shoulder and tell me once I got used to it, I'd like it. Well, every time I groaned about the switch, I did learn to navigate and run stuff. I don't suppose Win 7 will be any different and a year from now I'll wonder what all the whining was about but TODAY I would gladly give it up. I do have my old computer right here beside me and if I have to, I know how to turn it on! I'm old and in no mood to learn new tricks.

I keep thinking I'll try Chrome but I really don't want to learn anything more related to computers. I'm full. No more room left to store stuff I'd need to know.

It seemed like only certain messages triggered that pop up. Not every one. I haven't seen it for a couple days. They must have gotten it fixed.

I work on a Mac all day. Love my PC.

Yep, I could pay the dbl price for a Mac, then pay for the software that allows it to run Windows, then pay for the special Windows software, too...But I just don't have that kind of $$. That's why my son has the Mac I'd intended for myself a few years ago. Nothing's perfect, and nothing's inexpensive. So far, no yelling ads today...
