Never knew how many plants I have...

...until I tried to get rid of them! Seriously, I have way too many! I've loaded up several cars now, and still have a yard full. Luckily, I broke down and got a bigger truck, so I will be able to take more of the cold-hardy ones with me to go in my friend's yard, but where did all these things come from? I swear, I do not remember planting all of these.

I wish someone wanted my Aechmea blanchetiana's. I hate to leave them. They are huge, though, so hardly anyone wants them. Sad, because they do so well in sun. I know they are prickly, but they are so gorgeous! No one seems to want the bromeliads. No one has shade anymore since the hurricanes all went through here a few years ago. These broms won't do well in Gainesville, and they really are too big to grow indoors.

Ah, the pain of leaving your babies behind.

I really wish I had more shade. I underestimated how much sun gets under my little oaks--some of the broms you shared with me got sunburn :( I moved them around a bit and hope they will get less sun. Will check on them tomorrow. Maybe I should come back for an Aechmea blanchetiana after all!

I just posted about those broms because I saw them @ the Naples Botanical gardens online. Where do you live??? I would LOVE some broms! I'm just starting my brom garden after purchasing about 50 @ a garage sale. I'm in Orlando this weekend, and we live in SW FLorida.

Where do you live? (What area, so I can figure out if it's even an option to come and get some).

Sounds like protien/tds build up. Probably some crud you disturbed and released from the substrate if you don't do the vacuuming regularly. Test the water to make sure you didn't harm the "biofilter" bacterias. If not just sludge you may have turned up cleaning. could also be some sort of decor or rock that hadn't been touched for a while, then with the disturbance it is starting to disintergrate. Plant them together. You can separate if you wish when they get between 12 and 18 inches tall or let them grow together for a "stand". If you separate wait until the mother gets a good start and then take a little bit of her root with each pup. They will wilt when you first take them so leave them in the shade and water well.

Oh, I love, love, love salads!!!! I should have been a rabbit! My favorite lettuces are the cut & come again ones as well, loose-leaf. I always grab handfuls of every kind I can find, mix them all together, and then just scatter them willy-nilly, thickly. It's a wonderful rainbow of greens and reds. For salads, I top with various cheeses -- my favorite is Swiss but feta is a very close second. Of course, all manner of veggies -- tomatoes, cukes (or even pickles), avocado, carrots, spinach, cabbage, peppers, onions, broccoli, etc, etc. Now and then, I get in the mood for meats so will add sliced turkey or chicken, maybe some grilled pork or fish. The sky's the limit. Dressings, I usually make my own but, lately, have added some storebought as well. I'll add just a tiny bit of Paul Newman's Olive Oil & Vinegar for the herbs in it, then also add balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, and pepper. Yummy!! When I make my own, I use a little bit of olive oil, some combo of the above listed vinegars and lemon juice, lots of oregano, garlic & onion powders, and salt & pepper. Good, good stuff. Can ya tell I get excited over salads? LOL As long as it's not that stupid, worthless iceberg lettuce. Blech. Diane

Never have I had this many blooms in December!

Beautiful sight and so cheerful! Here along the shoreline it's been a warm December without many bitter cold days to slow things down. I've seen some strange sights, too, in my garden. Last week I found a small white annual alyssum blooming between two evergreens. It's been two years since I planted alyssum in that spot so this must be some hardy seed that suddenly germinated. Will they do well in the Orlando area, or are they too cold sensative? I love the bright color and would love to adopt one.
