Brush it in and around really well and let it sit a few minutes. Then get all that salt back up. Then pour not very diluted vinegar straight on the stain and let it sit there all wet for a little while. Blot that up, and blot, and blot... And then pour *very* hot water on the stain spot to wet the rug/dilute the vinegar out as you alternate pouring the hot water with walking on dry towels on the spot to alternately wet and dry the spot. Lots and lots of drying... No, I'm not making a joke here. I must have done this cleaning job a zillion times, especially as our dog aged into dementia and almost a total loss of control. (Even with all that, though, I still miss her...) The stain that's really a toughie is when the dog eats moldy leaves outside and then upchucks it on the rug. Those black stains are the things I never quite mastered. And I didn't always notice the black upchuck right away. (Don't ask _me_ why the dog ate that stuff! Dogs can be crrrrazy!) I've discovered Goop as a miracle worker for laundry stains since then, though, and that might have worked on the rug too, with enough effort at rubbing it in. A plain old-fashioned wood floor might still be a pretty good idea with pets around. We still have some of that, and it still looks decent. Best wishes, Mary

Researchers have for years tried to harness nuclear fusion to power the world. But its cousin, nuclear fission -- the breaking apart of atoms -- is the only method so far commercially viable. The latest invention is not in the same league as efforts to build complex commercial reactors. The new device creates a relatively small number of reactions, and requires more energy to operate than it produces. The Real Deal (AP) - Previous claims of tabletop fusion have been met with skepticism and even derision by physicists. In one of the most notable cases, Dr. B. Stanley Pons of the University of Utah and Martin Fleischmann of Southampton University in England shocked the world in 1989 when they announced that they had achieved so-called cold fusion at room temperature. Their work was discredited after repeated attempts to reproduce it failed. Fusion experts noted that the new UCLA experiment is credible because, unlike the 1989 work, it did not violate basic principles of physics. "This doesn't have any controversy in it because they're using a tried and true method,'' said David Ruzic, professor of nuclear and plasma engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "There's no mystery in terms of the physics.'' -- Associated Press But the configuration is so small and simple that its creators think it may inspire unforeseen applications. "I certainly find it interesting that you can heat a cubic centimeter crystal in your hand, then plunge it in cold water and it will cause nuclear fusion," Seth Putterman from the University of California Los Angeles told LiveScience. Putterman's lay description greatly oversimplifies how the compact apparatus works. Specifically, Putterman and collaborators heat a pyroelectric crystal, lithium tantalite, from minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit to plus 45 in a matter of minutes. This generates an electrical charge -- 100,000 volts -- across the tiny crystal, which is housed in a chamber filled with deuterium gas, a heavy form of hydrogen. The high voltage is focused onto a needle-thin tip, which strips electrons from nearby deuterium nuclei and then accelerates them at a solid target containing deuterium. When two deuterium nuclei collide together at high speed, they fuse to form helium. The Sun also fuses atoms in thermonuclear reactions that create light and heat. The byproduct of the newly discovered lab reaction is a particle called the neutron. The scientists detect about 1,000 neutrons per second. Because neutrons are so penetrating, Putterman said that a hand-held neutron source might one-day be used to do geologic surveys or to look into cargo containers for nuclear devices. "Current neutron generators are extremely cumbersome," Putterman said. "They are about as big as a dentists X-ray machine, so you canÂt carry them into the field." Pyroelectric crystals could also provide a beam of ions for use as a microthruster in a miniature spacecraft. The research is described in the April 28 issue of the journal Nature.

Last year I replaced an older A/C unit with a Heat Pump. I also replaced my oil furnace with a new oil furnace. I also replaced my electric hot water heater with a GE Heat Pump hot water heater. For the first ten months of 2009 I paid $2700 for electricity. In the first ten months of this year, since the new equipments, I have paid $2000. Additionally, I kept my home three degrees cooler this year during the cooling season and three degrees warmer during the heating season just beginning. Also, for the first time in my 22 years in this house the entire house was properly cooled and comfortable during the cooling season. Because of my ignorance, I did not use the heat pump "properly" during the past heating season - I used oil to heat almost exclusively - just as I had in 2009. At the end of the year I will post 12 months worth of data. However, replacing the old electric resistance heat hot water heater with the heat pump with resistance backup is saving nearly $50 in electric usage every month of the year. Since there is less energy in any given volume of fuel, cylinder pressure will drop with ng. By increasing the compression ratio you can get the cylinder pressures back up to what they were with gasoline. That way you can recover some, maybe all, of the losses associated with the change in fuel. Taking advantage fo the greater inherent knock resistance of the ng compard to gasoline would require increasing the compression ratio and pressure even higher. The engine may not tolerate it at a number of levels. Gains in electrial power output will only be realized if the generator is oversized with respect to the prime mover. This kind of activity would definately be characterized as a hobby rather than a practical activity. Most people will just buy a larger genset.
